Founders Furniture Company End Tables

American

Founders Furniture Company was a short-lived 20th-century American brand that produced enduring mid-century modern designs. The company's streamlined dressers, lounge chairs and coffee tables feature solid wood construction and simple but elegant designs.

The history of Founders Furniture Company began in 1946 when it was established as a subsidiary of Knoll Inc., an esteemed manufacturer known mainly at the time for its pioneering workplace furniture — largely owing to the work of visionary designer Florence Knoll — so it launched Founders as its residential division.

During its years of operation, Founders hired celebrated American modernist designers like Milo Baughman and David Parmelee, who created sleek commodes and sideboards in mahogany and rosewood for the brand. Michigan native Jack Cartwright, a designer at Heritage during the 1950s, also worked at Founders as head designer before moving on to start his eponymous furniture company in 1963.

Founders continued operations until 1965 when Thomasville Furniture acquired it. Established in 1904 in North Carolina — home to other iconic mid-century brands such as Drexel and Broyhill — Thomasville expanded significantly during the 1960s and purchased several other American furniture manufacturers.

Today, the timeless styles and exceptional craftsmanship associated with Founders Furniture Company pieces continue to render them desirable even for today’s interiors.

2 MCM Founders Corner Step Tables Black Brass Sabots Coronado Grp Luther Draper
By Founders Furniture Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Wonderful pair of vintage Mid-Century Modern corner step tables from Coronado Group by Luther Draper for Founders Furniture. Gorgeous condition. This pair of tables have been completely restored to their original glory. The tops have been stripped and repainted and the legs have been sanded and given a fresh finish. There may still be some age-related signs of use that refinishing did not catch. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa 1955. Note- We have listed here as well, if they are still available, an additional pair of tables 1 step and 1 side, in this same style but with a satin finish. Although their sheens are different, they would be very complimentary to each other. Double Delightful-ness!! This is a stunning pair of vintage Mid-Century Modern corner step tables from the Coronado Group designed in 1955 by Luther Draper for Founders Furniture. Their long straight legs with cross stretchers and beautiful brass sabots on the feet are eye catching and sophisticated. They are square with a corner angled step and comprised of a superb matte finished hardwood with Classic back beveled edges. They would look stunning beside your loveseat; living room sofa; dividing a corner or u-shaped sectional; or even a separation for perpendicularly placed sofas and chairs. They will add just the right Mid-Century Modern flair to your home. Founders Furniture was started in 1947 as a subsidiary of the esteemed Knoll International for their residential line and then merged with Thomasville Furniture in 1965. It is said that Luther Draper designed for the whose-who of high caliber furniture companies in the mid-century. He designed The Coronado Group collection for Founders Furniture in 1955. He had an unmistakable clean, modern mark he left on his work. He also designed fabulous furniture including the “India Teakwood” collection for White Furniture Company and the well known “Boomerang Desk” for Alma, which was recognized for its prize-winning office furnishings. He also worked in High Point, North Carolina, for such well-known firms as Henredon, Myrtle Desk...

Charred End Table in Loblolly Pine with Single Drawer and Triangular Legs
By Moran Woodworked Furniture, Michael Moran and Celia Gibson
Located in Gallatin, NY
Charred Geometric Commode, Edition of 25. Here our single drawer modern interpretation of the traditional bedroom mainstay is rendered in charred Loblolly Pine; with mitered edges, the undulating texture wraps the case in deep color. As a counter point, the graphic, triangular hand-tapered legs remain clear and golden. A single deep drawer opens with a gentle pull from underneath the drawer's face. The cabinet is scaled for a place beside the bed or sofa with room for a lamp, several books and a glass of water. The Charred Collection evolved from the traditional roots of ancient Japanese wood construction, which emphasized a need for rot and bug tolerance while maintaining a consistent structural integrity. Our burning process, based on this model, entails binding three boards into a chimney for a controlled burn over a small firebox. The resulting boards are wire brushed and receive multiple coats of a clear zero VOC, water based finish. This ensures their durability, functionality and longevity as an elegant and unexpected addition to a space. Pinus teada l. This massive Pine was the last of her age in the North Charleston neighborhood where it had grown stout over 80 plus ripe years. Too stately to go to waste and so as not to end her days as mulch at the city dump, we endeavored, with the support of a local tree service, to have her cut into long lengths for our use. The striking wood garnered from her trunk, with pale stripes and blueing from Charleston's humid climate, has made each of the pieces made from this Loblolly a unique celebration of Pine’s stria-like grain and the environment in which this tree grew. If your time frame is a constraint, please be in touch to discuss possibilities. This design can be customized in both scale and material. Warm Cherry and bright brass both pair beautifully with charred Pine, and widening the case allows it to sit comfortably alongside a king size bed. We also use this technique regularly on larger custom items like sideboards, daybeds and credenzas as well as on smaller lamps and bookends. Please be in touch with us if you would like to discuss custom work. Most of the pieces we create at Moran Woodworked Furniture...

2 MCM Founders Furn Side Tables Black Brass Sabots Coronado Group Luther Draper
By Founders Furniture Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Wonderful pair of vintage mid-century modern side tables or end tables. One straight table and one step table from the Coronado Group by Luther Draper for Founders Furniture comprised of hardwood, brass sabots, and black satin painted finish. Beautiful vintage condition. Both tables have been completely restored; however, may still retain small insignificant signs of their vintage patina. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa 1955. NOTE- We have listed here as well, if they are still available, an additional pair of corner step tables in this same style but with a satin finish. Although their sheens are different, they would be very complimentary to each other. These tables are much like “that little black dress,” they just go with anything, and they look stunning!! One side table and one step table designed by Luther Draper in 1955 as part of the Coronado Group for Founders Furniture. Aren’t they FABULOUS? Their straight legs and simple design are classic mid-century modern but versatile enough to go with many other design styles. Both are rectangle and comprised of luscious hardwood with time-honored back beveled edges. The step table’s primary surface is a bit shorter than the side table’s surface, but the upper tiered step is at the same height, so when combined they complement each other nicely. The legs are long, square, and straight with cross stretchers and gorgeous brass sabots on all the feet. The original black finish has been beautifully refreshed, and they have a silky satin finish. They will add the perfect mid-century modern touch to any room in which you wish to place them. We truly love these wonderful tables, and they are sure to be your new favorites too.
