Large Fleur de Pêche marble and ormolu antique fireplace French, 19th Century Height 121cm, width 188cm, depth 63cm This stunning fireplace combines unusual Fleur de Pêche marble with sculptural ormolu mounts. The fireplace consists of a panelled frieze, below which is the wide serpentine opening. The twin jambs are canted in form, and are supported by footblocks. The use of the historic Fleur de Pêche marble is particularly pleasing: featuring deep veining in a palette of cream, purple, and brown, the marble was highly popular for opulent 19th century design, adorning elite interiors such as the main hall of the Napoleon III apartments in the Louvre. The fireplace is adorned with several ormolu mounts. A large Rococo scallop shell form decorates the centre of the marble frieze, trailed by acanthus leaves. The upper sections of the jambs are applied with female terms, whose bodies dissolve into further acanthus-style forms. The bottom sections also feature gilt-bronze decoration, with further scallop shell designs. The fireplace also features a cast-iron inset, decorated with geometric designs. The fireplace clearly takes inspiration from the Rococo-style fireplace in the Council Cabinet in the King’s Apartments at Versaille, which was designed in the late 18th century by Jacques Verberckt and Jacques Caffiéri. The ovoid-form vases are applied with lavish natural designs on the main body, decorated with eye-catching birds and butterflies amongst flowers and shrubbery. The animal and foliate motifs are set on top of a cream ground with intricate geometric patterning that emphasises the elaborate design of the vases. The necks of the vases are similarly decorated with birds and greenery. The necks and feet also feature ornate geometric patterns that complement the natural colour palette of the main body, adding further intricacy to the enamelled designs. Surmounting the vases is a pierced ormolu rim, which features acanthus-style and pineapple designs which complement the foliate imagery on the vases below. Each vase is mounted on four gilt-bronze feet cast in the shape of Chinese 'Foo' winged lions, combining impressive Chinese motifs with exceptional French craftsmanship. Its surface is adorned with a selection of patterns and motifs created using the traditional woodblock printing technique called kalamkari (or Qalamkari). The 400 years old technique originating from Isfahan, utilises only natural and local materials, celebrating and supporting the local communities. Large Viennese cold-painted bronze lamp of a mandolin player by Bergman Austrian, c. 1910 Height 39cm, width 15cm, depth 15cm Crafted around 1910 by Franz Xaver Bergman (Austrian, 1861-1936), this Orientalist sculptural lamp depicts a young woman playing a mandolin and singing. She is sitting on a green cushioned seat while beneath her feet is a polychrome patterned rug draped on two steps. Dressed in typical Orientalist clothing, her beautifully executed facial expression suggests she is in a joyful mood. Above the main figure is a domed canopy. Its construction includes a pierced window draped by a striped red and gold curtain. A gold shield and a flag also hang on the construction. The domed cover is superbly decorated with trefoil windows filled with coloured glass and is surmounted by a crescent moon which is an important symbol of Islam. A similar motif can also be observed on the flagpole. The lamp is stamped with a ‘B’ in an urn-shaped cartouche, ‘GESCH’ as well as ‘3’. The cold-painting technique has been superbly used to highlight even the smallest details of the scene, such as the patterns on the rug or the texture of the seat.
