PRESENTING a STUNNING piece of Indian Antiquity from circa the 4th-5th Century, namely, A Stucco Torso of the Buddha, Gandhara. Ancient Gandhara is located in the rugged foothills of the Himalayas in what is today northwest Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan, was for centuries a thriving center of trade along the Silk Road linking China, South Asia, and the Mediterranean. The piece was purchased by a Private Collector at Sotheby’s, or more probably, Christies of New York Auction pre-2000. The paper label on the wooden base is “7281/465” for Sale Number 7281, Lot No. 465. Presenting a lovely vintage gold and brass 4 light lantern from circa 1955. Lovely restored Moe Lighting Lantern from circa 1955. Made in the U.S.A. 4 bulb Lantern in full functional condition and sympathetically restored to its original beauty. The Lantern is gilt metal and brass and is covered in gold leaf. It has been recently re-gilted. The top finial of the lantern is beautifully cast with scrolling arms and handles. There are 5 glass panels edged in brass. The interior working bulb platform is on a tilt central column or lever that tilts with the movement of the lantern in the wind. Both the top and bottom parts of the lantern have a pierced gallery and the base has a removeable plate with a final to access the bulbs on the interior. The interior has a label hidden from view under the bulb base (see photos) confirming that the Lantern was made by Moe Light of Fort Atkinson Wisconsin a Division of Thomas Industries. This helps us date the piece as Moe Lighting was acquired by Thomas Industries in 1953. We are of the opinion that this piece date from the mid 1950’s. A beautiful addition to any home of style !! Thomas Industries was formed in a 1953 merger of two companies–a lighting fixture manufacturer and the maker of electrical spraying machines–both of which came into being in the late 1920s. The unlikely marriage of these two product lines was the cornerstone of what would become the company’s two core businesses: lighting fixtures and air compressors/pumps. The lighting fixture side of Thomas Industries traces its history back to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and two brothers: Henrik and Ole Moe. The Moe Brothers, together with a number of other entrepreneurs, owned the Moe-Bridges Co., a lighting fixture manufacturer formed in 1919. As a result of friction among the Moe-Bridges management, however, the Moe brothers were frozen out of the company in the late 1920s by the majority owners. Deciding to stay with the industry they knew, the Moes formed another lighting fixture company called Moe Brothers Manufacturing. Henrik’s two sons joined the business in the early 1930s, and in 1938, the company moved its operations from Milwaukee to Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. While the Moe brothers were building their lighting fixture business, the Electric Sprayit Company–the forerunner to Thomas Industries’ compressor and pump division–was also testing its wings. In 1928, the Electric Sprayit Company was formed in Chicago “to manufacture, buy, and sell electrical spraying machines, blowers, air compressors, mechanical, and mercantile devices.” In a curious twist of fate, in 1934 the Electric Sprayit Company acquired Moe-Bridges, the company that had forced out the Moe brothers, and moved from Chicago into the Moe-Bridges plant in Milwaukee. In 1939, Electric Sprayit moved its operations again, this time to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. During World War II, both companies stopped making their standard product lines in order to produce materials for the war effort. At the close of the war, in 1946, Moe Brothers received a large contract from Sears to produce household pressure cookers. Although the company had not previously manufactured pressure cookers, the large stamping presses they had obtained for the war gave them the production capabilities for the job. The brothers planned to use sales revenues from the pressure cooker contract to return to the lighting fixture business. Unfortunately, Sears rescinded the company’s contract due to a product malfunction. In the aftermath of the contract loss, pressured by the bank to repay existing debt, the Moe brothers decided to sell the company. Moe Brothers was purchased in 1948 by a Louisville investment group headed by Lee Thomas. Thomas, the former president of Ekco Products in Chicago, had recently purchased a small saw business in Louisville and was looking for further investment opportunities. His new purchase was renamed Moe Light, and a national advertising campaign was launched to promote residential lighting fixtures. Another stunning 19th century Anglo-Ceylonese piece. Made circa 1880 in Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka) of Coromandel wood and specimen woods. This is a simply gorgeous and quality item!! Tray made of various compartments with various high quality specimen wood lids, all edged and banded in chevrons of bone, silver or pewter and ebony. The tray itself is made of expensive coromandel wood. There are two open sections on either side of the tray which have bone and hand-painted lac ends. The main tray sits onto a base made of coromandel wood with green baize lining. This tray could have a number of practical uses, for keeping stationary, watches, jewelry, or thinking outside of the box, holding you remote controls and candy!! Presenting a very important Teddy Roosevelt Letter of June 1911 . On ‘The Outlook’ letterhead. Typed and personally signed and amended by President Theodore Roosevelt. Dated June 20th 1911. What makes this letter so important is the author, the office and the content. It refers to the beliefs and opinions of the then President and First Lady (Edith) towards the women’s sufferage and empowerment movement that was the ‘hot topic’ of the time. It is addressed to Eliza Calvert Hall/Obenchain who was a well known author at the end of the 19th Century and Early 20th Century. In 1905, Teddy referred to her book “Aunt Jane of Kentucky’ in a speech and recommended that every man in America should read it to understand ‘the plight of their womenfolk’. He regularly corresponded with her and we have a number of those letters in our collection. It appears that both he and Edith became big fans of Mrs Hall/Obenchain who was also heavily involved in the Suffragist movement. The letters also provide a fascinating and historic record of Roosevelt’s personal beliefs and feelings on female empowerment. The Letter Reads: The Outlook 287 Fourth Avenue New York Office of Theodore Roosevelt June 20th, 1911 “My dear Miss Hall: I am touched by your sending me “To Love and To Cherish”. Presenting an absolutely