Ricardo Mazal Paintings
Mexican, b. 1950
Ricardo Mazal, one of Mexico’s most prominent contemporary artists, is known for his lush abstract oil paintings in which he explores spiritual themes.
He is perhaps best known for his near decade-long investigations into the sacred burial rituals of diverse cultures, from the Mayan tomb of The Red Queen in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico, to the Buddhist prayer flags of Bhutan. These studies yielded a succession of large, multidisciplinary bodies of work reflective of the artist’s observations. However, his recent most series, Violeta, Silence in Prague and Full Circle, are imbued with a more personal narrative, increasingly transitioning Mazal from witness to author.
Ricardo Mazal has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe. Since 2000, he has had fourteen individual museum exhibitions in Mexico and the United States, including five retrospectives of his work at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Monterrey (2000), the Museo de Arte Moderno de la Ciudad de México (2006), the Museo de Arte de Querétaro (2009), the Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguerez (2010) and the Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe, as well as thematic exhibitions in the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (2006) and the Museo Nacional de Antropología (2004-2005) among others. In 2015 Mazal’s work was included in Frontiers Reimagined at the 56th Venice Biennale. In 2020, the solo exhibition Praga was on view at the Centro Cultural Estación Indianilla in Mexico City. The show comprised new work from his Prague series, which debuted at Sundaram Tagore Chelsea in 2019.
Mazal’s work is included in the permanent collections of The Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez, Zacatecas, Mexico; Maeght Foundation, Paris; Centro de las Artes, Monterrey, Mexico; Cirque du Soleil, Montreal; the Peninsula Hotel, Shanghai; and Deutsche Bank, New York and Germany.

Provenance
Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA
Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline.
After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.
In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York.
Landfield joined the David Whitney...

Grey & Tan Abstract Expressionist Textural Mid-Century Abstract by Peter Witwer
Heavily textured, expressive composition by Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). Over the top of a heavy base layer of plaster, Witwer has added various layers of oil paint, creating a massive amount of depth and texture. Sections of red peek out from underneath various shades of tan, grey, and black. Spots of blue and purple are used sparingly, hidden in the composition.
Presented in a wood frame.
Canvas size: 20"H x 40"W
Frame size: 26.63"H x 46.63"W
Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work.
Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle.

Ricardo Mazal explores themes of life, death, transformation, and regeneration through a multidisciplinary approach to painting that combines photography and digital technology. In 2004 he embarked on a trilogy examining the sacred burial rituals of three cultures, continents, and time periods. He began at the Mayan tomb of The Red Queen in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico; then traveled to the Peace Forest cemetery in Odenwald, Germany; and finally to the sky burials of Mount Kailash in western Tibet. Mazal works from the documentation of his travels, using photography as a bridge that links reality to abstraction.
Mazal has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America, including ten individual museum exhibitions. His work is included in the public collections of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Museo de Moderno in Mexico City, Museo de Arte...
