Childe Hassam Landscape Prints

American, 1859-1935

Childe Hassam was one of the most prolific American Impressionist painters of his day, creating more than 3,000 works of art. In addition to his love of urban scenes, Hassam is known for his portraits, landscapes and figurative paintings. He enjoyed a successful career, commercial popularity and critical acclaim, cementing an enduring legacy in American art.

Hassam was born in 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, as Frederick Childe Hassam. As a teenager, he apprenticed in an engraver’s workshop but later started working as an illustrator. Hassam took a life drawing class at the Boston Art Club and an anatomy class at the Lowell Institute. In 1883, he embarked on a journey to Europe, where he began producing watercolor paintings.

Hassam returned to Boston in 1884 and married Kathleen Maude Doane. In 1886, the couple traveled to Paris together, where Hassam studied at the Academie Julian and exhibited his work at the Parisian salons. They returned to America in 1889 and took up residence in New York City.

Along with Boston and Paris, New York City featured heavily in Hassam's urban paintings. Among his most famous works is Avenue of the Allies, Great Britain, representing Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue.

Beginning in the 1890s, Hassam spent summers painting throughout Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. He earned numerous accolades and exhibited at museums across the country by the turn of the century. In 1915, he turned his attention to prints and etchings.

Before he died in 1935, Hassam gifted the paintings in his studio to the American Academy of Arts and Letters with instructions that they be sold and the funds used to purchase American works. Today, his art is held in numerous museums, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

In 2016, the “Impressionism: American Gardens on Canvas” exhibition at the New York Botanical Garden featured Hassam’s Celia Thaxter's Garden, Isles of Shoals, Maine among its showcase of American impressionist masters.

Windmill And Well At Dusk - Original Vintage Lithograph
By Peter Hurd
Located in Soquel, CA
Windmill And Well At Dusk - Original Vintage Lithograph Original vintage black and white lithograph of a windmill and well at dusk by Peter Hurd (American, 1904-1984). The viewer looks out into the New Mexico desert, as a windmill stands in back of a full water tank. The setting dusky sun lights the horizon as the crescent moon comes into view. Simple, beautiful New Mexico desert scene. Signed in print575 "Peter Hurd" lower right. Presented in a silver frame with an inner white mat. Frame: 15.25"H x 19.25"W Mat: 14.5"H x 18.5"W Image: 8.75"H x 10.25"W Peter Hurd (American, 1904-1984) was an American painter whose work is strongly associated with the people and landscapes of San Patricio, New Mexico, where he lived in the 1930s. He is equally acclaimed for his portraits and his western landscapes. Early in his life, Hurd studied in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania under the noted illustrator N. C. Wyeth, along with two of his grown children. Hurd later married the painter's eldest daughter, Henriette Wyeth, who also is known as an accomplished painter. During World War II, Hurd worked for Life magazine as a war correspondent attached to the US Air Force. He created hundreds of "War Sketches". Hurd came to national attention in the 1930's for both painting and book illustration. Among the books are Last of the Mohicans (1926), Great Stories of the Sea and Ships (1933), and Habit of Empire (1938). Nevertheless, he was most associated with the New Mexico subjects which occupied most of his career. He worked primarily in egg tempera on gesso, a medium he introduced to his younger brother-in-law, Andrew Wyeth. Hurd's realist palette and brush technique of fine, linear marks and hatches beautifully conveyed the scrubby high-desert landscape. He loved to explore the visual effect of constantly changing weather and sunlight on the land. Hurd also was known for his honest yet sympathetic portrayals of local ranch and farm families going about the work and pleasures of their daily lives. Sponsored by New Deal art programs, Heard painted murals for the Big Springs, Texas Post Office in 1938 and the Terminal Annex Building in Dallas in 1940. In that latter year he also completed three fresco murals at the Alamogordo, New Mexico Post Office. From 1942 to 1945 Hurd worked as a war correspondent for Life magazine and then resumed full-time painting. During 1953 and 1954 Peter, Henriette, and two students, Manuel Acosta...

