Engraver and printmaker, Hiroyuki Tajima was born in Tokyo in 1911 and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. In 1934, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Arts with a specialization in western-style painting. Tajima later studied fabric dyeing under Hirokawa Matsugoro (1889-1952) and woodblock printing with the Sosaku-Hanga artist, Nagase Yoshiro (1891-1978), a founder of the Japan Print Association (Hanga Kyokai). In 1946, inspired by Dada and Surrealism, Tajima joined Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai, a group dedicated to exploring and reviving the abstract and surrealist painting ideals that had been suppressed during WWII.
Tajima exhibited widely and with success, including with Tokyo's Modern Art Association (Prix du Nouveau Venu, 1962), the Japanese Engraving Association, the Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition in Tokyo (1962), the Northwest International Print Exhibition (1962-1964) and the Tokyo International Print Biennale (1964). His work is held in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (British Columbia), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia), the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO) and the British Museum in London.

A large, Post-Impressionist figural oil showing a pregnant young woman, draped from the waist down, with her hands resting serenely in her lap. Seated beside a garden door, she is gently dappled by golden sunlight that filters in through verdant foliage. Painted when the artist was forty years old, Hertz has accomplished a lyrical, light-suffused study of his beautiful and enigmatic young subject.
Mogens Hertz first studied with the Academician, Laurits Ring and, subsequently, with the Danish Impressionist, Rostrup Boyesen. In 1930, after an influential study trip to Paris, Hertz continued his formal studies at Copenhagen's Charlottenborg Academy before moving to the countryside outside Gudhjem. There, he became a co-founder of the Bornholm School. His work there came to exemplify the group's lyrical portrayal of idyllic landscapes, painted in a loose and painterly, Impressionist style that often borders on abstraction.
From 1930-1941, Hertz traveled and studied widely, including to France, Holland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. He was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including the August Schiøtt scholarship (1948) and the Frederik Sødring prize (1939). Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he exhibited widely and with success including, from 1937, at the Royal Danish Academy's Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, at the Bornholm Art Museum and the Vejen Art Museum, among others. Mogens Hertz is well-listed in relevant art biographical reference works including Benezit's definitive dictionary of artists. We are pleased to offer a major work from the artist's middle period.

Born in Los Angeles, Katherine Westphal first attended Los Angeles City College and, subsequently, the University of California at Berkeley where she studied painting and art history and received both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. In 1943, she was awarded the Phelan Travelling Scholarship which funded her travel to Mexico where she visited the studios of both David Siquieros and Diego Rivera, an experience that confirmed her lifelong preference for Modernist principles in her work. Over the course of a long and multi-faceted career, Westphal exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. In addition to her career as a fine artist, Westphal wrote extensively on art theory and also became a beloved teacher at the University of California, Davis, becoming a tenured faculty member in 1968, a full professor in 1975.
