Pierre Chapo Furniture

French, 1927-1987

Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.

By Pierre Chapo

Very nice sculptural S28 chairs designed by Pierre Chapo and made in his own atelier in France in 1972. Pierre Chapo discovered Alsatian architecture, the wood structures of the traditional half-timbered houses and the tried an tested household furniture. The interior of a home was the vital space in wintertime, and the heart of the house was a large table, where family and friends gathered for meals and winter evenings. Struck by the traditional "Aslation chair," Chapo decided to modernize it . In 1972, he designed the S28 chair, keeping the basic characteristics of the "Alsatian chair...

Pierre Chapo B10 Wardrobe in Elm, France, 1960
By Pierre Chapo
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
A very nice and minimal B10 wardrobe with adjustable shelves, designed by Pierre Chapo and was made in his own atelier in France, 1960. The B10 is one of the more familiar designs that Chapo made, as this was a modular principle what he designed, many different versions were made. This cabinet has a fantastic honey colour and beautiful patina to it. There are no significant marks of usage. The wood is honey coloured and has a lovely grain. There are a lot of woodworking details such as the typical corners and the almost invisible grip handles along the entire cabinets doors, making them a part of the design and not lose aesthetically beauty. The beautiful, crafted corner connections are of course a trademark for the designs by Chapo which he used in many of his designs. A nice detail is that the left door is wider then the right, which gives it a nice and interesting look. The cabinet has 2 shelves on the inside which are adjustable in different heights and there is also a brass bar to hang cloths...

Pierre Chapo S10 Lounge Chair, France, 1964
By Pierre Chapo
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Fantastic original model S10 lounge chair designed by Pierre Chapo and manufactured in his own atelier in Gordes, France 1964. This chair has a solid elm wooden frame which has an exquisite, detailed structure which is refined with Chapo’s signature mortise and tenon joints. The elm wood has a nice honey coloured wood toon and shows interesting grains to the structure. These signature joints are the assembly principle which allowed Chapo to extend his catalogue in 1964. The S10 became quickly one of the leading models at the Chapo gallery. The chair has a moveable back which brings more comfort when sitting on it as the back will adjust itself to your position. The chair has its original natural leather which is in good condition with a beautiful and original authentic patina which gives the chair a lot of extra character and makes it also more unique. This chair is a very early production, the woodworking details of this design are visible in the book by M Hagen...
