“Heroine” by Theophile Francois Somme is a dramatic and richly detailed Art Nouveau sculpture in bronze and chryselephantine created, circa 1920. This exceptional piece has finely carved facial features and wonderful use of patinated bronze to create the sweep of fabric. The statue sits on a carved marble base. Somme was born in Nancy in 1871, lived until 1952 and was a frequent participant in the Parisian Salon des Artistes. Powerful bronze sculpture of an athletic and ripped fighter. This sizable and heavy work of art is as beautiful as the day it was handcrafted. Belgian sculptor Jef Lambeaux (1852-1908) had a penchant for capturing the human physique in motion, with sports and erotic scenes as his favourite subject matters. Since he grew up in the second half of the 19th century, he may very well have seen actual price fighters going at each other in boxing matches. This powerful bronze male boxer in full action is just about to launch an inside right whilst protecting his own head with his left arm and right shoulder. His square jaw line and rugged facial features give us the impression that he is as hard they come. The incredibly well developed muscles in his back and legs confirm that notion as well. The stunning patina accentuates the muscular physique of this bronze fighter and he looks marvelous from all angles. Image 13 shows an interesting detail that you don't find in many bronzes. Here you can see that samples were taken from the bottom of the base to determine whether this bronze had the right composition and strength. It clearly passed the test, because otherwise it would have been destroyed. Headboard with large Brutalist bronze sculpture, model "Aurora" by Frigerio, Italy, 1968. The headboard comprises a large Brutalist sand-cast sculpture, overlaid on an arc of textured lacquered metal, which has a deep gold finish. The piece is in very nice vintage condition. We have left the sculpture unpolished and it has a developed an aged patina, ranging from brown to gold. There are minor losses to the finish of the headboard frame, both the arc and the cross-bars.
