Nerone and Patuzzi 'Elemento Luminose', 1970, Signed, Published, Original Label
By Nerone and Patuzzi
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Beautiful 'elemento luminose' , illuminated wall sculpture designed by the renowned italian sculptors Nerone Ceccarelli & Giovanni Patuzzi (Gruppo NP2) for the gallery 'Forme and Superfici'. Turin,Italy in 1970. The panel has the engraved signature of both Nerone and Patuzzi and still bears the original 'forme and superfici' paper label to the rear of the panel. This sculpture is published in an original 'Forme e Superfici catalog' and the January 1971 issue of the renowned italian design periodical 'Interni-La rivista dell Arredamento'. Please see Literature section below for full reference. The central disc features a beautiful abstract hand crafted sculptural relief motif on metal , probably zinc, which is illuminated by a hidden fluorescent tube light. The frame surrounding the central sculptural disc is finished in stove enameled steel over a wood structure and features copper detailing. One of Nerone and Patuzzi's best known works is the enormous , 150 square metre, bas relief in zinc that they created in 1972 for the 'hemicycle' of the then new 'Schulman' building (1973) in Luxembourg which housed the early meetings of the European Parliament . The hemicycle was beautifully decorated following a project by the architect Simonis, combining different materials (leather, wood, metal) in a geometrical harmony, the whole integrated by Nerone and Patuzzi's huge zinc bas-relief on the rear wall. PLEASE SEE IMAGE 9. The zinc models were engraved using an etching technique, representing geometrical and abstract figures, and mounted on a surface of 150 square metres. The bas-relief was considered at the time to be the biggest sculpture in metal of the world. LITERATURE: Original 'Forme e superficie' catalog, confirms name as 'Elemto luminose' model ref C3 104 LZ', 'INTERNI , LA RIVISTA DELL ARREDAMENTO' January 1971, page 18, PLEASE SEE IMAGE 8. BIOGRAPHY In 1962 Nerone and Patuzzi founded the 'Gruppo NP2', an acronym that includes the initials of Nerone and Giancarlo Patuzzi: together with other artists "they experiment with new sources of poetic expression from the materials". = The aim of the group is to promote the integration of art in architecture together with other professionals, including Luigi Marchisotti, Dedalo Montali...

Seating as Minimalist Sculpture, 4 Elements by Uredat, 1969, Mohair Upholstery
By Klaus Uredat, COR
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Amazing, museum quality, modular 'CORBI' seating set, composed of four elements, designed by Klaus Uredat for 'COR', Germany, 1969 complete with the original purchase invoice dated 1972. After receiving many requests to do so, we have carefully unpicked and removed the original custom order pop art upholstery and have now recovered the set in a more neutral, high quality mohair upholstery. A rare, beautiful and highly sculptural pure elemental design, the large dimensions of each .Corbi' seating element allow for them to be used equally as either individual lounge chairs or as a modular sofa. This particular set is a must for serious collectors, this set comes complete with the original German purchase invoice from 1972, which also confirms the additional expense of the custom order upholstery, we have carefully unpicked and kept the original upholstery fabric should the buyer wish to retain it for provenance (please see photos 14 and 15 which illustrate the set with it's original upholstery). The sculptural 'Corbi' modular lounge chair was designed in 1969 and only remained in limited scale production for a few years up to circa 1974. Today this super elegant design is both very popular and now extremely difficult to find due to the passage of time and the limited total production numbers so a large set of elements such as this, is really a rare opportunity. Each 'Corbi' element is composed of two independent Minimalist sculptural forms, one base element and one cylindrical seat back. With the base elements positioned end to end, day beds may...

