Boucheron Jewelry

French

As the oldest high-end jewelry boutique on the legendary Place Vendôme in Paris, dating to 1893, Boucheron stands for history, sensuality and avant-garde style. The French fine jewelry house has created iconic rings, necklaces and other adornments over its more than 160-year history for royalty like the Russian imperial family, the Maharaja of Patiala and Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. It has also received popular acclaim for its modern designs and playful motifs such as serpents and cats.

Since its founding in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron with a boutique at the Palais Royal arcades, the maison has sought to create unforgettably unique pieces, push the boundaries of innovations in jewelry design and celebrate the opulence of gold. Many of its pieces are sculpted in gold by expert goldsmiths so that the material becomes a design element in its own right.

At its best, Edwardian jewelry was all about the exquisite diamond, platinum and pearl creations made by such famous names as Cartier and Boucheron. Later, Frédéric’s son Louis became especially interested in the Art Deco style as well as accessories like cigarette holders, bags and belts.

Boucheron is most famously known for its sources of inspiration: nature, animals and the earth. Its iconic Serpent Bohème collection, introduced in 1968, references the curves and scales of the animal with pear-shaped motifs and coiled accents adorned with diamonds and other precious stones like turquoiselapis lazuli and malachite. (A 1960s-era Boucheron brooch featuring a lavish mound of artfully assembled round and baguette diamonds set in platinum is a dinner-party conversation starter from any angle.)

Frédéric Boucheron gave a serpent necklace to his wife as a symbol of love and protection. Leopards, hummingbirds, deer and hedgehogs are referenced in the Animaux de Collection, while high-end 3D technology in the Nature Triomphante meticulously re-creates flower petals, ivy branches and other organic forms.

Boucheron also pays homage to Paris, the city where it was founded. The octagonal shape of the Place Vendôme is translated into the geometric Liseré pieces, and the Clou de Paris motif — which is integral to the house's Quatre series — is inspired by the cobblestones on its streets. Since 1859, when Boucheron introduced a collection of pocket watches, the maison has also regularly created timepieces with the same elegance and refinement as its jewelry.

Despite having such a long legacy, Boucheron has always been ahead of its time. Its creative collections and bold jewelry remain coveted and cherished. In 2018, its flagship in the Place Vendôme reopened after a restoration under its current owner Kering.

Questions About Boucheron Jewelry
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024
Yes, secondhand jewelry may be worth something. With fine jewelry, precious metals and gems may have value on their own, and collectors may seek both fine and costume jewelry due to the maker, style, type and other factors. However, the condition of a piece will have a major impact on how much it is worth. To evaluate your jewelry, consult a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antiques dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of antique, vintage and contemporary jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 17, 2023
To tell if a vintage ring is real, examine its details. Older pieces are usually handmade, so they’ll often lack perfect symmetry or feature minor flaws in the details. Does it show signs of wear and tear that normally wouldn’t appear on a new accessory? Stamps and/or markings inside the band may indicate the content of the metal as well as the manufacturer. You can consult online resources to see if the stylistic characteristics match jewelry from the era during which you believe the ring originated. Certified appraisers or seasoned professionals within the jewelry industry can also help you determine the age of a piece. If you wish to know if a vintage ring’s gemstone is real, consult an experienced gemologist. Shop a range of jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024
No, there isn't an app that can tell you exactly how much your ring is worth. To get an accurate estimated fair market value for a piece of jewelry, it is typically necessary to use the services of a certified appraiser or experienced jeweler. However, you can get some information about your ring from apps. Jewelry ID can identify the precious metals and gemstones featured in some jewelry, while various diamond and gemstone calculators provide estimated values for the precious stones featured in rings. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024
To tell how old an antique ring is, you have two main options. First, you can conduct online research using trusted sources. If you know the maker of the ring or the ring has a maker's mark that you can use to identify who produced it, learning more about the designer, artisan or company and their styles can help with the dating process. When the maker is unknown, you can familiarize yourself with the characteristics of various antique jewelry styles, such as Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian, to try and identify the period in which your ring was likely produced. The second option is to have a certified appraiser, experienced antique dealer or knowledgeable jeweler date your ring for you. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of antique rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Boucheron does indeed use real gold. There are at least four types of gold used in Boucheron’s designs, including gold, white gold, yellow gold and rose gold, all in 18 karats. Shop a collection of Boucheron jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024
Yes, used jewelry may be worth something. Precious metals and gemstones often retain their value over time, and both fine and costume jewelry may have value beyond the potential selling price of its materials due to its age, style, type, condition and other factors. The maker can also greatly impact value, as collectors often seek pieces from well-known jewelry houses like Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Buccellati, Chopard, Boucheron and Graff. If you're curious as to how much pieces in your collection may be worth, a certified appraiser or experienced jeweler can be of assistance. Find a diverse assortment of antique, vintage and contemporary jewelry on 1stDibs.
