Blue Period, Parasols, The Beach, Côté d'Azur.
By Auguste Chabaud
Located in Cotignac, FR
Early 20th Century French pastel drawing of a beach scene in the South of France by noted fauvist artist Auguste Chabaud. Carrying the stamped atelier signature, possibly from his 'Blue Period'. Auguste CHABAUD was born in Nîmes on October 3, 1882. At the age of fourteen Chabaud joined the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Avignon. In 1899 he went to Paris to continue his artistic training at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. There he met Henri Matisse and André Derain. In 1900 he returned to his parents' vineyard in southern France briefly before returning to Paris. In 1901, he was forced to leave Paris again in order to secure his livelihood. He worked on a ship and got to know the West African coast. Upon his return in 1907 and in the following years, he became acquainted with and captured in his paintings the excitement of the Parisian nightlife. In the Paris neighbourhood Montmartre, where he had his studio, he painted various scenes of Parisian life and cafe society. At the same time, he continued to paint Provence and took part in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, where he exhibited with the Fauves. Chabaud's Cubist phase began in 1911, where he also began sculpting. In the following years he had many exhibitions, including 1913 in New York, where his works were exhibited alongside those of artists such as Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Picasso. After his return from the first World War Chabaud settled down in Graveson. From 1920 he had his "blue period". He used the Prussian Blue as the only colour in his works. From then, he focused exclusively on the south of France. He painted scenes of rural life, the farmers, and the hills and trails of the Alpilles. A very important retrospective exhibition of his work took place in Paris in 1952, which gave him the opportunity to return to Paris, which he had left in 1914. Another retrospective exhibition in Paris took place in 1965 commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death. He died in 1955 in Graveson. In 1966, he was represented at the exhibition “Le Fauvisme français et les débuts de l’impressionnisme Allemand” (French Fauvism...

The Jurassic Coast, Dorset.
By Ruskin Spear
Located in Cotignac, FR
An English watercolour on paper coastal scene signed with initials 'RS' bottom right. Presented in its original gilt wood frame under glass with trade label to the backboard from Deighton’s Strand Gallery. This gallery was well-known during the 1930s as fine art dealers and frame makers – it was located off Trafalgar square. Though he often signed with his full name Ruskin Spear's work on paper 'Hammersmith Grove' is signed in the same initials as our work and hence the attribution. This work is also stylistically similar to his other drawings of seascapes and coastal landscapes. This is a charming and fresh view of a coastal landscape probably the Jurassic coast of Dorset or his beloved Cornwall. The vertiginous composition gives it an angular almost abstract form highlighted by the contrast between the colour of the rockface, the vegetation and the blue sea. The work is in nice condition and wonderful to have the original framing. Initially influenced by Walter Sickert, the Camden Town Group...

Cookham Dean, A Post Impressionist Landscape, Homage to Cezanne
By Bernard Meninsky
Located in Cotignac, FR
An English Post Impressionist gouache of trees in a landscape by noted artist Bernard Meninsky. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a very fine custom patinated and gilt frame with cloth insert, under glass. There is an exhibition label to the back of the frame, giving the painting's location 'Cookham Dean' in Berkshire near the home of noted contemporary of Meninsky, Stanley Spencer. Provenance: The Boydell Galleries, Liverpool. A charming work when Meninsky was clearly showing the influence and his love for the paintings of Cezanne. The simplification of forms, as well as the flattening of landscape and the use of colour to give perspective. An earlier work by Meninsky but important in his artistic journey to his evolving style. Bernard Meninsky (25 July 1891–12 February 1950) was a British painter of figures and landscapes in oils, watercolour and gouache, a draughtsman and a teacher. Meninsky was born in Konotop, modern-day Ukraine, where his father was a tailor and the family were Yiddish-speaking Ukrainian Jews. They moved to Liverpool when Bernard was six weeks old. Although Meninsky left school at the age of eleven, his talent for art was demonstrated by the sale of a drawing to a local comic postcard business. While working as an errand boy during the day, he attended free classes in art in the evenings, and these enabled him to gain a place at the Liverpool School of Art. He studied there from 1906 to 1911, being financed by a succession of scholarships. He attended summer courses at the Royal College of Art, London, in August 1909 and August 1910, and in 1911 he won a scholarship to study at the Académie Julian in Paris for three months. With financial support from the Liverpool Jewish community and the Jewish Educational Aid Society (JEAS), Meninsky studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1912. His contemporaries there included David Bomberg, Isaac Rosenberg...

Trees in a Landscape French Country Landscape
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...