Pierre Jeanneret 'Senat' Chair Designed for Chandigarh's High Court, 1959-60
By Pierre Jeanneret
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Authentic original unrestored Pierre Jeanneret 'Senat' chair finished in beautifully grained Teak wood with old damaged leatherette upholstery. The 'Senat' chairs were primarily designed for the high court of Chandigarh although they were also used in smaller numbers among some of the other administrative buildings contained within Chandigarh. This is a nice, honest and structurally sound authentic example, ripe for restoration. Jeanneret employed local artisans to hand fabricate these chairs and several variations of the 'Senat' chair were produced with model designations 'A',' B', ''C' etc. This is the harder to find 91cm tall (35.83 inches) high back model, we found examples of the same high back model for sale at the exclusive ' Galerie Patrrick Seguin' in Paris, a world renowned Jeanneret specialist, and we bow to his detailed knowledge, Seguin dates this particular model/construction to 1959-60. Please refer to image 2 to compare. Although the current leatherette upholstery is clearly very old we have been able to determine that this chair had actually been reupholstered once before during it's lifetime. The very old and original type of early latex foam , left in place from the original upholstery, is still clearly visible attached to the chair's wood structure, you can see that when this chair was reupholstered in the current black leatherette the upholsterer just placed a layer of a more modern darker tone foam straight on top of the original latex foam. Please refer to image 4. Given the plethora of Jeanneret knock offs or modern copies offered on the market we have decided to leave this genuine mid century example in completely original unrestored condition so prospective clients can be be sure of the mid century authenticity and provenance of this example. The chair clearly needs to be completely reupholstered, it's teal wood frame has some surface blemishes commensurate with age and use and is still structurally strong and sound . We are happy to undertake the reupholstery for you should you wish. Please reach out for estimates of the cost to reupholster the chair for you. According to Chandigarh heritage there were two phases in Chandigarh’s furniture...

Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Extremely rare pair of signed Willy Rizzo lounge chairs finished in suede with stainless steel bases. These are very early examples which were produced by the 'Studio Willy Rizzo' in Rome in 1969, recognised by the Willy Rizzo signature in the fabric. Original Signed early period Willy Rizzo lounge chairs are very rare, 95% of the output of this design were produced as either two, three or four-seat sofas and the individual lounge chairs are very rarely seen on the market today. This iconic design featured prominently in the prestigious Italian design periodical 'Casa Vogue' throughout the early to mid-1970s including a feature on Rizzo ad Elsa Martinelli's own home in St Tropez, France in the October 1974 issue which illustrates this design. Please see image 4. These rare chairs have had their upholstery completely renovated including new seat support strapping, new foam and suede upholstery to the original specifications. The Willy Rizzo signatures from the original upholstery have been carefully cut from the original worn fabric and sown to the underside of each chair to maintain the authenticity. Photos of the restoration process are available on request. Please see image 10 as an example. Pair of Karel Appel Curtains, 1963, Documented at Stedelijk Musem
By Karel Appel
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Super rare and impressive pair of large cotton ''gordijnstof' curtains, designed in 1963 by world renowned Dutch painter and sculptor Karel Appel (1921-2006) for the textile company Hermann Hartman & Co of Amsterdam. This extremely rare, original repeat print textile is documented in the Stedelijk museum's textile collection under object nubmer KNA 1998, please see image 2. Each curtain measures 56.7" X 83.85" (144cm X 213cm). 'Gordijnstof' translates as "curtain fabric" confirming that this textile was originally designed by Appel specifically for use as curtains however being of such an impressive dimension these examples could equally be used as wall hangings ,as photographed, or mounted on both sides of a screen or mounted and framed as an art work in its own right , a practice which is becoming increasingly commonplace as high end textile designs by important artists are becoming increasingly valued , appreciated and sought after in the marketplace. Appel's paintings and sculptures can be found in the collections of some of the world's most prominent museums including the Museum of Modern art in New York and Tate Modern ,London. Each curtain is of a very impressive scale with each measuring 56.7 " (144 cm) X 83.85" (213cm). The curtains are signed on the banding KUNSTENAAR DESSIN ONTWERP Karel Appel, HARTMAN