Basquiat at Vrej Baghoomian gallery 1989 (Basquiat Red Warrior announcement)
By Jean-Michel Basquiat
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Basquiat: Vrej Baghoomian gallery New York, 1989: Vintage original folding announcement card to Jean-Michel Basquiat at Vrej Baghoomian Gallery New York: 10/21 to 11/25, 1989. Pictured on front side is an image of Basquiat's iconic, 'Red Warrior.' A rare, highly collectible Basquiat ephemera piece that works well in any collection. Off-set printed gallery announcement. 8.75 x 5.75 inches (folded closed). Light signs of handling; otherwise very good overall vintage condition. Published by Vrej Baghoomian Gallery, New York, 1989. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Scarce. Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. Related Categories: Basquiat Tony Shafrazi. Basquiat ephemera. Basquiat poster. Vintage 1970s Alexander Calder poster (Calder prints)
By (after) Alexander Calder
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Alexander Calder 'La Grenouille et Cie': Vintage original 1971 poster for the exhibition Pace Columbus (Ohio) featuring a printed Calder signature. Medium: Offset lithograph. Dimensions: 25 x 32 inches. An original 1st printing in very good vintage condition. Plate signed on the lower right from an edition of unknown. This is an original 1970s poster and not a recent reproduction of any kind. Alexander Calder changed the course of modern art with his three-dimensional kinetic sculptures, which Marcel Duchamp named “mobiles.” Resonating with tenets of Futurism, Constructivism, and early non-objective painting, Calder’s mobiles consist of boldly colored abstract shapes, which are made from industrial materials and hang in lyrical balance. Calder was an international phenomenon during his lifetime. He won the grand prize for sculpture at the 1952 Venice Biennale, where he represented the United States. He earned the French Legion of Honor and the American Presidential Medal of Freedom, among other honors. Calder has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Rijksmuseum, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and the Museo Reina Sofía. His work regularly sells for eight figures on the secondary market. Though Calder is best known for his mobiles, his diverse practice also encompassed standing sculpture, painting, set and costume design, large-scale public installation, and jewelry-making. Working inside the punk movement, Pettibon’s art from this early period encapsulates the irreverence, intensity, and heightened self-awareness of youth, and chronicles the development of his characteristic violently shadowed and coarse aesthetic. Looks superb matted & framed. Derrière le miroir: In October 1945 the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The publication was created in October 1946 (n°1) and published without interruption until 1982 (n°253). Among them were, Pierre Alechinsky, Francis Bacon, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Vassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Saul Steinberg and Antoni Tapies. Widely considered one of the leading Surrealists (though he was never officially part of the group), Joan Miró was also a pioneer of automatism: a method of spontaneous drawing that attempted to express the inner workings of the human psyche. Miró used color and form in a symbolic manner, developing intricate compositions and a wandering linear style that combined abstract elements with recurring motifs such as birds, eyes, and the moon. During his lifetime, Miró received the Grand Prize for Graphic Work at the 1954 Venice Biennale, exhibited at the first Documenta exhibition in 1955, and enjoyed multiple high-profile retrospectives. Today, Miró’s work—which has sold for eight figures at auction—can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art, among other institutions. His public sculptures and murals are installed in cities around the world, including Milan, Paris, and Barcelona. Related Categories: Mid Century Modern. 1960s. Joan Miro prints...

From: Derrière le miroir Published Paris c. 1971. Printed in France. Alexander Calder was an American artist best known for his invention of the kinetic sculptures known as mobiles. Calder also produced a variety of two-dimensional artworks including lithographs, paintings, and tapestries as seen in his Butterfly (1970). “My whole theory about art is the disparity that exists between form, masses, and movement,” the artist once said. Born on August 22, 1898 in Lawnton, PA, Calder turned to art in the 1920s, studying drawing and painting under George Luks and Boardman Robinson at the Art Students League in New York. Calder moved to Paris to continue his studies in 1926, where he was introduced to the European avant-garde through performances of his Cirque Calder (1926–1931). “I was very fond of the spatial relations,” he said of his interest in the circus. “The whole thing of the—the vast space—I’ve always loved it.” With these performances, along with his wire sculptures, Calder attracted the attention of such notable figures as Marcel Duchamp, Jean Arp, and Fernand Léger. Notably, it was his friend Duchamp that coined the term mobile—a pun in French meaning both “motion” and “motive”—during a visit to Calder’s Paris studio in 1931. His earliest mobiles moved by motors, but Calder soon abandoned these mechanics and designed pieces that moved by air currents or human interaction. Over the course of seven decades, along with his mobiles, he also produced paintings, monumental outdoor sculptures, works on paper, domestic objects, and jewelry. The artist lived in both Roxbury, CT, and Saché, France, before his death on November 11, 1976 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tate Gallery in London. Antoni Tàpies lithograph (1960s Tàpies prints)
By Antoni Tàpies
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Antoni Tàpies Lithograph 1969 Published by: Sala Gaspar as part of the 1969 Tàpies catalog. Lithograph in colors. 9x7 inches. Very good overall vintage condition. Printed signature from an edition of unknown. Antoni Tàpies: In his wide-ranging practice, Antoni Tàpies combined rich conceptual concerns with material experimentation and monumental scales. His work was variously informed by early modernists including Paul Klee and Joan Miró and by Art Informel artists, such as Jean Dubuffet, who were his contemporaries. Throughout his paintings, prints, sculptures, and works on paper, Tàpies built a visual language full of thick, impastoed gestural marks and a cosmology of symbols and scripts. His materials ranged from trash and earth to dust and stone, which created a sense of solidity and physicality throughout his oeuvre. Tàpies participated in the Venice Biennale four times and exhibited in cities including Paris, London, Barcelona, Brussels, Berlin, Tokyo, Zürich, and New York. His work has sold for seven figures at auction and belongs in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Fondation Beyeler, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate. 1960s Antoni Tàpies lithograph (Tàpies prints)
By Antoni Tàpies
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Antoni Tàpies Lithograph 1969 Published by: Sala Gaspar as part of the 1969 Tàpies catalog. Lithograph in colors 9x14 inches Center fold-line as issued; light fading/yellowing; otherwise very good condition for its age. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Antoni Tàpies Over the course of his career in painting, printmaking, and etching, Antoni Tàpies (Spanish 1923-2012) has created his own visual language of symbols and marks to help communicate the broad range of influences in his work including, most significantly, his Catalan roots, as well as his involvement with the Parisian intellectual scene of the 1950s, meeting exponents of Art informel like Jean Fautrier and Jean Dubuffet. Tàpies’s abstract paintings are made with expressive blends of impasto, gestural brush strokes, often backwards hand-written script, and common materials such as soil and marble dust. Related Categories Spanish painters. Mid Century Modern. 1960s. Contemporary Art. Abstract art. Tàpies prints.