"Home from the Fair" Wagon and Horses Print on Canvas
Located in Soquel, CA
"Home from the Fair" Wagon and Horses Print on Canvas Colorful print on canvas with additional oil brush strokes for detail by Texas artist Jack Terry (American, Born 1952). Limited hand signed edition of 108/250 hand embellished canvas prints. Hand signed in gold pen lower right "Jack Terry 108/250" Also signed in print "Jack Terry 1988" Ink Stamp on Canvas "Jack Terry hand Painted Canvas Print" Brass plaque center on linen "Home From the Fair" Image, 16"H x 20"W Frame, 24"H x 28"W x 2.5"D Jack Terry’s paintings evoke emotion in the viewer encompassing subject matter, use of color, mood and grace of light. He is one of the most collected artists of our time. Jack was born in the west Texas town of Sweetwater in 1952 and began his art career as a young child, winning his first of many awards at the age of nine. A fourth-generation Texan, he credits much of his inspiration to his maternal Grandfather, Bill Mason, a rancher who cowboyed on some of the last cattle drives of the west and his paternal Grandmother, Etna Terry, who began painting late in life and welcomed young Jack to participate in the fun. Six-time world champion Cowboy Larry Mahan has said of Jack, “Terry captures the West the way it was and the way it should be. He is one of the finest artists of our day and a pretty good cowhand to boot…”. A graduate of the University of Texas, Jack studied studio art, anatomy, design and journalism while displaying his paintings in various galleries throughout the state. Upon graduation, he began painting full-time, taking every opportunity to day-work on various ranches in search of inspiration, new subject matter and authenticity. In 1976, at the young age of 24, Jack Terry was named Bicentennial Artist in Texas. He was honored with a one-man show in the state Capitol Rotunda. His portrait of President Lyndon Johnson was commissioned for publication on the Texas Bicentennial Calendar that same year. In 1999, Harvest House Publishers invited Jack to write and illustrate his first book. “The Great Trail Ride”, a collection of 14 inspirational short stories. The great success of that first title led to eight more books which sold over one million copies. In 2008 First Lady Laura Bush invited Jack to the White House for the Holiday Celebration. He painted a Christmas tree ornament representing the state of Texas. In 2010 the United States Army commissioned a painting honoring the First Air Calvary Division and the brave men and women who have served from the historic beginning of the U.S. Calvary, Viet Nam and the Middle East. Limited edition reproductions were signed by Jack, Medal of Honor Recipient Bruce Crandall from the Viet Nam War, and General Dick Cody, Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army. Jack responded about this special occasion in 2010, “After months of research, flying time and researching films and most importantly sitting at the same table with these heroes whose commitment, loyalty and sacrifice to our great nation have made this the most meaningful painting I have ever done”. Jack Terry’s paintings hang in prominent collections throughout the country. The King Ranch...

The Universalist Independent Christian Church in Gloucester, Massachusetts was dedicated in 1806 and housed a congregation associated with the granting of religious freedom to all denominations. It was also celebrated for its bell, cast at Paul Revere's foundry. Martin Baldwin Wallace College, deaccessioned 2010 "Childe Hassam (1859–1935), a pioneer of American Impressionism and perhaps its most devoted, prolific, and successful practitioner, was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts (now a suburb of Boston), into a family descended from settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Equally adept at capturing the excitement of modern cities and the charms of country retreats, Hassam (properly pronounced HASS-am) became the foremost chronicler of New York City at the turn of the century. In our day, he is perhaps best known for his depictions of flag-draped Fifth Avenue during World War I (67.187.127). His finest works manifest his brilliant handling of color and light and reflect his credo (stated in 1892) that “the man who will go down to posterity is the man who paints his own time and the scenes of every-day life around him.” After establishing his reputation in Boston between 1882 and 1886, Hassam studied from 1886 to 1889 in Paris. There he was unusual among his American contemporaries in his attraction to French Impressionism, which was just beginning to find favor with American collectors. Hassam returned to the United States late in 1889 and took up lifelong residence in New York. His signature images include views of Boston, Paris, and New York, three urban centers whose places and pleasures he captured with affection and originality. Examples include Winter in Union Square (43.116.2) and Spring Morning in the Heart of the City (43.116.1), both of which record lively sections of New York during the first decade of Hassam’s activity there. While Hassam was unusual among the American Impressionists for his frequent depictions of burgeoning cities, he spent long periods in the countryside. There he found respite from urban pressures and inspiration for numerous important works of art. Hassam’s many portrayals of the old-fashioned gardens, rocky coast, and radiant sunlight of the Isles of Shoals...
