Set of four Baroque style carved giltwood and velvet throne armchairs Italian, 20th Century Height 170cm, width 93cm, depth 73cm This magnificent set of four throne armchairs was crafted in Italy during the 20th century. Their design is inspired by the Baroque style, popular in Europe in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Each armchair is adorned with an intricately carved giltwood frame, featuring pierced backs lavishly decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves. The top rail of each backrest is carved with two putti perched atop grape vines, likely a nod to Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine and celebration. These figures flank a central cartouche filled with additional ornate scrollwork. At the centre of the backrests is a coat of arms surrounded by more detailed acanthus carvings. Upholstered in sumptuous maroon velvet, the seats and armrests offer both luxury and comfort. The armrests culminate in striking carved winged busts, supported by scrolling elements that further enhance the armchairs' regal presence. Each throne stands on four legs, with the front two carved into lion paws—a popular symbol of strength and majesty. Known for his Orientalist works in bronze and marble, Cordier gained inspiration from his visits to Algeria. The male figure of this pair is after a study made during one of these visits. The figures form a wonderfully contrasting pair. The male bust wears a more sombre, downturned expression, whilst the female smiles almost sleepily. Both faces are expertly carved to achieve a human likeness, and the two figures are similarly dressed in embellished shirts and robes. Burchard (d.1738), Gustav (d. 1763) and Christian (d. 1779) Precht were synonymous with 18th century mirror production in Sweden and crafted exceptional pieces for the Swedish court. Mounted on an ebonised wood backing, the front of the mirrors is adorned with gilt metal frames and engraved glass detailing. The egg and dart motif is used for the gilt metal frames. The glass is engraved with floral and scrolling patterns, in between which are gilt metal mounts of a similar design. Centering each mirror is a large glass plane. Sitting atop a resin-treated metal trunk are multiple hardstone blooms, with materials including lapis lazuli, rose quartz, and carnelian. Each blossom is centred by a stigma, which comprises yellow beads held together by thread-wrapped wire. The vibrant and pastel shades of the flowers are excellently contrasted by the dark green leaves, which are expertly carved from nephrite. The tree sits within a black cloisonné enamel planter. The pot is decorated with pastel pink flowers surrounded by green leaves, complementing the floral theme of the object. Miniature gold clouds cover the entirety of the pot, which in Chinese culture symbolise oncoming good fortune. A metal trunk is set within the planter, treated with resin to evoke the natural texture of the bark. The trompe l’oeil illusion is continued via the branches, which are comprised of wire wrapped with brown thread. The branches are capped with a number of nephrite leaves and hardstone blooms, which contrast dark green shades with light red and pink flowers. The petals are carved from carnelian, rose quartz, and jade, and these hardstones can connote symbolic symbolism such as strength and healing.
