A serene, Parisian cityscape showing an aerial perspective of the Seine and the Île Saint-Louis viewed from above the Quai des Célestins, and looking towards the Île de la Cité and Notre Dame in the distance.
This early Danish Post-Impressionist artist first studied with Marie Sandholt and Astrid Holm at the Copenhagen Art Academy and, subsequently, at the School of Graphics (1929-31). Christensen continued his studies while traveling widely in Europe, including to Germany and Austria (1913-14), Paris (1917-23) and to Budapest and Vienna (1934). In 1935, he was awarded the Michaelsen Scholarship which enabled him to remain in Paris during the late 1930's. During intense period of development and creativity, he moved away from the bold colors and defined forms of his earlier Fauve and Cubist periods and began to explore the creation of predominantly single-color works, often in blues or greens accented with subtle shades of white. After the Second World War, he returned frequently to paint in Paris.
Kay Christensen, like his friend, Rainer Maria Rilke, followed a solitary artistic path in which his imagery was characterized by a personal aesthetic of sensuality combined with a spirited boldness and expressive force. He exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Christensen's work is held in private and public collections including the State Art Museum of Denmark and Copenhagen's Metropolitan Museum, among others. An elegant abstract comprising overlapping forms in deep ruby, coral and jade.
Engraver and printmaker, Hiroyuki Tajima was born in Tokyo in 1911 and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. In 1934, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Arts with a specialization in western-style painting. Tajima later studied fabric dyeing under Hirokawa Matsugoro (1889-1952) and woodblock printing with the Sosaku-Hanga artist, Nagase Yoshiro (1891-1978), a founder of the Japan Print Association (Hanga Kyokai). In 1946, inspired by Dada and Surrealism, Tajima joined Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai, a group dedicated to exploring and reviving the abstract and surrealist painting ideals that had been suppressed during WWII.
Tajima exhibited widely and with success, including with Tokyo's Modern Art Association ( Prix du Nouveau Venu, 1962), the Japanese Engraving Association, the Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition in Tokyo (1962), the Northwest International Print Exhibition (1962-1964) and the Tokyo International Print Biennale (1964). His work is held in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (British Columbia), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia), the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO) and the British Museum in London.

In 1943, she was awarded the Phelan Travelling Scholarship which funded her travel to Mexico where she visited the studios of both David Siquieros and Diego Rivera, an experience that confirmed her lifelong preference for Modernist principles in her work. Over the course of a long and multi-faceted career, Westphal exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. In addition to her career as a fine artist, Westphal wrote extensively on art theory and also became a beloved teacher at the University of California, Davis, becoming a tenured faculty member in 1968, a full professor in 1975. A substantial and lyrically painted watercolor view of the original Spanish colonial church and mission buildings at Carmel on the coast of California with a view beyond towards the Carmel highlands.
Henry "Hank" Volle first attended the University of Illinois and subsequently studied in Europe, including at the Klinger Institute, Vienna. Upon returning to the United States, Volle began to study with the water-colorists of the California Bay area. Essentially a plein-air painter, Hank Volle painted along the California coast where he exhibited with success. He was also a member of the Santa Clara Watercolor Society and the Society of Western Artists.

Ejnar Hansen studied at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Art before moving to the United States in 1914 and settling in Pasadena in 1924. An ardent proponent of modernist color theory, Hansen became an influential teacher at the Chouinard School, the Otis Art Institute, the John Muir College, and the Pasadena School of Fine Arts.
He exhibited widely and with success, including in Denmark and at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the 1939 World's Fair and at the Cincinnati Museum. Ejnar was a member of the Academy of Western Painters, the Los Angeles Art Association, the California Art Club, the California Watercolor Society, Pasadena Society of Artists and the Foundation for Western Art. Ejnar Hansen's works may be found in numerous public and private collections including LACMA, the Pasadena Art Institute and the San Diego Fine Art Society.
