After a draftsman apprenticeship in Bern and training as a graphic artist in Geneva, Wetli worked as a draftsman in a Bernese animation studio and from 1942 for the magazine of a Geneva-based company. From 1949–56 he directed the graphic workshop of the men's clothing company Frey in Olten. He then opened his studio and worked mainly for Swissair and other major companies such as the Swiss traffic center and the SBB. Working with the airline, Wetli has been allowed to travel overseas to the United States, South America, Asia and Africa. His passion for painting was discovered by the illustrator and graphic designer in the 1950s.
