In 1989 he went on to earn an M.F.A at Mills College in Oakland and was awarded the City of Oakland Artist Fellowship in Painting. He has been a Bay Area resident since 1988. His work has been exhibited widely across the U.S., as well as in Japan and Costa Rica, and is included in the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Artist’s Statement:
I have been surrounded by artists virtually all my life. I received my first drawing instruction at the age of six from my father. We were living in New Mexico at the time and he was an avid amateur landscape painter there. Although I dabbled in painting off and on for years, my first career took a different path. Following a BA from the University of Colorado and a PhD from The Ohio State University I entered a career in neuroscience research. However, in 2004, I committed to painting full time and was almost immediately rewarded with the joy of recreating scenes I loved. Lauren Ohlgren (American, b. 1959) began her art career in the mid 1990’s making hand-painted silk and art-to-wear. She then began to work in encaustics, and later incorporated various mixed media into her artwork. Ohlgren was the curator of Journal 365, A Page A Day community project in 2015 and The She Project, 2005-2013. Ohlgren is also the author of 2005 award winning book, The She Project; How ‘She’ Inspired a Community.
