Harold Roney Art

American, 1899-1986

Harold Roney was born in Sullivan, Illinois, in 1899. His artistic training began at the Chicago Art Academy and was followed by training at Art Institute of Chicago. After working for a period as an art teacher in South Bend, Illinois, he moved to Houston in 1925, and moved again after three years to the Boerne hill country outside San Antonio. Although most of his life was spent in Texas, the state that he is closest identified with, he did spend several years during the 1930s training in New Hope, Pennsylvania with John Folinsbee and Harry Leith-Ross. Roney received further training from two Texas painters, Harry A. deYoung and Paul Schuman. He was a landscape painter of some note and never failed to enjoy painting the Texas landscape. A colorist of note, he primarily painted in oil with a brush or palette knife. Roney was also known as The Cloud Master. In 1958, he began teaching at the Froman School of Art in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, where he continued teaching until 1978. Roney exhibited at the Southern States Art League, the Connecticut Academy of the Fine Arts, Phillips Mill in New Hope, Pennsylvania and at the New Orleans Art Association. He also was the subject of several one-man shows. Roney's work is in the collection of the Witte Museum; the Austin, Texas Public Library; the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas; the South Bend, Illinois Public Schools; the Southwest Texas State Teachers College and the Austin Art League. Roney died in 1986 from the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

By Jules Pierre van Biesbroeck

Woman in a garden. Oil sketch on cardboard. Unsigned. This work will be recorded in the catalogue raisonné of the work of the artist currently in preparation. Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...

At the Yacht Club
By Edward Cucuel
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Artist Edward Cucuel and his wife Clara Lotte von Marcard spent their first two decades together in Germany, mostly in a villa on Lake Ammersee in Holzhausen near Munich. It is the works created in this period, mainly outdoor scenes of young women in fashionable attire of the day, that are most collected and appreciated among his works. It’s easy to see why- they capture an elegance and sense of calm and easy leisure- of long days in gardens or by the water.  This is one of those captured moments with a well-dressed woman watching the sailing yacht...
