An interesting and rare Chinese bowl with silver decoration applied to a heavy-gauge copper bowl. The applied silver motifs represent the four seasons, prunus, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum, being Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. There are also three circular medallions with Chinese characters which read Hua, blossom (or flowers) and Ji Xiang, auspicious.
The mark on the base shows that it was made by Hou Xiang who was an artisan working in Shanghai, and that the bowl was retailed by the well known Chinese firm of Wang Hing.
Silver and copper items were beginning to be made in the U.S. circa 1880 by Gorham and Tiffany amongst others, and this Chinese bowl seems to be a very rare Chinese...
