Edward Cucuel
At the Yacht Club

Circa 1920

About the Item

Artist Edward Cucuel and his wife Clara Lotte von Marcard spent their first two decades together in Germany, mostly in a villa on Lake Ammersee in Holzhausen near Munich. It is the works created in this period, mainly outdoor scenes of young women in fashionable attire of the day, that are most collected and appreciated among his works. It’s easy to see why- they capture an elegance and sense of calm and easy leisure- of long days in gardens or by the water.  This is one of those captured moments with a well-dressed woman watching the sailing yachts of Starnberg, Germany. Cucuel labels the work "Im Yacht Club" announcing that he is a member of the group, and enjoying the view along with the lady as he preserves it in art. Early in his career Cucuel was primarily influenced by the German Expressionist movement but later joined the artists’ group Die Scholle and transitioned to a more Impressionist style. This piece is certainly from that later period given the active brushwork and heavy impasto so typical of Impressionism.  The artist cleverly puts the heaviest impasto in the foreground to add immediacy and visual interest to the figure and surrounding flowers and greenery. The near shore and sailboats retain some texture, while the far hills and pastel sky fade into soft, smooth strokes. These aspects along with the outstanding color work create a serene and contemplative scene, as if we are in the shade right next to the figure, also enjoying the view.    The painting's large size and square format make it seem like a window to another time and place. This work was part of our gallery owner, Joe Vallejo's personal collection for more than 20 years. Sight Size: 32 x 32 inches Vallejo Gallery features the finest in marine and maritime antiques, artifacts and fine art including pieces of naval and yachting history including the America’s Cup, the age of the clipper ships and merchant ships through to the great passenger and ocean liners of the early 20th Century. • Amercan Merchant Ship in Philadelphia Harbor
    By Thomas Birch
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Thomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century. Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own. The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore. The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...

  • Florentine Signed Gordigiani Portrait Landscape Painting 19th century oil canvas
    By Michele Gordigiani
    Located in Florence, IT
The scene is set in a luxuriant and blossoming garden-on which we can see a pergola vine training and an ionic column-outlined with fast and wide brush strokes of faint and pastel colours. In some parts of the background is revealed the preparatory layer, because it’s unfinished, but we can presume the presence of a light blue sky with some clouds, deducing it from a confrontation with the left side, where the sky was started. In the foreground a boy dressed up with a style reminding medieval echoes looks like observing a flower or a small animal that he’s holding, as the position of the fingers-that seems caressing something-make suppose. It's signed on the right side: MG. (Michele Gordigiani). The physiognomy, the expression and the hairstyle recall Edoardo Gordigiani...
