Poul Henningsen PH5 Pendant in Hues of Blue for Louis Poulsen
By Poul Henningsen
Located in Tilburg, NL
Poul Henningsen PH5 pendant for Louis Poulsen. Denmark. Designed in 1958. New, current production.
Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to constant changes made to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers, naming it after the size of the pendant’s main shade, which is 50 cm in diameter. When the lamp was introduced, he wrote, typically daringly, about how he had lost faith in whether the manufacturers of incandescent light bulbs would ever learn to consider common sense or have the consumer’s best interests at heart: “I have accepted fate, and with Louis Poulsen´s permission I have designed a PH fixture, which can be used with any kind of light source, Christmas lights and 100 W metal filament bulbs. Although a fluorescent tube would be too much to ask in the existing form!” Henningsen wanted to improve the colour reproduction characteristics of the light source in the PH 5. Small red and blue shades were therefore inserted to supplement the colour in the part of the spectrum where the eye is least sensitive – the red and blue areas – thereby subduing the light in the middle yellow-green region where the eye is most sensitive. At the time, no one knew that the PH 5 would become synonymous with the PH light, which remains 100% glare-free, irrespective of how the light is installed or which light source is used. The red and blue rings...

Vilhelm Lauritzen 'VL Studio' Wall Lamp in Brass for Louis Poulsen
By Vilhelm Lauritzen
Located in Tilburg, NL
Vilhelm Lauritzen 'VL Studio' wall lamp in brass for Louis Poulsen. Designed in the 1940s. New, current production.
The VL Studio family derives from a lamp designed by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen for Radiohuset (The Radio House, headquarters of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation) in Copenhagen in the 1940s. The name ‘Studio’ was chosen because some of the lamps were used outside studios to indicate – with either a red or green light – whether recording was taking place. Vilhelm Lauritzen was the architect behind Radiohuset, which was inaugurated in his functionalist design in 1945. Radiohuset is a ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ – like most of Lauritzen’s buildings – meaning that he designed all the interiors and every detail of the building for the project. When developing Radiohuset, Lauritzen designed a broad collection of lamps in close collaboration with Louis Poulsen. For this project, Lauritzen created the Studio lamp, the VL 38...

Anne Boysen 'Moonsetter' Light Sculpture and Floor Lamp for Louis Poulsen
By Anne Boysen

Anne Boysen 'Moonsetter' light sculpture and floor lamp for Louis Poulsen. New, current limited production in series of 100.
The sculptural floor lamp in chrome-plated aluminium has a rotating disc that allows customisation of the reflection of the glare-free light emitted by the LED light source elegantly submerged in the frame. The disc rotates 360° around its own axis and is white on one side and reflective on the other. Tilted towards the white side, the light becomes soft and diffuse, whereas the opposite chrome side reflects the light panel directly for a completely different expression. The light is directed according to the position of the disc. The surroundings are mirrored in the frame...

By Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen PH 3½-2½ glass table in black for Louis Poulsen. Designed in 1928. New, current production.
The PH 3½-2½ glass Table lamp was designed in 1928 and is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. Poul Henningsen devoted most of his life to taming electric light. He based his three-shade design on a logarithmic spiral to make optimum use of the light source. He was constantly doing calculations and tests. The form of the shades was determined by the way they were required to shape and reflect the light, and the lamp was designed to be glare-free. The first PH Table lamp...

Arne Jacobsen AJ Table in Ocher Yellow for Louis Poulsen
By Arne Jacobsen
Located in Tilburg, NL
Arne Jacobsen AJ Table in Ocher Yellow for Louis Poulsen. Designed in 1957. New, current production.
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Collection) in 1957. Today, the AJ family is regarded as the design that the Danish architect is best known for all over the world. At that time, the AJ family comprised a table and a floor lamp as well as a wall lamp, a small table lamp and a table lamp that was designed to attach to the table. The wall lamp could be found in beautiful rows in stainless steel in the lobby when the hotel was opened in 1960. In combination with the pendant AJ Royal, the AJ Lamp formed part of the overall design concept that Jacobsen created for the hotel. Arne Jacobsen did not just design the hotel down to the smallest detail for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), he also designed almost all the hotel’s original furniture and utility items. The profile of the AJ Lamp with its straight lines and its combination of oblique and right angles is not only seen as a formal parallel to the profile of the Series 3300 seats, but also to the geometric profiles of his buildings. The AJ Lamp was used in several parts of the hotel, in copper and stainless steel. Furthermore, it was originally available in light grey, dark brown and black like the AJ Pendant...

Poul Henningsen PH5 Pendant in Classic White for Louis Poulsen
At the time, no one knew that the PH 5 would become synonymous with the PH light...
