Jean-Gabriel Domergue Portrait Paintings

French, 1889-1962

Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born in Bordeaux in 1889. As a talented and precocious young painter, Domergue was already exhibiting works at seventeen for the Salon Des Artistes Français in Paris. In 1913, he was awarded the prestigious Second Prize of Rome, later winning the gold medal in the 1920 show. Domergue painted over 3000 portraits during his lifetime, from nude portrayals of fashionable actresses and young dancers to prized aristocratic sitters, such as Liane de Pougy and Nadine, the Baroness of Rothschild. Domergue not only transformed the representation of women in paint, but held an important role in the evolution of women’s fashion in France from the 1930’s onwards, designing dresses and hats for numerous famous couturiers including Paul Poiret and Henry Marque. Domergue was made Knight of the Legion of Honour and a Fellow of the French Academy of Fine Arts.

JEAN GABRIEL DOMERGUE French, 1889 – 1962 "JEUNE FEMME AUX FLEURS" Signed & dated "Jean-Gabriel Domergue ´28 " (lower right) With the Atelier stamp on the stretcher and canvas on the reverse Oil on canvas 32 X 25-3/4 inches (81 x 65 cm.) framed: 39-1/2 X 33-1/4 inches (100 X 84 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Madrid Note: We are grateful to Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work which is recorded in the archives of the Artist. Painter born in Bordeaux, in 1889 and died in Paris in 1962. He began painting his mother's portraits very soon. He studied at the National Superior School of Fine Arts. The artist considered his teacher and inspiring Degas. Between 1904 and 1907 he joined Fauvism. In 1905 he participated in the "Autumn Hall" and in the "Hall of Independents". In 1907 he presented his 1st individual exhibition at the Vollard Gallery. He specialized in female portraits of Parisian ladies, creating a unique, sophisticated and elegant female portrait prototype that characterized him forever. He played an essential role in the evolution of women's fashion of his time. He designed numerous dresses, hats and accessories for famous designers such as Paul Poiret and Henry Marque It goes down in history as the architect of a new type of woman, thin, with an elegant air, always with style, with unusual elongated necks, with impressive slanted eyes, that seem to look at the world in amazement, perhaps because they express a feeling of freedom towards Society and its norms. With these paintings of women, he showed the world the true French, elegant, beautiful and with a gooseneck. In 1914 he won the Rome Prize. Many celebrities of the time posed for the artist, Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, etc. But although he painted numerous nude actresses...

A Young Girl Reading a Book, Pointillist Artist
Located in Stockholm, SE
"A Young Girl Reading a Book" is a captivating portrait by Swedish artist Gustaf Arnolds. Arnolds was a prolific painter whose roots began in Vingåker and later in Ronneby from his teenage years. His educational journey in art took him through prestigious institutions such as Althins målarskola and the Tallbergska grafikskolan in Stockholm, followed by a significant period at the Konstakademien, Stockholm, between 1904 and 1909. His talent and dedication were recognized early on, earning him a scholarship to Paris, a city that would deeply influence his artistic direction. This particular work, likely painted shortly after his return to Sweden, reveals a profound influence from his time in Paris. It portrays a young girl absorbed in reading a book, a simple yet profound subject that Arnolds imbues with a sense of tranquility and introspection. The background hints at a serene landscape, dotted with quaint houses, a nod to the everyday beauty surrounding us. What sets this piece apart is Arnolds’ technique, reminiscent of pointillism but distinguished by longer, more expressive brush strokes that add a vibrant texture and depth to the canvas. This method showcases Arnolds' unique adaptation of the techniques he encountered during his Parisian studies, particularly during his interactions with Nils Dardel...

MANE-KATZ RABBIS, c. 1935 Oil on canvas 18 H. x 14 W. 1/2 in. (45.5 x 35.8 cm.) Signed PROVENANCE Dominion Gallery, Montreal Christies, New York, November 04, 1982. Lot 177: $11,000 Private Collection, New Jersey, 1982-2021 Estate of the above, 2021. Raised in an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, Mane-Katz was born in the Ukraine and became an early 20th-century artist, known especially for portraits and paintings with Jewish themes. From childhood, he had been influenced by stories of Jewish mysticism, which was reflected in his paintings. He had a peripatetic life between Russia, France, Israel, and America. He first studied art in Kiev at the Beaux Arts Academy, and in 1913, went to Paris where he associated with Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall and continued his art studies there at the Beaux Arts Academy. During World War I, he tried to join the Foreign Legion but was rejected because he was too short. He went back in Russia again, this time joining the Soviet Revolution but rejected the cause because he was so horrified by Josef Stalin. He worked briefly for the Russian ballets, and in 1921, he returned to Paris where in 1927 he took French citizenship. For the next twelve years, he traveled widely, showing his art work and doing many paintings. In 1939, as World War II was breaking out, he was drafted by the French and then was taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and went to the United States and remained there until 1945, exhibiting his paintings at Katia Granoff Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery. After the war, he returned to Paris where he had exhibited in the Salons. In Paris to the end of his career, he worked happily, painting hundreds of portraits of rabbis...

JEAN-GABRIEL DOMERQUE "ELEGANTE PARISIANNE" GOUACHE, SIGNED FRANCE, DATED 1924 16 X 11.75 INCHES FRAMED SIZE 23.75 X 19.75 INCHES Jean-Gabriel Domergue 1889-1962 Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born in Bordeaux in 1889. His father, a journalist and art critic, took him to visit artists’ studios, which quickly revealed his attraction to painting. Shortly after arriving in Paris, at the age of fourteen Jean-Gabriel Domergue won first prize in a municipal drawing competition and received his first commission, a portrait of a woman. Starting in 1906 he went to several studios. Jean-Gabriel Domergue spent time with Toulouse-Lautrec, a distant cousin, in his studio, and with him discovered the Moulin Rouge and its dancers. Domergue borrowed and then shared a studio above the studio of Degas, on rue Massé. Despite a cold welcome at first, Degas befriended him and for more than a year taught him how to look, and to see. Domergue also met Boldini, whose fiery and distant touch would particularly influence him. Starting in 1920, the year of his gold medal at the Salon of French Artists, his work was extremely popular. Jean-Gabriel Domergue was sought out by advertisers for catalog covers and posters, by the fashion world as a designer, and as a painter of “la Parisienne”. With a skilled and spiritual brush, Jean-Gabriel Domergue had the talent to convey the racy, light, sparkling side of a pretty woman. Despite his apparent ease, Domergue worked a great deal, and his sketchbooks are abundant. Domergue declared himself the “ creator of the pin-up ” and would be the unmatched portraitist of the French and foreign aristocracy, painting Nadine de Rothschild...

Located in New Orleans, LA
A slender, urbane Parisian woman sits under the shade of her parasol in this vibrant oil portrait by Jean-Gabriel Domergue. The young beauty dons a cream colored hat that stylishly coordinates with her dress and parasol, standing in striking contrast to the verdant green background of the surrounding park. Her confident expression and casual air are characteristic of the women in Domergue's most captivating works. Born in Bordeaux in 1889, Domergue studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He was only 17 years old when he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français for the first time, winning the Prix du Rome in 1911 and a gold medal in 1920. While landscapes dominated his early oeuvre, from the 1920s he changed his focus to what would become his trademark subject, la belle Parisienne. Domergue's works captured the joie de vivre that permeated post-WWI Paris...