gorgeous Queen Anne Style pedestal desk. Made of walnut, butterflied walnut, burl walnut and oyster wood, the veneers on this piece are STUNNING ! Made in England at the end of the 19th Century (circa 1890) this is a stunning replica of an original Queen Anne piece from the late 17th/early 18th Century ! The attention to detail is outstanding from the use of the correct period veneers, right down to the banding and parquetry inlays, to the hardware. It is a diminutive desk as it should be as desk from the Queen Anne period were much, much smaller than desks made today due to the fact that in the 17/18th Century people were much smaller. It consists of 2 pedestals with 2 drawers on each pedestal facing to the front, and 2 doors that open to a single shelf on the other side. The removeable top has 3 working drawers to the front only. It has a fabulous distressed and aged brown leather insert on the top in an oval/floret shape. It sits on 4 curved padded feet. Not marked but obviously made by a top, top maker ! This desk was acquired and owned by a Mr. Jim Quist a well known businessman and high society character in Dallas, who resided at Swiss Ave., Dallas until his death in 2020. Provenance: From the Quist Estate in Dallas Condition: Very good original condition. The 2 teardrop pulls on the front center drawer are later replacements but compliment the period and style. Some very minor veneer repairs, professionally touched up. No keys. Dimensions: 29 inches tall, 54 inches wide and 33 inches deep. Kneehole Clearance 23.5 inches tall and 18.5 inches wide. Presenting an absolutely stunning 19c Anglo Ceylonese sewing box of museum quality. Made in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) circa 1860, this is one of the finest sewing boxes of it’s kind that we have ever seen! The box is made from coromandel wood (an exotic hardwood found in Ceylon) and has a serpentine edging all over the front, back and sides. Very often the lids/tops of these boxes suffer cracks due to shrinkage but this one is near perfect with no crack in the lid/top. There is some evidence of natural shrinkage but that is around the edges of the lid/top. It is when you open this box that it reveals it’s true beauty, quality and treasure ! The inside of the lid/top is heavily and beautifully decorated with inlaid bone in scrolling floral patterns which have then been hand painted with red and black ‘lac’ ink. The central medallion is a circle of inlaid specimen exotic hardwoods radiating towards a central bone and hand painted flower. The circle is edged in bone, wood and silver chevrons. What makes this box Exceptionally rare is that it contains 3 lift out base sections. Normally, there would be a maximum of 2. The first tray/section is clearly for the purposes ancillary to sewing with a pair of sections with bone spools for thread etc. There are 17 other lidded compartments with each one highly decorated using hand painted bone and specimen woods to replicate tortoiseshell. The first tray lifts out to reveal a second removeable tray which is made up of a pair of open sections and 8 specimen wood lidded sections each with chevron banding. The third tray is a smaller tray underneath with 14 lidded compartments each with hand painted bone and specimen wood inlaid lids again, replicating the look of tortoiseshell. Again they are banded with a chevron border. This is a museum quality piece ! It is in fantastic condition for it’s age with the minor shrinkage to the edges of the lid/top, some finger pulls missing and some very minor cracks to the tray lids and bases but nothing that in any way detracts from the piece. No key. Presenting a superb 19C Anglo Indian Sadeli Mosaic greeting card case. Made in or around Bombay, India circa 1880. This is a greeting card case used for holding your greeting cards or business cards of the day ! The body of the case is made from sandalwood and it is fully overlaid with bone and highly intricate Sadeli Mosaic made up of thousands of micro mosaic pieces of bone, ebony, silver/pewter and semi precious stone. The workmanship is stupenduous !!!! This case is almost museum quality. One or two very, very minor losses of mosaic mainly where the top meets the body but otherwise near mint ! SADELI MOSAIC: “Anglo Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents from the early part of the 18th century. They were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the nineteenth century they were imported more commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the middle decades. They were very highly valued, especially the early ones, to the extent that the designs were copied on late 19th and early 20th century tins. The ancient art of Sadeli Mosaic is said to have been introduced from Shiraz in Persia via Sind to Bombay, a long time before the Anglo Indian boxes were made. It was a technique, which required a high degree of skill and patience. It was executed very lavishly, in that the frequent cuts wasted a great amount of the precious materials used. The workmanship was however more than commensurable to the value of the materials. Ivory, silver, pewter (or other metals), wood and horn were cut into faceted rods which were bound together to form geometric patterns. When the glue has set, the rods were sliced in transverse sections. This gave the maker a number of angled circular pieces in the original pattern. Several variations of patterns could be achieved by combining the materials in different ways. The ivory was sometimes dyed green to give an extra color. The mosaic pieces in a combination of patterns, often separated by ivory, ebony, horn or silver stringing were used to veneer sandalwood boxes. In the early boxes, which date from the turn of the 18th to the 19th century, there are large panels of mosaic covering tops and sides of boxes. It took incredible skill to cover such large areas without any shakes or wavering of the pattern. The corners and joins on these boxes are impeccably matched. The makers (reputed to be Persian) of Sadeli mosaic made in the first two decades of the 19th century displayed a total understanding of the qualities of the different materials they used. They combined substances, which can expand and contract according to atmospheric conditions with others, which are hard and unyielding. The result was a sharp definition of the lines and patterns, which made up the whole design. On the early boxes the designs look deceptively simple. The fact is, they emerged from a culture, which had mastered geometry and understood how to generate a pattern from a set number of points. The patterns are so harmoniously combined that their incredible complexity is not immediately apparent. The earliest Sadeli boxes...

