Concord Watch Jewelry

Swiss

Over a century ago, five visionaries founded Concord Watch. Two master watchmakers — Walter Hugenin and Charles Bonny — and three financial partners set out to create the refined luxury watches for which they are known today and initially had their sights set squarely on discerning American consumers.

Established in 1908 in Biel, Switzerland, Concord has long been recognized for its sophisticated timepieces including its collections of what are widely known as jewelry watches, which, depending on the striking model, might feature 18-karat gold cases, an integration of rubies or emeralds or eye-catching rows of prong-set, single-cut diamonds adorning the bezel. Concord provided these timepieces to fine jewelry houses such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels in the early 20th century.

The brand’s innovation quickly outpaced its competitors, as Concord became one of the first watchmakers to produce private label watches set with precious metals and gemstones, and during the 1940s, the manufacture of its sleek modernist timepieces included models made from coins. An ad during the 1950s touted the brand's Coin Bracelet watch as a “Symbol of Elegance.”

In 1970, the North American Watch Company — under the leadership of Gedalio Grinberg, a Cuban businessman who had relationships with Piaget, Omega and other manufacturers — purchased Concord as well as Movado.

With Grinberg at the helm, Concord debuted its revolutionary Delerium line in 1979 — which included the thinnest watch ever designed at less than 2 mm thick — just as the Swiss watchmaking industry found itself challenged by the quartz crisis. During the 1980s, the brand experimented with watches that were marked by a marriage of sportiness and dressiness, which yielded the Mariner as well as the Saratoga collection. In 2008, Concord was awarded the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève for its C1 Tourbillon Gravity.

Today Concord is a subsidiary of Movado.

Questions About Concord Watch Jewelry
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Yes, Concord watches are still made. The company started in 1908 in Biel, Switzerland, and still has its headquarters in the city today. Luxury watchmaker Modavo now owns the brand. You can shop for a variety of Concord watches on1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
Yes, they make watches out of gold. However, pure gold is vulnerable to scratching, so most gold watches feature alloys, such as 14-karat or 18-karat gold. In addition to solid gold watches, you can find gold-filled timepieces. Made by binding a layer of gold alloy to a base metal, gold-filled watches are highly durable and often more accessibly priced. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of gold watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
The history of Concord watches started in 1908, when a group of five watchmakers founded the company in Biel, Switzerland, with the goal of producing Swiss-made watches with American consumers in mind. Through skilled marketing and a lineup of finely crafted timepieces, the company quickly gained acclaim. In fact, President Harry S. Truman presented Concord watches to Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin during the peace talks that brought World War II to a close. The North American Watch Company (which would later rebrand as Movado) bought Concord in 1970. Under its new ownership, the company weathered the quartz crisis of the 1970s and ’80s by introducing luxury quartz watches. The maker made headlines in 1979 by introducing the thinnest watch in the world, the Delirium. The 1990s brought declining sales, but in 2007, a major relaunch caused a resurgence in the popularity of the watchmaker. In 2008, Concord won the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève for Best Design of the Year for its C1 Gravity Tourbillon watch. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Concord watches.

To tell if a Concord watch is real, look for its serial number. Cross-referencing this number with information shared on trusted online resources can help you determine if your timepiece matches the metal, style, size and other characteristics associated with that number. Any inconsistencies may indicate that your watch is a replica. If you're still uncertain about your timepiece's authenticity, consider using the services of a certified appraiser or knowledgeable jeweler. Explore a range of Concord watches on 1stDibs.

Many watch lovers believe that Concord is a good watch brand. In fact, in 2008, Concord was awarded the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève for its C1 Tourbillon Gravity. The win came after 100 years of excellence and innovation in the field of watchmaking, and the maker remains a favorite among watch collectors to this day. Concord has long been recognized for its sophisticated timepieces, including its collections of what are widely known as jewelry watches, which, depending on the model, might feature 18-karat gold cases, an integration of rubies or emeralds or eye-catching rows of prong-set, single-cut diamonds adorning the bezels. Whether Concord watches are waterproof varies based on the model. Concord diver's watches are generally safe to swim and dive with, while other watches made by the luxury brand are generally water-resistant. However, Concord cautions against swimming or bathing while wearing any of its watches that aren't classified as diver's models. Shop a diverse assortment of Concord watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 17, 2023

Who makes the Concord watch has changed over the years. Concord was originally an independent company. A group of watchmakers established it in Biel, Switzerland, in 1908. The North American Watch Company bought the brand in 1970. The company later changed its name to the Movado Group and, under this moniker, relaunched the Concord brand in 2007.
