David Hiscock Art

British, b. 1921
British fine artist David Hiscock - At the forefront of contemporary photography in the late 1980’s and 1990’s Hiscock led the way in finding new styles with his astonishing inventive spiralling around a photographic core. Time-lapse works, abstractions, multiple portraits, distortions…he has been responsible for a string of outstanding exhibition pieces of many kinds. As a creator and fabricator, his dexterity and visual virtuosity have always been appreciated. In the fine detail of the hand-worked pieces of thirty years ago, or in the controlled precision of his later work in jewellery and most recently sculpture and design, there has always been a basis of top-level craft skill in what he has done. What makes him different is the marriage of that to intellectual and emotional ranges of the very highest order. His work is held amongst others, in the collections of The National Portrait Gallery, Deutsche Bank, The Royal Photographic Society.

''Musis Sacrum'' Hand-colored etching with Gold Leaf, An Ode to Music
Located in Utrecht, NL
Different worlds are melted together in the remarkable etches of Dutch artist Gea Karhof. Ancient cultures go hand in hand with 20th century icons. It is possible to see Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse or Superman swimming among oriental figures. On the many journeys to Greece, Nepal, Japan and Egypt amongst other countries, Gea gets inspired for her work by the oriental impressions. The hand-colored etchings are like dreams, in which differences in time and place disappear, while that seems perfectly logical. Gea Karhof combines her own childhood memories and travel experiences with general history, so that Gea’s etchings at first sight appear to be historical documents. Each time, all elements come together under a larger theme that forms the basis for her work. ‘’Subjects present themselves; I am never consciously looking for the’’ says Karhof. ''Musis Sacrum'' is a great examples of Gea's fascination of the language of music. Music is an abstract expression of art; only our hearing is directly involved. Must also has its own unique system of notation. The music score of ancient and modern-day cultures is the subject of a lot of her prints. Exploring with the will to fathom takes time. For example, the complex etching ''Musis Sacrum'' required months of preparation. This etching bears the name of, and its main form is the contours of the Arnhem theater (the Netherlands) where many concerts, including world music, are programmed. The print is populated by a celestial orchestra in which Karhof's childhood heroes Superman and Batman play along, nine Greek muses and a nine-piece world orchestra that makes music at the foot of the building. In this orchestra, a serious, harp-playing angel from the Italian Renaissance makes music with Thai instrumentalists and a mischievous-looking Mickey...
