Mino Maccari Animal Prints

Italian, 1898-1989

Popular painter, engraver and journalist Mino Maccari is known for his often controversial and explosive prints, drawings and paintings, and is considered to be one of the most important Italian satirical artists of the 20th century.

Born in 1898 in Siena, Maccari joined the Italian Army at age 19 to serve in World War I as an artillery officer. Afterward, he attended law school, graduating in 1920 and working as a lawyer until 1926.

While working as a lawyer, Maccari developed an interest in painting and engraving, moonlighting as an artist. Despite his lack of formal training, his works captured the attention of local critics, and he debuted with the Group Labronico, an organization of like-minded Italian artists that included painter Beppe Guzzi.

In 1924, publisher Angiolo Bencini contacted Maccari to oversee the printing operations of Il Selvaggio, a fascist magazine in which Maccari’s first satirical illustrations and engravings appeared. Until 1942, Maccari was editor-in-chief of the controversial magazine, which featured contributions from Futurist artists such as Ardengo Soffici, Carlo Carrà and others.

Throughout his career, Maccari participated in numerous notable exhibitions and shows throughout Italy and Europe. His figurative drawings and paintings, portraits and exotic nude works gained considerable acclaim from critics and collaborative artists.

In 1927, he participated in the "Second International Exhibition of Modern Engraving" and the "Third Exhibition of the Tuscan Union of Arts." The following year, Maccari exhibited at the Venice Biennale, where he would win the International Prize for engraving in 1948.

From the late 1940s to 1963, Maccari collaborated with the liberal magazine Il Mondo, contributing several satirical illustrations and engravings. By this time, he had become a well-established and respected artist in Italy and, in 1959, was named director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.

In 1963, Maccari was recognized again for his works, winning the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize for painting. That same year, he became president of the San Luca Academy.

Throughout the 1970s, Maccari continued painting and drawing, creating provocative works such as Dominatrix Woman, a bold work in watercolor and pastel, the diminutive pen drawing Trampled and his erotic charcoal and watercolor drawing Mata Hari.

Even after Maccari’s death in 1989, his works continue to be a talking point among avid modern art collectors.

Art deco handcolored woodcut on paper - Walking black panther by Gaston Suisse
Located in Les Acacias GE, GE
Somogy Éditions d'art, Paris 2013, reproduite page 105 (un autre exemplaire reproduit) The artist made a wood engraving of which he made about twenty prints himself. These proofs were not marketed as is, Gaston Suisse reworked each of the proofs using Indian ink washes in order to obtain different effects for each proof, which are thus unique original works. Born in 1896 in a family of artists, his father Georges was a close friend of Siegfried Bing and a great lover of Japanese art and a bibliophile. He passed his taste for art to his son whom he often took to draw at the Botanic Garden . Around 1910, Gaston Suisse, who hasn't entered yet the artistic school, met Paul Jouve, then 18 years his elder, who was already famous. In 1911, at the age of 17, he entered the National School of Decorative Art where he followed the teachings of Paul Renouard. Thanks to his knowledge and taste for the Japanese art, he chose lacquer painting as his specialty. His practice of this noble and demanding subject were so much appreciated that he was awarded with two gold medals in 1913 and 1914. Mobilized during the war , he joined the army and go in Salonika where he found his friend Jouve. In 1918, he finished his studies at the School of Applied Arts in order to perfect his training. He learned in particular the techniques of gilding and oxidation of metals. The first productions of Gaston Suisse, furniture and objects in lacquer with geometrical patterns, were an instant success and Suisse was appointed as member of Salon d'Automne in 1924, the very year of his first exhibition. Considered as an artist-decorator, his sincere and deep friendship with Jouve linked him in parallel with the groups of the animaliers of the Jardin des Plantes and became a close friend of Edouard-Marcel Sandoz. When travelling to Maghreb and Middle-East between 1923 and 1925, he produced numerous drawings representing antelopes, apes and fennec foxes...

'Lida & the Swan', New York Armory Show, Ashcan School, ASL, NYMOMA, AIC, LACMA
By Arthur B. Davies
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'Arthur B. Davies' for Arthur Bowen Davies (American, 1862-1928) and created circa 1915. An early twentieth-century sugar-lift aquatint showing Zeus in the guise of a swan, reclining and cradling Lida in his wings while King Tyndareus ponders the mutability of human circumstance. Born in Utica, New York, Arthur Davies attended the Chicago Academy of Design from 1879 to 1882. He furthered his studies at the Chicago Art Institute, before moving to New York City in 1885 where he studied at the Art Students League and Gotham Art Students League. In 1893, he made the first of many trips to Europe, visiting Holland, Paris, and London. He became an arch-exponent of Modernism and the central organizing figure of 1913's watershed Armory Show. Davies developed a style that combined visionary Symbolism with elements of Tonalism and Cubism. Who Was Who in American Art describes him as an “…important but enigmatic Modernist whose work was poetic, mysterious, and visionary”. Davies was the recipient of many gold medals and prizes and juried awards and his work is held in the permanent collections of museums nationwide, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. Additional biographical information follows, written by Catherine Southwick and Robert Torchia from the National Gallery of Art Online Editions: Arthur B. Davies’s mystical, mysterious paintings hearken back to 19th-century romanticism, even while Davies aligned himself with American artists advancing the most radical ideals of their day. Davies was born on September 26, 1862, in Utica, New York, the son of English and Welsh parents who had immigrated to the United States in 1856. He first took art lessons as a teenager from a local landscape painter, Dwight Williams...
