'White Diamond Dust' by Hunt Slonem, 2022. Oil and acrylic with diamond dust on canvas, 36 x 48 in. This painting features Slonem's signature bunnies outlined in black over a white, diamond dusted background. Considered one of the great colorists of his time, Slonem’s neo-expressionist paintings feature an exuberant and bold, fauvist palette to emphasize his beloved menagerie of animals. Born in Kittery, Maine in 1951, Hunt Slonem graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Painting and Art History from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Slonem later attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, where he was exposed to influential artists from the New York area including Alex Katz, Alice Neel, Richard Estes, Jack Levine, Louise Nevelson and Al Held. This exposure played a pivotal role in Slonem’s artistic career, as it aided in his decision to move to New York in 1973. Since 1977, Slonem has had over 250 solo exhibitions at prestigious galleries. Museums, both domestic and international, have collected his work, among them Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney, the Miro Foundation, and the New Orleans Museum of Art. My Companion is a painting that highlights the relationship that existed between human and their pet, especially dogs. The untold loyalty, devotion, love, intimacy, and friendliness are very evident in this painting. The love which humans cannot get from fellow humans is being received by animals. My Companion shows that it is not gainsaying that humans receive succor from animals from time immemorial. The dog is seen imitating the lady by holding a flower just like the lady does. The icons and motifs generated from peacock feathers are weaved around the lady to reflect the elegance, pride, and independent status of the subject. "Uscita" takes Inspiration from ancient Italian frescos originally found at the Villa di Livia outside of Rome. The trompe l'oeil frescos were from a subterranean room used for dining. The lush gardens gave the dinner guests the illusion of dining alfresco. Here Pylant took particular notice of the flora and fauna painted over 2000 years ago only to discover they were species that were also present at her then North Carolina studio. The artist adds an architectural element to the gardenscape to suggest a portal from the past into the present. This exploration of the ancient world and its connection to the present is a central theme running through Pylant's work. Carol S.
