"Andy Warhol A Retrospective" Art Book MOMA First Edition 1989

About the Item

"Andy Warhol A Retrospective" art book first edition from his exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City from February 6th to May 2nd, 1989. The book is in good vintage condition and measures 9.75"W x 11.5"H. #3099 A whopping 480 pages on slick paper profusely illustrated in both color and black & white (460 plates of which 277 are in full color) make this book the definitive edition of the Warhol's entire body of work. A must for any Warhol collector! Forward from Book: "This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition Andy Warhol: A Retrospective, which marks the first full-scale critical examination of this remarkable American artist's career. At a time when we may appropriately begin to assess his contributions to twentieth-century art, this book and exhibition span the wide range of his creativity, from the earliest works of the fifties to works executed just before his untimely death, in February 1987. Through his art, ideas, and style, Andy Warhol left a lasting imprint on the history of modern art and on our culture. We hope that this book and the exhibition it accompanies, will contribute significantly to understanding his vision and originality, his influence and legacy."... Richard E. Oldenburg, Director, The Museum of Modern Art. Exhibition: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, February 6-May 2, 1989 Publication of this book: Publication was supported by a grant to The Museum of Modern Art from an anonymous donor. Publisher: The Museum of Modern Art, New York Published: February, 1989 Printed and bound: Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey Binding: Hard-cover, perfect-bound Dust-Jacket: Acetate jacket with black print and copy Designed by: Steven Schoenfelder. "There will always be a pre- and a post-Warhol," writes Philippe Tretiack, "and that post-Warhol period is having difficulty establishing itself." There also will always be people who consider Andy Warhol's work to represent the beginning of the end of serious cultural life in America. A flagrantly commercial antihero of the gay, big-city subculture, Warhol offended in so many ways. His cheerful, absurdist pop images of Campbell's soup cans, Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and the electric chair made serious subject matter with serious meaning a thing of the past. Everything Warhol did made serious film, painting, drawing, or printmaking look slightly silly. He flaunted his disregard for the pretensions of the fine artist, calling his studio "the Factory," churning out multiples, and publicly insisting that his work could be fabricated by practically anyone.

  • "Surf Culture" First Edition Book "Surf" Signed by Author John Severson
    By John Severson Productions
    Located in San Diego, CA
A very nice "Surf Culture" first edition of the book "Surf" signed by author, surf industry pioneer and "Surfer Magazine" founder John Severson at the California Surf Museum in Huntington Beach, CA, circa 2014. The book is in great condition with vibrant colors and measures 9.75"W x 12.5"H; it includes the original dust jacket and signed "Cowabunga John Severson" in black marker on the inside title page A "must have" for any surf memorabilia collector! #3177 The book "Surf" came out in 2014 and was characterized by the New York Times as follows: "John Severson's Surf" is a book that presents the languid-meets-extreme-thrills lifestyle of surfing through paintings and vivid photography. Presented mainly through Mr. Severson's paintings and photography, the book serves a dual purpose as a celebration of a Zeilg-like life to envy and as an implicit slap across the cheek of those status-conscious, white-collar elements that are getting ever fresher in their advances upon the wave-riding lifestyle that he helped start back in the 1950's. (Jim Rutenberg The New York Times, Styles Section) #2492 About the artist: John Severson, well known as the creator of the internationally acclaimed SURFER Magazine, grew up surfing off the beaches of Southern California. He began his career as a painter, selling his first works while finishing his Master’s Degree at Long Beach State College. In the ’50s he became the first person to create a large body of art relating to the Hawaii-California surf culture. Since then he has provided a steady output of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. In 1958, John used his art, photography, and surfing passion to create a popular surf movie series. His films included SURF SAFARI, SURF FEVER, BIG WEDNESDAY, and PACIFIC VIBRATIONS. Severson's smash hits posters from the ’50s and ’60s, remain collector favorites. As a surfer, Severson was known for riding big waves, and for his innovative performance style in big surf. In 1961, he won the Peru International Surfing Championships and was a finalist in the U.S. and Hawaiian Championships. With the founding of SURFER, John’s art focused on the magazine and graphics. His painting “Surf Bebop” was selected as the outstanding cover painting of 1963 by Communication Arts. Surfer During the ’60s, he authored two surf books...

  • Steve Schapiro, Andy Warhol & Friends, Signed, Limited Edition Book
By Andy Warhol, Steve Schapiro, TASCHEN
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Pop Life. Pictures of Andy Warhol by Steve Schapiro. In 1965, Steve Schapiro started documenting Andy Warhol for Life magazine: Warhol was cementing a reputation as an important Pop artist who drew his inspiration from popular culture and commercial objects. With his sunglasses, blond wig, and bland public utterances, Warhol was enigmatic, charismatic, intensely ambitious, and aware that to become a star, you needed the presence of people to document your ascent. Schapiro, also ambitious and hardworking, who in his own words “kept quiet and smiled a lot,” was an ideal witness to Warhol’s relentless rise from cult New York artist to 20th-century icon. Ironically, Life never published the story, so many of these images are seen here for the first time, scanned from negatives found deep in Schapiro’s archive. Between 1965 and 1966, Warhol was at his creative peak. In this period, Warhol turned his life into art and conceived the “Andy Warhol persona”—arguably his greatest masterpiece. Schapiro busily photographed Warhol...
