Impressionist English fox hunter with hounds in an extensive British landscape
By George Wright
Located in Woodbury, CT
George Wright (1860–1942)
Fox Hunting Scene
Oil on canvas, signed lower left
Circa 1920
Presented in a newly made, hand-carved Watts-style frame
A spirited and richly atmospheric example of English sporting art by George Wright, one of the foremost British equestrian painters of the early 20th century. This oil on canvas captures the thrilling energy of a mounted fox hunt as riders in scarlet coats gallop across an open countryside, accompanied by a lively pack of hounds coursing through a stream.
Wright’s deft brushwork and ability to render movement and musculature make his work particularly admired among collectors of sporting and animal art. The moody sky and brisk terrain contribute to a sense of action unfolding in real time—a hallmark of Wright’s dynamic compositions.
Signed lower left, the painting is framed in a superb hand-crafted Watts-style frame, lending an additional sense of classical elegance and elevating its visual presence. George Wright’s works are held in private collections and continue to be exhibited by specialists in British sporting painting...

Hudson River School was an informal association was America's first so-called school of painting and the dominant landscape style until the Civil War. The name derives from a group of 19th-century landscape painters working in New York state. With realistic composition, they depicted romantic views of unsettled areas of the Hudson River Valley especially lakes, rocky gorges, and forests in the Catskill Mountains. About a fourth of these artists utilized luminism or effects with special lighting techniques to convey lofty emotions through contrasts of light and dark. Included in this Hudson River luminist category were Washington Allston, Albert Bierstadt, William Hart, and Frederic Edwin Church...
