Original in Berlin Coffee and Cocktail Tables

German

Step inside the 5,400-square-foot home of Original in Berlin, a celebrated outpost of mid-century modern furniture in Germany, and in addition to floor-to-ceiling shelving filled with design classics, you’ll encounter three more of the owner’s particular passions — decorative Murano glassware, metalwork by Carl Auböck and ceramics by American artist Stan Bitters.

Original in Berlin founder Lars Triesch can trace his history as a collector to one life-changing moment. In 1998, at age 18, he became the proud owner of a 1956 Chevy Bel Air — a signature piece of American mid-century iconography. Years later, on a visit to California, he found himself charmed by the legacy of the important design movement — and a seed of inspiration was planted.

Flash forward to 2010, the year Triesch broke ground for his own gallery Original in Berlin in Alexanderplatz in Friedrichshain — which was once East Berlin. Stocking rare pieces by Gio Ponti and Charlotte Perriand, as well as American classics like Daniel Wenger’s 1970s Lotus lounge chair, Triesch prides himself on his extensive and diverse inventory. “I usually go with my taste,” he says, explaining his buying strategy, “and that’s always changing.”

Three hundred feet from his gallery, Triesch has opened a second showroom, in which he presents his New Originals collection: authorized reproductions that are handcrafted to order by highly skilled artisans. Currently, it features seating designed by Mira Nakashima and a sofa, credenza, tables and even a letter box by the late Californian architect Ray Kappe, who is best known for the dramatically cantilevered, open-plan Pacific Palisades home he constructed for himself in the mid-’60s.

With his holistic take on preserving a design era as multifaceted and innovative as mid-century modernism, Lars offers his clients an extensive network of craftsmen, architects and designers alike. These days, having made a name for himself, his comprehensive design expertise is internationally valued, not only by collectors but also by the top auction houses.

Historians are not completely sure where tapestries originated. Ancient literature from Rome, Greece and other civilizations does not specifically mention tapestries, but that doesn't mean that they didn't exist. We do know that the Ancient Egyptians did produce and utilize tapestries, as examples have been discovered in the tombs of Thutmose IV and Tutankhamen. The word tapestry wasn't coined until the 15th century, and it originated in England. Find a wide variety of tapestries on 1stDibs.

An original artwork is an artwork made by the hand of the artist, be it a painting, a drawing, a carved sculpture, etc. Because of their fabrication process, bronze sculptures have a somehow different meaning of "original", which may depend on the local legislation : in France, a numbered bronze molding made directly from the artist's mold qualifies as an "original" if the total number of specimens is less or equals to eight, plus four "artist's proofs".
    Irena Orlov ArtFebruary 25, 2021
When we refer to "original" it simply means a unique painting made by the artist's own hand.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
An original painting is anything thought to be the true work of the artist instead of an imitation or reproduction. Original art can be in any media, as long as it is the first of that piece of art.
    Irena Orlov ArtFebruary 25, 2021
When we refer to "original" it simply means a unique painting made by the artist's own hand. Acrylic, oil, engraving, watercolor, or drawings are authentic techniques that allow the artist to capture his or her distinctive stamp: such as textures, a particular way of brushstroke, colors, lines, among other elements. But besides, the idea must be unique, the result of creativity, which makes the work more valuable and desirable.

No, a lithograph is not an original. Lithographs are prints, which are authorized reproductions of works produced by artists. To produce a lithograph, an artist applies an image to a stone. Then, they treat the stone with chemicals to impart the image into it. Finally, they apply ink and transfer the image onto paper or another medium. Shop a large selection of lithographs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
An original lithograph is a print made by way of a specific printing method (one of the most commonly used methods in the 20th and 21st centuries). With respect to lithography, the process begins by drawing on or painting on a stone surface with an oil-based substance, such as a greasy crayon or tusche (an oily wash). The stone is then covered with water, which is repelled by the oily areas. Oil-based ink is then applied to the wet stone, adhering only to the oily image. The stone is then covered with a sheet of paper and run through a press.

To tell if a print is an original, examine the details closely. Typically, original prints feature high-quality textured paper rather than smooth poster-type paper. In addition, original prints will usually feature the artist's signature and a number in pencil or pen. If the signature is printed on it, the print is less likely to be original. When in doubt, a knowledgeable art dealer or experienced appraiser can assist you with identifying original prints. Shop a large collection of prints on 1stDibs.

The original Cartier Tank watch, which was emblematic of a stark departure from the renowned jewelry house’s curved and round watch faces in that its case resembled the FT-17’s cockpit, served as a sleek update to the Santos watch. Crafted in 1917, one year before the Great War came to a close, Cartier’s Tank watch reportedly borrowed its clean, sharp lines and boxy silhouette from France’s legendary Renault FT-17 light tank, itself a compact and extraordinary design that inspired numerous copies. When the Tank watch went to market, Cartier offered a limited run in Paris. After those quickly sold, it was given a name, the Tank Normale. The timepiece took off in popularity, but only slightly more than 30 were made in 1920 and annual production has been slow over the years since then. Find Cartier Tank watches on 1stDibs.

Art Nouveau originated in France and Great Britain, but variants materialized elsewhere. The visual vocabulary of Art Nouveau was particularly influenced by the soft colors and abstract images of nature as portrayed in Japanese art prints, which arrived in large numbers in the West after open trade was forced upon Japan in the 1860s. Impressionist artists were moved by the artistic tradition of Japanese woodblock printmaking and other modes of art and design in the East Asian country. The Art Nouveau style quickly reached a wide audience in Europe via advertising posters, book covers, illustrations and other work by such artists as Aubrey Beardsley, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha. While all Art Nouveau designs share common formal elements, different countries and regions produced their own versions. Explore a selection of Art Nouveau furniture, jewelry and art on 1stDibs.
