Expanding on the legacies of artists such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, Shepard Fairey’s practice disrupts the distinction between fine and commercial art.
A major artist of the street art movement, Fairey rose to prominence in the early 1990s through the dispersion of prints, posters, stickers and murals, related to his Obey Giant campaign, which yielded an international cultural phenomenon. Fairey’s iconic poster of President Barack Obama was adopted as the official emblem associated with the presidential campaign and encapsulates a number of recurring concerns in the artist’s work, including propaganda, portraiture and political power.

Unfortunately, the topic remains in need of urgent action! In addition to referencing a great Rolling Stones song, Paint it Black is about oil dictating too much of our energy and foreign policy. Imagine if all the money spent on wars and strategic interests in the Middle East went to developing green energy alternatives. Instead, our government subsidizes the highly profitable oil and gas industries for $40 billion annually because no politician wants the blame for rising gas prices. Newsflash: we are still paying more for gas, whether it's at the pump or through our taxes. The need for gas will remain, but we must invest in sustainable energy alternatives as we transition off the finite supply of fossil fuels that are also terrible for CO2 emissions. "Shepard Fairey"

"Rise to Rewrite the Law" is a silkscreen offset on speckle tone paper that is the second in Shepard Fairey's crowdfunded WE THE FUTURE series. This work features Amanda Nguyen, the Vietnamese-American founder of the civil rights NGO Rise and drafter of the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act. As part of the WE THE FUTURE campaign her portrait was sent to twenty thousand schools in the United States to teach students about activism. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner, and is unnumbered open edition work.
Shepard Fairey is one of America's most well-known living artists. Born Frank Shepard Fairey in Charleston in 1970, Fairey came into prominence as a street artist and graphic designer whose works such as "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" and the Barack Obama "Hope" poster have become iconic within contemporary culture. He began his art career with doing pieces for skateboards and T-shirts before getting an education at the Rhode Island School of Design where he earned his BA in Illustration.
