Low Country (South Carolina)
By Elizabeth Verner
Located in Middletown, NY
An enchanting Southern landscape by the mother of the Charleston Renaissance. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, and educated under the tutelage of Thomas Anshutz at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, O'Neill Verner was a teacher, a mother, an artist, an ardent preservationist, and a skilled autodidact. Having previously focused on painting, in the early 1920s she found herself deeply moved by printmaking as a media, and especially so by the simple, peaceful themes and tableaus she discovered in Japanese art. She embarked on a effort to teach herself Japanese printmaking techniques, and in the process, produced the charming images of every day life in Charleston and its environs that earned her recognition as a cultural icon in her day, and in more modern times, as the mother of the Charleston Renaissance, which flourished well into the 1930s. In 1923 she opened a studio in Charleston where she focused on documenting the local color and the architecture and landscape that distinguishes Charleston as one of the South's most beautiful cities, all the while applying the gentle and poetic thematic sensibilities of Japanese printmaking. O'Neill Verner soon found herself in high demand when municipalities and institutions throughout the country sought commissions from her to document the beauty of their grounds and historic buildings. She worked as far north as the campuses of Harvard and Princeton, and extensively across the South, including in Savannah, Georgia, where through sweeping commissions she was able to marry her love of southern preservation and art. O'Neill Verner was a lifelong learner, and continued a path of edification that led her to study etching at the Central School of Art in London, to travel extensively through Europe, and to visit Japan in 1937, where she studied sumi (brush and ink) painting. She was a founding member of the Charleston Etchers Club, and the Southern States Art League. Her works are represented in the permanent collections of leading museums across the American south, and in major national institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston's Museum of Fine Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It should be in the finest condition original available. Explore The United States Army Air Service was the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army between 1918 and 1926 1. It was established as an independent but temporary branch of the U.S. War Department during World War I by two executive orders of President Woodrow Wilson: on May 24, 1918, replacing the Aviation Section, Signal Corps as the nation’s Air Force, and March 19, 1919, establishing a military Director of Air Service to control all aviation activities. Its life was extended for another year in July 1919, during which time Congress passed the legislation necessary to make it a permanent establishment. The National Defense Act of 1920 assigned the Air Service the status of “combatant arm of the line” of the United States Army with a major general in command. Charles Livingston Bull (1874-1932) was an American illustrator known for his illustrations of wildlife. Bull studied taxidermy in Rochester, New York, and his first job at the age of 16 was preparing animals for mounting at the Ward’s Museum in Rochester, New York. This Way Out, colorful graphic amusement park with text
By Philomena Marano
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Silkscreen Edition of 125 + 1AP Philomena Marano has spent decades “penetrat[ing] the soul of Coney Island to reveal its twin promises of candy-colored paradise and garishly ornate nightmare,” as Ann Aptaker describes, through the prints and cut-paper collage in her “American Dream-land” series (1979-). These colorful, graphic style works evoke the energy and amusement of Coney Island through depictions of the rides, the boardwalk, clowns, and food vendors. Many are large-scale papier collé installations, a technique Marano learned from Robert Indiana in whose studio she formerly assisted. In conjunction with “American Dream Land,” in 1981 Marano and Richard Eagan co-founded the Coney Island Hysterical Society, which undertakes projects such as restoring old rides in response to the alarming rate at which they were shutting down in the fabled amusement park of their childhood. Ms. Marano is a daughter of Brooklyn. She holds a BFA from Pratt Institute, is an intimate of the visual poetry of Coney Island, created the winning poster for the first Spirit of Brooklyn poster...

Clear Creek Canyon I (Vintage 1933 Colorado Mountain Landscape, Black & White)
By Ross Eugene Braught
Located in Denver, CO
Clear Creek Canyon I, black and white modernist landscape of Colorado mountains is an original vintage 1933 signed lithograph by Ross Braught (1898-1983). Presented in a custom frame with all archival materials and UV protectant/anti glare glass, outer dimensions measure 26 ¼ x 31 ½ x 1 ½ inches. Image size is 16 x 23 inches. Painter, lithographer and draftsman, Ross Eugene Braught was called "the greatest living American draftsman" during his lifetime by his friend and colleague, Thomas Hart Benton. The son of an artist who had acquired some formal training in Baltimore and enjoyed a short-lived art career in Carlisle, Pennsylania, Braught graduated Carlisle High School where his early drawings of trees anticipated his mature, professional talent. He went on to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, studying with Joseph T. Pearson, Jr., and with Daniel Garber, American Impressionist landscape painter and member of the art colony at New Hope, Pennsylvania. Garber's influence can be seen in Braught's painting, Landscape near Upper Black Eddy (1921). In 1921 the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts awarded Braught its prestigious William Emlem Cresson Memorial Traveling Scholarship, allowing him to travel, study and paint for two years in England, France and Italy. Two extant paintings from that trip are his Brittany Village (1922) and an Italian Landscape (1923). Following his return to the United States he married Eugenia Osenton, and the couple lived for five years in Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania, a secluded place of peace and beauty on the Delaware River north of Philadelphia. During that time he participated in exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, as well at the National Academy of Design and the Society of Independent Artists in New York. In 1925 he had his first one-man show at New York's Dudensing Gallery. He also showed in the 1920s with the Mystic Art Association in Connecticut and painted in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He and his wife moved in 1928 to Woodstock, New York, where he became a member of the local art colony. Both of them had prior connections with some of its resident artists - his wife from Robert Henri's circle at the Art Students League and both of them from Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's popular sketch club in New York which they had attended. In Woodstock Braught developed his interest in lithography through his association with lithographer Grant Arnold. Arnold also ran a press in the basement of the Woodstock Arts Association printing editions for Yasuo Kuniyoshi, John Carroll and Karl Fortress, among others. Braught did several excellent lithographs in Woodstock -- Kingston: Ten Miles, End of the Cape, Road Grader...