PRINT, AMSTERDAM. Another of Appel's designs for Hermann Hartman,Amsterdam can be found in the collection of the national textile museum in Holland. Please see image 9. Even a small sample of this 1963 textile in good condition would be hard to find today but to find two large scale Appel curtains intact and in beautiful unfaded condition with no staining or fraying must be next to unique today. This is a very rare find and certainly a unique opportunity. Image 10 shows Karel Appel in his atelier in New York in 1966. Provenance: These curtains come from the private collection of a retired Professor from Oxford,UK. Biography: Karel Appel was an Expressionist Dutch painter. He was a member of the famous Cobra, the European group of the late 1940s to early 1950s, which promoted spontaneous expressionism and abstract features in painting. Appel's paintings incorporate applications of vibrant, violent colors often possessing a primal, childlike quality or a schizophrenic innocence. Later in life, Appel turned to creating figurative sculptures. Examples of his work can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, and other collections. Expressionist painter Karel Appel made a name for himself in the world of painting by creating a majestic collection of highly distinguishable work for which he became internationally renowned. From the start, art curators could not ignore Appel's work, which has been exhibited at major museums around the world, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Manhattan-based Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Tate Gallery in London. Though Appel is widely recognized as one of the best-known Dutch Expressionist painters of all time, he was also a passionate printmaker, sculptor, and ceramicist. Karel Appel’s childhood and early life Christiaan Karel Appel was born on April 25, 1921, in his parents’ house at 7 Dapperstraat, Amsterdam. His father, Jan Appel, owned a barbershop. His mother, born Johanna Chevalier, was a descendant of French Huguenots. Karel Appel had three brothers. He studied art from 1940 to 1943 at the Rejksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts during the German occupation and befriended young painter Corneille and, some years later, Constant. His parents opposed his choice to become an artist, leading him to leave home. This was also necessary to hide himself from the German police so that he would not be picked up and sent to Germany to work in the weapon industry. Appel produced his first real painting on canvas, which was a still life of a fruit basket at the age of fourteen. On his fifteenth birthday, his wealthy uncle Karel Chevalier gave him a paint set and an easel and some lessons on painting. Career. In 1946, his first solo show was held in Groningen, Netherlands. He also participated in the Jonge Schilders exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam nd created a buzz in the art world, as it generated a huge scandal and many objections in the press and public. About this time, Appel was influenced first by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, then by the French brute-art artist Jean Dubuffet. In 1947, he started sculpting with various used materials and painted them in bright colors such as white, red, yellow, blue and black. Karel Appel became the member of Nederlandse Experimentele Group in Holland along with the young Dutch painters Anton Rooskens...

Rare Sculptual Form 'MBR 03' Coffee Table by Michel Boyer for Rouve, Paris, 1968
By Michel Boyer, Rouve
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Beautiful minimalist sculptural form ' MBR 03' coffee table designed in 1968 by French master designer Michel Boyer for Rouve, Paris. Michel Boyer designed a small series of 'MBR' white laminate tables with varying overall dimensions and proportions of inset storage compartments but all based on the same theme. These tables were produced in small numbers in 1968 by the high end Avant Garde manuacturer Rouve who were based in Rue Bonaparte in Paris. Please see copy of original Rouve advert (image 2) which documents this exact model, the 'MBR 03'. The table is high quality and extremely heavy for its dimensions, finished in elegant white laminate with elegant detailing such as the rounded corners and inset storage compartments, for bottles, plants, magazines etc which add greatly to the overall sculptural form. The white minimalist form is supported on a hardwood plinth and clearly shows influences from the 'Groupe de Recherche d'art Visuel' artists based in Paris who were creating experimental works in both kinetic and op art during the same period as well as the scene eminating out of the 'Galerie Rene Denise' who were exhibiting these key 1960s artworks  One of Michel Boyer's most famous interior design projects was for the interior of the Rothschild bank in Paris in 1970, please see image 6, where he installed a number of his white laminate 'MBR' tables alongside a series of dramatic wall hung 'Espaces chromatiques carrés' kinetic cubic light sculptures by the artist Gregorio Vardanega...

