(German 1813-1886) was a genre painter. He was the son of master baker Johann Georg Meyer. His mother was strictly religious. From 1833 he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts , which was led since 1826 by Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow, the son of the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow. In addition to Schadow, Karl Ferdinand Son was his teacher there. Meyer acquired the necessary craftsmanship skills to make a living from the sale of his paintings, but he was initially unable to do so. From 1841 to 1852 he maintained his own studio in Düsseldorf. On his travels to Brussels and Antwerp Meyer experienced the works of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthonis van Dyck. In 1851 he married the singer Julia Beer...

Twilight in the Hills
By William Louis Sonntag Sr. 1
Located in Wiscasett, ME
A luminous Autumn oil on canvas board landscape, probably of the hills in the Hudson River Valley, by the noted American artist William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900). Signed in the lower right. Sonntag was born near Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Cincinnati, OH in the 1840’s to study art. He studied for a brief time with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Art and his idealized paintings of American wilderness and visionary paintings of imagined European ruins were commercially successful. He traveled twice to Europe in the 1850’s to improve his skills, eventually settling in New York City. He joined the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited his works for forty years. His mature works identify him with the Hudson River School of landscape painters. A romantic and naturalistic painter of his surroundings, Sonntag also created idealized paintings of Roman ruins, recalling his European trips of earlier years. Sonntag was an Associate (1860) and Academician (1861) at the National Academy of Design, and a member of the American Watercolor Society, Artists Fund Society, and the American Art Union...

Oil on artist board, signed Emily Hoffmeier lower left Most likely a scene of Nantucket harbor and presented in what could be the original frame with a slightly highlighted silver finish. Presents well overall measuring 16.5" x 20.5" including the frame.
From 1929 to her death in 1952, Emily Hoffmeier (1888-1952) spent summers on Nantucket, painting in the waterfront studios—first Harborview No. 3 and later moving to the Red Anchor Studio on Washington Street. She exhibited in the Easy Street Gallery, the Candle House Studio, and later at the Kenneth Taylor Galleries. After the death of Maud Stumm in 1935, Hoffmeier took over the direction of the annual Sidewalk Art Show, which she ran for the next eighteen years “with untiring cheerfulness and unflagging interest.” She was one of the founding members of the Artists Association of Nantucket and served on its first executive committee. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachuetts, Hoffmeier taught art classes at the college for several years. From 1917 to 1951 she was a teacher at West Chester High School in Pennslyvania, where she headed the mathematics department. In addition to enrolling in the plein air classes of Frank Swift Chase...

By Benjamin Williams Leader
Located in Wiscasett, ME
Oil on panel, signed and dated 1894 in the lower left and inscribed on the reverse. The frame measures 15.25" x 19.25".
Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802–79) and Sarah Whiting (1801–88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker – their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist – a friend of John Constable – and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn. His brother, also Edward Leader Williams, later became a notable civil engineer who was knighted for his work, and is now mainly remembered for designing Manchester ship canal...

A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills
By Benjamin Williams Leader
Located in Wiscasett, ME
Oil on artist panel, signed and dated lower left. It measures 19.75" x 22.75" including the frame, which is likely the original.
Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 – 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. The inspiration for these early works was the countryside around Worcester itself, "the cottages, farmhouses, lanes, hedgerows and churches, so exceedingly picturesque and beautiful". However, Leader did not finish his course of studies at the R. A, nor did he need to – his paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers and he achieved an enviable degree of commercial success within only a few years of his first sale. In 1857 he changed his name to Benjamin Williams Leader to distinguish himself from the many other painters with the surname Williams. In autumn of that year he travelled to Scotland, and painted A Quiet pool in Glen Falloch...

This piece was carved after reading 50 shades of Gray.
Artist statement: My passion for sculpting is expressed in my creation of the virtual records of contemporary culture. I capture everyday objects in carved stone, using a technique I invented more than 20 years ago. At the start I mull over the food, article of clothing or particular brand I wish to replicate as historical evidence for future generations. I feel driven to duplication by carving stone of similar color – or purchasing one of neutral tones and staining it to that which I desire. I ask myself, ‘Will a bottle of Heinz ketchup...
