Founders Furniture Company Game Tables

American

Founders Furniture Company was a short-lived 20th-century American brand that produced enduring mid-century modern designs. The company's streamlined dressers, lounge chairs and coffee tables feature solid wood construction and simple but elegant designs.

The history of Founders Furniture Company began in 1946 when it was established as a subsidiary of Knoll Inc., an esteemed manufacturer known mainly at the time for its pioneering workplace furniture — largely owing to the work of visionary designer Florence Knoll — so it launched Founders as its residential division.

During its years of operation, Founders hired celebrated American modernist designers like Milo Baughman and David Parmelee, who created sleek commodes and sideboards in mahogany and rosewood for the brand. Michigan native Jack Cartwright, a designer at Heritage during the 1950s, also worked at Founders as head designer before moving on to start his eponymous furniture company in 1963.

Founders continued operations until 1965 when Thomasville Furniture acquired it. Established in 1904 in North Carolina — home to other iconic mid-century brands such as Drexel and Broyhill — Thomasville expanded significantly during the 1960s and purchased several other American furniture manufacturers.

Today, the timeless styles and exceptional craftsmanship associated with Founders Furniture Company pieces continue to render them desirable even for today’s interiors.

Fabulous mod style MCM (mid-century modern) 1967 dining or game table from the New Design Idiom line by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin comprised of red vinyl base and white laminate top table, and 2 slipper chairs by Founders Furniture. Chairs have been reupholstered in a neoprene bonded sponge waterproof wet suit fabric by Big Z Fabric. Wonderful vintage condition. The laminate top has been cleaned and polished but two small rust spots remain. The vinyl is in beautiful shape and the chairs have been reupholstered. Please see photos. We try to show flaws. Circa, 1967-1971. NOTE: Due to photography/studio lighting color accuracy between the red vinyl on the chairs compared to the table base may be slightly different. The chairs are a bit lighter red than the table base. Does it really get any cooler than Mod style slipper chairs with RED wet suit fabric??? WELL… YES! Especially when you pair them with a FANTASTIC 1967 New Design Idiom table by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin!!! We are in LOVE with this awesome mid-century modern table and chairs set. First, these scoop style chairs are beautifully reupholstered in a neoprene bonded sponge waterproof wet suit fabric from Big Z Fabric…AND it’s 3 MM thick with buttons! SO COOL… The scoop design allows for a deep sitting experience that is comfortable and oh-so-full-of-style! And that’s not all!! This table!! WOW, it has a round white laminate top, and the base is pedestal or barrel style, and it is covered in its original fabulous smooth red vinyl fabric! When eclectic partnerships such as Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin come together and create, it results in furniture with style and presence that is simply unmatchable and highly sought after. And, Founders Furniture had been a division of Thomasville Furniture since 1965. This table and chairs set would be perfect in a sitting room or lounge area or even a breakfast nook! Want to add a little something groovy to your home? You just found it!! One of the most remarkable partnerships in the mid-century modern to modern design world was the phenomenal furniture making duo of Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin. Milo Baughman, a 20th Century genius of design, was born in Western Kansas in 1923 but was moved a year later by his family to Long Beach, California. He created Milo Baughman Design Inc. in 1947 and began designing interiors and furniture. Thayer Coggin was born in 1922 in Denton, North Carolina. Twelve years later his family moved 25 miles north to High Point where he grew up surrounded by furniture manufacturing. Thayer’s first love was furniture and Milo’s was design. So, together in 1953, after the two met, history was made in American furniture making by one of the greatest collaborations in the industry. During his career and before his death in 2003, Milo did design for several other companies as well as his own, but it is his collaboration with Thayer Coggin that is most impressive and sought-after today. Thayer Coggin, Inc. is still in business today even after its namesake’s death and is still offering classic selections from the late Baughman’s designs. Founders Furniture began as an independent company in 1947. The president was Edward Thrower. They merged with Thomasville Furniture in 1965 and were sold after to the Armstrong Group. Founders Furniture Company pieces are highly sought after today. High quality, classic style, and iconic manufacturers! This set including the 1967 New Design Idiom Table by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin AND two red slipper chairs...

What happened to the Drexel Heritage furniture company was that the brand went out of business. In 2014, the last plant operated by Drexel Heritage — known to mid-century modern furniture collectors as Drexel Furniture — closed its doors. The North Carolina company rebranded as Drexel in 2017. Then, in 2018, the Heritage Home Group, which was formed years earlier by an equity investor called KPS Capital Partners when it acquired Drexel Heritage and other manufacturers such as Lane and Broyhill, filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations. Production of Drexel furniture never resumed.
