Richard Beer Landscape Prints

British, b. 1928

Born in London in 1928, just too late to serve in the Second World War, Richard Beer studied between 1945–50 at the UCL Slade School of Fine Art. Subsequently, a French Government scholarship allowed him to spend time in Paris at Atelier 17, working under Stanley William Hayter, one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th Century, he only returned to Paris in 1950. Subsequently, Beer studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Working for John Cranko, choreographer for the Royal Ballet, Beer designed the sets and costumes for his The Lady and the Fool at Covent Garden, subsequently working for him following his move in 1961 to Stuttgart Ballet. Additionally, he produced book illustrations and designed book jackets. Beer taught printmaking at the Chelsea School of Art, where he was a popular teacher. Probably his greatest work was a collaboration with John Betjeman to produce a portfolio of prints of 10 Churches of Sir Christopher Wren in London for Editions Alecto, copies of which are in the Government Art Collection. That collection contains a total of 54 prints by Beer, and the Tate Gallery’s collection holds 7. His Oxford series was also produced for Editions Alecto as was a series of predominantly architectural views in Southern Europe. Most of his prints are of architectural subjects, where he explores the use of color in interesting fashions.

A fine, richly-inked impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Chichicastenango, also known as Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, is a town in the El Quiché department of Guatemala, located in a mountainous region about 140 km northwest of Guatemala City. Chichicastenango is a K'iche' Maya cultural center, with the great majority of the municipality's population indigenous Mayan K'iche. The church depicted is the 400-year-old church Iglesia de Santo Tomás. Built atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, the steps which remain venerated today, originally led to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization. K'iche' Maya priests still use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year. ABOUT THE ARTIST Jesse Floyd Reed (1920-2011) studied art in New York City at the Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students’ League. He held degrees in History and English and completed special advance studies in Asian, African, and Latin American art, history and culture. At the time of his retirement, he was a Professor of the Arts Emeritus at Davis & Elkins College, a position he held for over forty-nine years. A nationally recognized artist since 1947, Professor Reed’s art has been shown in hundreds of museums, libraries, colleges, and universities, including the Boston Museum, National Museum, The Library of Congress, Brooklyn Museum, and Seattle Museum. In his native West Virginia, he is represented in the permanent collections of the Huntington Museum and the Charleston Museum at Sunrise. Ludgate Hill is a street that runs west from St. Paul's Churchyard to Ludgate Circus (built in 1864), and from there becomes Fleet Street. The Ludgate Hill railway station, between Water Lane and New Bridge Street, is a station of the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway. It was closed before World War II and the railway bridge and viaduct between Holborn Viaduct and Blackfriars stations was demolished in 1990 to enable the construction of the City Thameslink railway station in a tunnel. This also involved the regrading of the slope of Ludgate Hill at the junction. About halfway up Ludgate Hill is St Martin, Ludgate church. This was physically joined to the Ludgate.
