Axel Einar Hjorth "Utö" Bench, Sweden ca 1935
By Axel Einar Hjorth
Located in Utrecht, NL
This “Utö” bench is from the Swedish designer, Axel Einar Hjorth’s Sportstugemöble furniture line.
This bench has a rather simple, yet well-thought out design. The frame is made of pine, mixing the aesthetics of rural, traditional handcraft with international modernism. Produced by AB Nordiska Kompaniet, this bench belongs to Hjorth's line of modernistic cabin furniture from the 1930's. The seat of the bench is thick and robust, with an oval shaped pine board, assuring sturdiness and stability. The symmetrically carved back with a gap in the middle offers comfort and functionality.
The four tapered legs of the bench follow the shape of the backrests on both sides, accentuating the geometrical aspect, and highlighting the symmetry of this piece.

Woven Rattan Stool, Europe Early 20th Century
Located in Utrecht, NL
In the professional field of interior design, certain pieces and types of furniture hold a timeless allure, effortlessly weaving together functionality, aesthetic appeal, and a rich history. Among these treasures is the simple, way too often overlooked, but extremely versatile stool,
This lovely piece from the early 20th century is entirely Crafted from the organic material rattan, and embodies a harmonious blend of natural beauty, craftsmanship, and functional elegance, making it a perfect accent piece for both modern and classic interior settings.
Rattan, derived from the climbing palms native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Australasia, boasts a unique combination of flexibility, durability, and lightweight properties. As such, its pliable nature allows skilled artisans to deftly manipulate and weave it into intricate patterns, resulting in furniture pieces like this stool that exude both sophistication and an artisan, rustic charm. Similarly to traditional wooden furniture, rattan possesses a warmth and tactile quality that invites touch and appreciation of its natural texture.
The resurgence of stools in contemporary interior design can be attributed to several factors; Firstly, their compact size and versatility make them ideal for maximizing space in smaller living areas or apartments. Stools can easily be tucked away when not in use, serving as convenient additional seating when guests arrive or as a practical surface for holding books, plants, or decorative items. Moreover, their understated elegance, individuality, and timeless appeal complement a wide range of interior styles, from minimalist and Scandinavian to Bohemian and eclectic.
At the heart of this rattan stool's charm lies its exquisite weaving patterns and impeccable quality. Each strand of rattan is skilfully interlaced to form intricate circular motifs and geometric designs, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail of its maker. The weaving technique employed in crafting this stool results in a sturdy yet lightweight structure, capable of withstanding the test of time while retaining its graceful silhouette.
The stool's slightly splayed, bent legs add a touch of visual interest and stability, while the metal caps on its feet provide both protection and a subtle hint of industrial flair. This thoughtful combination of materials and design elements enhances the stool's durability and aesthetic appeal, ensuring that it remains a cherished heirloom for generations to come.
Versatile in its functionality, the rattan stool can serve as a humble pallet for showcasing curated collections or as an elegant flower pedestal, bringing a touch of natural beauty indoors. Its timeless allure and understated sophistication make it a beloved accent piece in modern interiors, where it serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of organic materials and masterful craftsmanship.
In conclusion, the intricately woven rattan stool...

Counterpoint Wall Lamps "C-1626" by Raak, The Netherlands 1960s
By RAAK
Located in Utrecht, NL
In the realm of mid-20th century Dutch design, these model "C-1626" wall lamps remain fascinating designs defined by the contrast of the smooth-round satin-matt glass and the angular-straight grey metal. Produced by RAAK Amsterdam and envisioned during the 1960s, this pair stands as evidence to the era's minimalist aesthetic. Hailing from the 1960s, these wall lamps are not only embodiments of simplicity and elegance, showcasing a design ethos that continues to captivate admirers today, but also illustrate how minimalist design can be so ingenious and expressive at the same time.
These so-called Counterpoint Wall Lamps, specifically, model "C-1626" lamps by Raak Amsterdam exemplify the sophisticated and minimalist design ethos that defined 1960s lighting in the Netherlands. Crafted during an era where form and function coalesced seamlessly, these lamps remain enduring testaments to the timeless appeal of mid-century modernism.
The essence of the Counterpoint Wall Lamps lies in their deliberate counterplay between simplicity and efficacy. Raak's design philosophy, epitomized in these C-1626 models, embraces clean lines and uncluttered aesthetics. The lamps feature a geometrically refined structures that effortlessly integrate into contemporary interiors, making them a compelling choice for discerning collectors.

Raak Amsterdam, a true vanguard in Dutch lighting design, played a pivotal role in shaping the visual landscape of the 1960s. Their meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to minimalist elegance laid the foundation for a design language that continues to resonate today. RAAK Amsterdam was started in the year 1954 by Carel O. Lockhorn, who before was employed by Philips in the south of the Netherlands. RAAK had its main sales outlets in both Eindhoven and Amsterdam. The aim of the company was to advise for correct usage of lighting devices, in a way that these are adapted to the surrounding architecture. The name “RAAK” can be loosely translated as “bulls eye” in Dutch, i.e. the company hits the target with respect to its design and function. The designs produced by the company were aimed at being modest, elegant, and effective. These ideals are fully translated into the design of this pair; The design is clearly aimed at being modest, elegant, and effective. For collectors and connoisseurs alike, these Counterpoint Wall Lamps model "C-1626" stand as both a nod to history and a beacon of timeless style for contemporary interiors.Characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and a commitment to functionalism. Their minimalist form, where form follows function with remarkable precision is achieved by the use of glass and metal.
With their unadorned bodies and a subtle play of light and shadow, the design fully utilizes the differently textured and coloured elements. The design is remarkable for its ability to seamlessly blend into diverse interior settings. The design has great proportions, to create an attention-grabbing look. When lit, these lamps create an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the glass a warm, cosy colour as well.
Raak Amsterdam, the illustrious producer of these lights was renowned for its commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. Established in 1954, Raak quickly gained recognition for collaborating with exceptional designers like Jan-Willem Bosman. Their partnership produced timeless lighting solutions that continue to inspire contemporary designers and enthusiasts alike. This pair is a modernist design to its core with a look that is ageless and can stand out but also complement any space.
During its existence, RAAK collaborated with several famous designers such as Betrand Balas (Springfontein Lamp), Frank Ligtelijn (Globe Lamp) or Maija-Liisa Komulainen (Fuga lamp...