Presenting a gorgeous pair of Chinese Famile verte and coral tall table lamps. Mid 20th century circa 1960-80. These are Chinese export in the Famile Verte pattern famous in Canton Region of China. Beautiful detail with Courtesan’s in landscape/garden scenes. Green, white, yellow and unusual purples. The top sections and the bases plinths are coral in color and we believe are a type of cinnabar. Each has a slightly different polished coral finial. Fully working and in very good condition with no chips or cracks. These are a very desirable and imposing pair of lamps ! Provenance: From a Quality Dallas Private Collection. Condition: Very Good. PRESENTING AN ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING 19C French Empire Style Style Complete Bedroom Suite/Set. HIGHLY, IMPORTANT AND UNIQUE Empire Style Bedroom Suite or Set, in the Manner of Francois Linke (or similarly important Parisienne maker), from circa 1880. The Suite/Set is almost completely original, save the bed, which was originally twin size, but professionally commissioned to be customized and converted into a Euro King Size for modern practicality. The quality of the conversion matches the quality of the suite/set. All pieces have ormolu gilt mounted fittings; beautiful patina, beautiful parquetry; beautiful carrara marble tops, simply stunning! About 10 years ago, I saw the ‘identical twin’ of the Commode in an Antique Store on Central Park in New York, however it had a less desirable green marble top (IMHO), and they were looking for 30k USD for the Commode, on its OWN! This Suite/Set is SO GOOD that it is the main exhibit in our rear Showroom. Not marked but under the marble top of the commode there are 2 signatures in pencil (1) M. Le Youters (?) and (2) M. Daneels. You will NOT find another complete suite/set like this ANYWHERE! Presenting a gorgeous American bronze sculpture of a “Rugged Outdoorsman” bronze by Lundeen. George Wayne Lundeen (b. 1948), American Sculptor … limited Edition No 10/12 … dated 1977. Fully and properly signed and marked on the rear of the head. This is an exceptional quality bronze with exceptional detail. It features the bust/head of a bearded and rugged American Frontiersman with rope over his shoulder. It sits on a granite base. George Wayne Lundeen, American sculptor (b. 1948 -). Born in Holdrege, Nebraska, George Lundeen has become a nationally known sculptor of realistic figures. He achieved the status of full Academician of the National Academy of Design in New York, which is the highest professional recognition bestowed on visual arts in America. One of his best known pieces is the seated, life-size figure in bronze of Benjamin Franklin at the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia. He also has work at the Capital Rotunda in Washington DC. and in 2001, his sculpture Thomas Jefferson was dedicated at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Lundeen served as the 2001 Thomas Jefferson Distinguished Visiting Lecturer and participated in the unveiling of the Jefferson sculpture. Presenting an absolutely stunning and original 18C english chippendale shepherds crook armchair. Made in England circa 1780-1800 of walnut, this ‘period’ chair is simply Gorgeous in it’s Originality! It is still covered in it’s original needlepoint/tapestry upholstery with neo-classical elements of a Greek or Roman Goddess sitting holding a staff on the back splat and floral motiff’s elsewhere. What makes this piece Truly Original is the fact that the needlepoint appears to have been signed by the original owner/maker of the tapestry and it appears to be the family name of “Tancret”. The arm rests have the most glorious ‘shepherd’s crook’ twists and turns. The central base section has what appears to be heavily carved Prince of Wales Plumes, signifying the Regency Era. The knees of the 2 front legs have the most amazingly carved acanthus relief decoration and the 2 front legs end in the best example of ball and claw feet you are ever likely to see. The back legs also have some interesting detail as the feet are platformed or hooved. Overall, the piece is in great condition for it’s age and use. There are no major tears or holes in the original tapestry. There is some discoloration but that is to be expected with a piece this old. There is a very small piece of the central front medallion (bottom left as you look) missing, but it is not noticeable and does not detract from the piece. One small stain on the back.
