Copeland and Garrett Late Spode, Coffee Can, Japan Brocade Pattern, circa 1835
By Copeland & Garrett Spode
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very good example of an English, coffee can, made by Copeland and Garret, circa 1833-1844. W.T. Copeland purchased the Spode factory and made Thomas Garrett a partner in April 1833. The can is nominally straight sided and has the Spode loop handle with a pronounced kick or kink to the lower part, with a lower attachment that curves out from the cup. Spode is the only factory with a handle of this exact shape. The body is translucent and is Spode's version of New Stone China, a type of Ironstone. The can is decorated in the 'Japan Brocade' pattern, which has floral sprigs in compartments all in underglaze blue. Alternate compartments of the design are then hand-painted over-glaze. There are three orange aster flower heads to the inner rim and a gilded border pattern to the base rim with additional gilding to the inner flower heads and outer handle. This can has a printed Copeland & Garrett / Late Spode...
