Luigi Servolini Still-life Prints

1906-1981

One of the great masters of Italian engraving, Luigi Servolini, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, then perfected himself in the history of medieval and modern art at the University of Florence. He has held various roles within the Italian academic world and his production as an art critic is also impressive, a profession he did simultaneously with that of an engraver. In 1935, he promoted the creation of a xylograph museum in Carpi, the birthplace of the master Ugo da Carpi, inviting Italian xylographers to send their artworks, which today constitute an important nucleus of the museum itself, inaugurated in 1937. Together with Carlo Carrà, Servolini founded the association of the Italian engravers. His woodcuts are characterized by a classic cut and a formal order and are soon recognizable. He has been present in as many as six biennials of Venice.

Still Life with Watermelon - Woodcut Print by L. Servolini - 1977
By Luigi Servolini
Located in Roma, IT
Natura morta con anguria (Still Life with Watermelon) is an original colored xylograph on Fabriano Cotton watermarked paper realized by the Italian artist and xylograph master, Luigi Servolini (1906-1981). A beautiful original print, representing a colorful still life composed by a jug, a knife cutting a watermelon and a glass of red wine, is hand-signed in pencil by the artist on the lower right margin. Realized with a fresh line, a superb technique and a very high sensibility to colors, this classical composition with a formal order is a beautiful artist's proof. In excellent condition, except for some light sporadic stains on the margins, a defect does not affect the image, demonstrating a good inking and a full mastery of this artistic medium, this contemporary artwork comes with the certificate of authenticity (a blue ink stamp on the back on lower right,). Written and signed by the son of the artist, Gen. Giancarlo Servolini, this certificate explains that the original wood-blocks used for this print were destroyed after the realizations and specifies the edition ( 125 specimens with Roman numerals, 125 specimens with Arab numerals, 14 artist's proof). A really beautiful still life, perfect for every kind of furniture!