Sail vs Steam, 19th Century French Marine Drawing
By Georges Ricard-Cordingley
Located in Cotignac, FR
Late 19th century drawing on paper of a French marine scene by noted French artist Georges Ricard-Cordingley. Carrying the atelier stamp to the bottom right, presented in modern black frame. Provenance: This drawing came from the estate of the artist's daughter who had acquired it directly from her father. It is from his earliest period of drawing when his talents were first being recognised. A charming drawing capturing the scene of a steam tug docked next to a larger sailing boat, the scene probably at Boulogne sur Mer. Cordingley has captured the majesty of the scene, the juxtaposition of old and new technologies. It probably dates from his earliest period when he was showing prodigious talent in his early teens. Georges Ricard was born on January 30, 1873 in Lyon, son of Prosper Louis Ricard and Georgina Marie Cordingley. He spent part of his childhood in Lyon and Boulogne-sur-Mer. He displayed early gifts for drawing. He lost his father in 1885. He began his training around 1887, becoming a pupil of Jean-Charles Cazin, a landscape painter from Pas-de-Calais and the Côte d'Opale. He then joined the School of Fine Arts in Lyon and remained there from 1888 to 1889. He moved to Paris in 1890, where he studied at the Académie Julian as a pupil of Benjamin Constant, Louis Martinet and Jules Lefebvre. He lost his mother around 1892, went to England to his maternal family and added his mother's name to his name. He embarked for the North Sea with the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and carried out his first studies. In 1894, he met with great success at the court of Queen Victoria. He embarked a second time, in 1895, still for the North Sea and produced numerous studies of waves of clouds, of the port and of portraits of fishermen...

Fishing Boats, late 19th Century French Marine Mauve Ink Drawing
By Georges Ricard-Cordingley
Located in Cotignac, FR
Late 19th century mauve ink drawing on paper of fishing boats at harbour by noted French artist Georges Ricard-Cordingley. The drawing is signed bottom left and carries various annotations and another small sketch. The drawing is presented in a period wood frame under glass with a double card mount. Provenance: This drawing came from the estate of the artist's daughter who had acquired it directly from her father. A charming drawing capturing the scene fishing boats at harbour with extensive detail of the rigging and sails. It seems to be a preparatory sketch as it carries extensive colour and other annotations. There is also a smaller sketch bottom right which shows the boat from a different perspective. The figures are well annotated and Cordingley has achieved great detail but with a lightness of touch. The sketch is even more interesting as it is completed in mauve ink. This was a fashionable and technical innovation at the time as the colour was only 'invented' in the late 1850s. A really interesting, lovely and evocative drawing. He embarked a second time, in 1895, still for the North Sea and produced numerous studies of waves of clouds, of the port and of portraits of fishermen which he exhibited in Paris and London. He embarked a third time, around 1896, in the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean with the Société des Travaux de Mer and was shipwrecked in Newfoundland. In 1901, he set up his studio in Boulogne-sur-Mer. He divided his time between London, Paris and Boulogne-sur-Mer and painted portraits and seascapes. He realized the decoration of the casino of Wimereux. He travelled to Australia, where he exhibited from 1909 to 1910. In 1911, he married Suzanne Giraud-Teulon, the daughter of historian Alexis Giraud-Teulon, and had three children, Éliane, Louis and Gabrielle. During the First World War, he was assigned to Lyon as a stretcher...

Paquebot à Boulogne Sur Mer, late 19th Century French Marine Drawing
By Georges Ricard-Cordingley
Located in Cotignac, FR
Late 19th century drawing on paper of a French marine scene by noted French artist Georges Ricard-Cordingley. Carrying the atelier stamp to the bottom left and with full annotation and certification to the back of the paper. Provenance: This drawing came from the estate of the artist's daughter who had acquired it directly from her father. It is from his earliest period of drawing when his talents were first being recognised. A charming drawing capturing the scene of a paquebot, a small passenger ship, leaving the dock at Boulogne sur Mer. Cordingley has captured the majesty of the scene, the rolling waves, the force of nature. A Fishing Boat at Sea, Late Mid-Century Gouache on Paper
Located in Cotignac, FR
French gouache on paper of a boat travelling the seas. The work is unsigned but dated 22/11/70. Presented in simple gilt frame with handcut mount. A really engaging and powerful painting. The artist has managed to capture the swell of the sea, the movement of the boat listing gently to one side, the slightly rusty hull, the moody sky filled with all the seagulls following behind, which suggests it might be a fishing boat. They have used a limited but strong colour palette, blues, blacks and greys and then just to highlight and catch the eye a splash of green to represent the starboard or right bow light.
