Tom Ford for Gucci

No one understands sex appeal quite like Tom Ford, who joined Gucci as a womens-wear designer in 1990.

At the time, the internationally renowned Italian label was better known for leather goods than luxury fashion. It was also nearly bankrupt. After creative director Dawn Mello left in 1994, following a Bahrain-based investment group becoming Gucci’s majority shareholder, Ford was named creative director. The American designer soon infused the brand with a fresh sensuality and bold style.

Ford's potent vision of sexed-up femininity spanned everything from shirts to shoes to handbags and other accessories at Gucci — he reimagined the house's iconic double-ring-and-bar Horsebit hardware, a reference to the brand’s equestrian history, as a seductive low-slung belt, worn by Madonna when accepting an MTV video music award in 1995. For his fall show during that year, in which Kate Moss walked down the runway in an unbuttoned satin shirt, velvet hip-huggers and tousled hair, heralded an exciting, glammed-up era for the once fusty brand. Vogue critic Sarah Mower called it “one of those hitting-in-the-solar-plexus moments.”

As Ford shot to fame, he continued to explore plunging necklines, such as in the black and white looks of the Fall 1996 collection, and sumptuous fabrics like leather and tweed, with the Fall 2000 ready-to-wear collection ranging from sultry silk evening dresses to plush belted coats.

Ford also cranked up the seduction in the provocative ads for Gucci, particularly with regard to campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, which the fashion house acquired in 1999 (Ford was also named creative director for YSL and designed the brand’s ready-to-wear collection). Gucci's Fall/Winter 1997 campaign featured Carolyn Murphy grasping Angela Lindvall in what looked like a video still; in another shot, a face pressed against a foot in a lipstick-red heel. Each promoted a vision of modern fashion where women were sexually confident, the materials were luxurious and the styles were fearless.

In 2004, Ford and Gucci president Domenico De Sole left the company after failing to agree on the renewal of their contracts. In 2006, with De Sole as chairman, Ford launched his wildly successful eponymous menswear label. Today Ford is also an author, film director and chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

S/S 1999 Gucci by Tom Ford Madonna Runway Lucky Rhinestone Museum Pants Y2K
By Tom Ford for Gucci, Gucci
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Presenting an unbelievable pair of rhinestone embellished lavender wool pants from Tom Ford's famous 'Las Vegas hippy' collection with Gucci. Most famously worn by Madonna to the 1999 Grammys, where she opened the show and left with four awards, and by Mariah Carey in a 1999 photoshoot. The Spring/Summer 1999 collection is remembered for its drastic departure from Tom Ford's signature sleek minimalism. Ford wanted a challenge after the success of his earlier collections for Gucci. Colorful, exaggerated floral prints and heavy beading served as an exercise in maximalism that stayed true to Gucci's design staples and Ford's reputation for selling sexy. These pants debuted as look number 33 on Danielle Zinaich and in the ad campaign on Jacquetta Wheeler, shot by Mario Testino—part of the iconic Absolut Gucci ad campaign produced by Tom Ford and Absolut Vodka. Testino also shot this campaign in a foam-filled Paris club...

Questions About Tom Ford for Gucci
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 15, 2024
To tell if a Gucci dress is real, examine its neck label closely. You can compare the label to images taken of authentic pieces and shared on trusted online resources, looking for any discrepancies in the font, logo, text size and color. The stitching that holds the label in place should also be even and secure. If the tag is misaligned, loose or hastily stitched, your dress may be a replica. The same applies to the seams along the hemline and other dress areas. Authentic Gucci dresses will be free of imperfections, which may be present on counterfeits. If you'd like an expert opinion, a certified appraiser or experienced authenticator can assist you. Explore a variety of Gucci dresses on 1stDibs.

No, Tom Ford does not currently make Gucci. However, the American fashion designer did design for Gucci in the past. He served as the creative director for the Italian luxury fashion house from 1994 to 2004, and many credit him for reviving the company, which struggled financially during the 1980s. On 1stDibs, explore a diverse assortment of Gucci apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2024
Yes, Tom Ford used to be with Gucci. He took over as creative director of the Italian fashion house in 1994. During his 10-year tenure, Ford revived the brand, which had faced financial difficulties during the 1980s and ’90s. His potent vision of sexed-up femininity was wildly successful. Ford’s racy ads, shot by photographers such as Mario Testino, stirred controversy, bringing Gucci back into the spotlight. Shop a diverse assortment of Gucci apparel, bags and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 6, 2024
What happened between Tom Ford and Gucci may never be completely known by the public. When Ford and Gucci president Domenico De Sole left the company after failing to agree on the renewal of their contracts in 2004, insiders reported that their exits were due to money. Simply put, Ford and De Sole may have wanted more money than the Italian fashion house was willing to pay. However, years later, Ford said that his departure had nothing to do with his pay and instead occurred because he wanted full creative control and was unable to obtain it. Find a diverse assortment of vintage Tom Ford Gucci apparel and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 15, 2024
Yes, Gucci is really luxury. Gucci is an internationally renowned luxury house with an iconic logo and a rich heritage that dates back to its founding in Florence, Italy, by designer Guccio Gucci in 1921. Today, vintage Gucci clothing, handbags and shoes are among high fashion's most covetable goods, and its contemporary pieces are favorites among trendsetters like Harry Styles, Beyonce, Rihanna and Jared Leto. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of Gucci apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 13, 2024

At Gucci, Tom Ford served as the creative director from 1994 to 2004. He infused the brand with fresh sensuality and a bold style. His fall 1995 show, in which Kate Moss walked down the runway in an unbuttoned satin shirt, velvet hip-huggers and tousled hair, heralded an exciting, glammed-up era for the brand. As Ford shot to fame, he continued to explore plunging necklines, such as in the black and white looks of the Fall 1996 collection, and sumptuous fabrics like leather and tweed. The Fall 2000 ready-to-wear collection ranged from sultry silk evening dresses to plush belted coats. He also cranked up the seduction in the provocative ads for the fashion house.