Pair of Raoul Guys 'Antony', Chairs Designed for Cite University, Paris , 1954
By Raoul Guys
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Rare and important pair of Raoul Guys 'Antony' chairs designed in 1954 for the world famous 'Cite' university's 'Jean Zay / Antony' residence 'in Paris . This stunning design was produced concurrently by 'Airborne' in France and 'Trefac' in Belgium (on official license) ' Beautiful sculptural form design with enameled steel rod frame and thermoformed plywood seat and backrests .both chairs are finished in their original faux leather fabric. A rare opportunity to acquire a pair complete with original upholstery, We can recover the chairs should we receive a request to do so. This pair were produced by 'Trefac' in Belgium , we found a 'Trefac' manufacturer's catalog dated 1957 which illustrates this model (please see image 6). 'Trefac' produced these chairs for the Belgian market under license from 'Airborne',France. The 'Jean Zay/ Antony' university residence was designed by the French architect Eugene Beaudoin and built in 1954. The interior furniture and lighting for the “Antony” residence was designed by the most influential of the group of “new” French designers , key figures such as Jean Prouve , Charlotte Perriand and Serge Mouille . Several of the chairs chosen for the ”Antony” building in Paris were designed by Raoul Guys including this design and his famous sculptural form wicker and steel lounge chair, please refer to images 2 and 3. These chairs were commissioned by the French government ,through the guidance of master French Sculptor and archtect , Andre Bloc, who greatly admired Guys' sculptural yet practical designs. Bloc was also involved in selecting furniture for the 'Cite' university's 'Maison Bresil' and 'Maison Mexique' university buildings in 1953 again furnished with designs by Jean Prouve , Charlotte Perriand and Serge Mouille among others. Bloc also advised 'Air France' to select Guys' 'oro' series of designs finished in bent steel and wicker for use in their 48 airports across the African continent ,they were famously used in the 'Brazzaville' complex of hotels and the Hotel N'Gor in Dakar again alongside furniture designed by Jean Prouve and Charlotte Perriand again selected by Andre Bloc. Please refer to the the last two images where you can see our collection of chairs that Raoul Guys designed for the 'Anthony' building in Paris and Air France's 'Brazzaville' complex and HotelT N'Gor in Dakar . Charles Bernard founded his company 'Airborne' in order to bring modern design to the population of France. Bernard asked his close friend and famous sculptor and architect Andre Bloc to seek out talented young designers who could produce furniture with an artistic or sculptural quality. Bloc was already working in this field with the “group espace” who saw art and sculpture as a social phenomena and aimed to bring art into the everyday living experience . For example it was Bloc who commissioned Charlotte Perriand to produce the famous 'Mexico' and 'Tunisie' bookcases for the Cité Internationale Universitaire , Paris for which Bloc also produced the colour scheme and he also worked closely with the Steph Simon gallery in Paris famous for showcasing the work of Prouve,Perriand and Noguchi among others. . Bloc had at this time recently come across a young designer Raoul Guys who’s work he greatly admired and which offered a sculptural quality to furniture design and asked him if he would like to collaborate with Airborne . In the book “les decorateurs des Annees 50” by Patrick Favardin it mentions that Andre Bloc presented Raoul Guys as a very interesting creator. Guy’s chairs had a suprising and sculptural quality in the free spirit of the after war period. LITERATURE: 'Airborne i945-75' ,page 35...

Iconic Super Rare Original Edition 'Libro' Chair by Gruppo Dam, Busnelli, 1970
By G14, Gruppo DAM (Designer Associati Milano), Busnelli
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Amazing and super rare original edition of the iconic ,radical 'libro' chair designed in 1970 by Gruppo DAM (Designer Associati Milano) in collaboration with the avant garde design group 'Gruppo G14' . Dimensions, please note the seating height, height and length of this chair is variable depending on how the seating leaves and enameled steel frame are arranged, only the width of the seat is fixed. The dimensions quoted are only one of the many possible and are for the seating elements as arranged in the last photo. The 'Libro'—meaning “book” in Italian—takes its form quite literally. Ten thin wedges are stacked on each other, hinged at the apex of an articulated enameled steel frame. What unfolds is an object with a childlike sense of discovery, offering an extraordinary range of seating positions depending on the flipping of each “page” along the spine. It demonstrates the re-envisioning of industrial design into a subversive lifestyle tool. And for a chair that cleanly falls into Italy’s postwar radical design movement of the late 1960s and early ’70s, it’s surprisingly functional—as practical as it is playfully outlandish. Undoubtedly, its originality, its simplicity, its ease of use, and its versatility make this sculpture-like armchair attractive to lovers of beauty and collectors interested in the conception and cultural process of design. Chairs from the original edition , finished in shiny vinyl, were originally produced in tiny numbers by 'Busnelli', as you can imagine at the time this design was considered too avant-garde and conceptual for the taste of the mass market. This example suffers from the same fate as per 95% of the original edition chairs in that the type of vinyl used proved to be particularly sensitive to UV light so over the passing years the surface layer of the vinyl upholstery has cracked significantly , some may see this as a flaw but it proves the originality of this museum piece and the chances of today finding an original edition chair without this vinyl surface cracking are effectively and unfortunately next to none. Today these extremely rare and early iconic examples of italian radical...
