Isaac Israëls Art

Dutch, 1865-1934

Isaac Israëls was the son of distinguished Hague School artist Jozef Israëls and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.

At the age of 16, Isaac sold his first painting to the famous Dutch collector Hendrik Willem Mesdag and began to exhibit with his father at the official Salon des artistes français in Paris. He enjoyed spending summers with his father at the seaside resort of Scheveningen near the Hague, where his father’s guests often included Édouard Manet. Influenced by the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas, and a lifelong friend of the Impressionist painter George Hendrik Breitner — with whom he lived and painted the streets of Amsterdam — Isaac became associated with the Dutch avant-garde Tachtigers group of artists and writers.

Living in Paris and London during the Edwardian period, Israëls returned to the Netherlands during the First World War and primarily became a portraitist. One of his most famous sitters was the famous Dutch-German courtesan and spy, Mata Hari (executed in France in 1917), a work that is now held at the Kröller-Müller Museum at Otterlo in the Netherlands. Israëls traveled widely across Europe, India and Southeast Asia during the 1920s and 1930s. Notable are the sketches he produced of Balinese gamelan players in the former Dutch East Indies. He even won the Gold Medal in the 1928 Olympic Games for his painting Red Rider. His paintings and sketches, held in several international private collections, were showcased in an acclaimed 2012 exhibition at the City Archive of Amsterdam.

Artist: Isaac Israëls
The Royal Stock Exchange By Isaac Israëls
By Isaac Israëls
Located in New Orleans, LA
Isaac Israëls 1865-1934 Dutch The Royal Stock Exchange Signed "Isaac Israels" (lower right) Oil on canvas Isaac Israëls' The Royal Stock Exchange offers a compelling perspective of the preeminent economic institution at the turn of the century. The bustling streets of Cornhill and Threadneedle, filled with London's iconic double-decker buses, converge towards the pinnacle of the renowned building, receding into the bright background. Israëls was known for riding double-decker buses, which allowed him to enjoy the city from an elevated vantage point. The unique point-of-view of The Royal Stock Exchange invites viewers to experience a transient moment as a tourist in the center of the city, above the bustling crowds. Born in Amsterdam in 1865, Isaac Israëls was a prodigious artist who demonstrated innate talent from a young age, much like his esteemed father, Jozef Israëls, a prominent member of the influential Hague School. Often called the "Amsterdam Impressionist," his association with the renowned Tachtigers, a group of Dutch artists and intellectuals, had a profound impact on his artistic vision. Sharing the belief that form must harmonize with content, the Tachtigers nurtured Israëls' development of a highly evocative and emotive style that perfectly complemented his emotionally charged subjects. While Israëls was identified as an Impressionist during his time, his distinctive technique, reminiscent of the master Paul Cézanne, was characterized by bold painterly brushstrokes, rich color palettes and a meticulous spatial arrangement, setting him apart as a masterful artist of his era. Early in his career, Israëls exhibited a keen eye for capturing the vibrancy of Amsterdam's streets and cabarets, skillfully portraying the energy and atmosphere of urban life with remarkable artistry. Drawn by the allure of Paris, he eventually made Montmartre his home, immersing himself in the vibrant artistic community alongside luminaries such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas. In this dynamic environment, Israëls' mastery of his style emerged, fueled by his deep appreciation for modern city life. In 1911, Israëls experienced his father's death, which led him to seek solace abroad. Reluctant to return to his homeland, he moved to London in 1913. Inspired by the bustling streets of West End, the lively pedestrians along the Thames and the iconic landmarks of Piccadilly Circus and Regent Street, as well as ballet students, Israëls found abundant creative inspiration in his new surroundings. Israëls' paintings of London, including this very work, are highly regarded for their energy and spirit. Considered rare gems in his oeuvre, his delightful creations perfectly capture the essence of London's dynamic vitality in the years before the onset of the First World War. During his lifetime, Israëls regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon and was celebrated for his ability to capture the beauty of everyday life in a way that was both poetic and poignant. His paintings are housed in the collections of prestigious museums worldwide, including the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Brooklyn Museum. His oeuvre was prominently showcased in the Kunstmuseum Den Haag’s 2008-2009 exhibition Jozef and Isaac Israëls. "Boulevard of Paris", 20th Century oil on canvas by Spanish artist E. Grau Sala
By Emilio Grau Sala
Located in Madrid, ES
EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 BOULEVARD OF PARIS signed Grau Sala (lower right) oil on canvas 25-1/2 X 32 inches (65 X 81 cm.) framed: 36-1/4 X 42-1/2 inches (92 X 108 cm.) PROVENANCE Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006 Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...
