Presenting a fabulous 19C set of 6 Irish Chippendale style ribbon back dining chairs. Irish made circa 1840-60. We know that these are Irish due to the signature ‘hairy paw’ feet which is synonymous with Irish Georgian furniture that were made in the Chippendale Style. These are hand crafted chairs, made of mahogany, and have fabulously detailed ‘Ribbon’ backs splats with tassel, acanthus floral and bow details. All 6 have been re-upholstered by us in a gorgeous tan/light gold silk damask fabric which is beautifully sympathetic to the style and period. We are confident that these are Early to Mid 19th Century chairs for a number of reasons: (1) The are hand crafted, (2) the color/patina is what you would expect with natural aging, (3) they have evidence of historic repairs, wear and tear consistent with age, (4) when we removed the old upholstery fabric, which looked like it was done in the 1980’s, we discovered the original ‘horse hair’ cushion filling … this practice stopped in the early 20th Century. The seat webbing was also much older and needed replacing. Fabulous acanthus carving on the knees of the front legs, with curved legs leading down to the fabulously carved hairy paws. Nice indented decoration on the front of the seat. The rear legs are undecorated and curve outwards for additional support and stability. Unsigned and unmarked but undoubtedly made by a top Irish furniture maker. probably in Dublin. Condition: Each chair has been newly re-upholstered and seat webbing replaced. The original horse hair cushion filling was cleaned and incorporated into the new cushion with modern foam to create a more comfortable and uniform seat cushion, but still retaining originality. Each chair has signs of historic repairs to the ribbon back splats over the generations. This is not unusual due to the somewhat delicate nature of these types of back splats. Also, it is an indicator of true age. The chair to the back left in the main photos has had the most repairs and much more recently performed (by us) as the back splaty was broken in 2 places (but we had the original pieces) and the chair needed the insertion of metal pins to secure the repaired sections. We have provided a couple of photos of this back splat which you can see evidence of the repairs. The repairs are very professionally done and the chair is now fully functionable and usable and the repairs are not very noticeable. These repairs are reflected in the pricing, as, if these chairs were ‘mint’ they would be very valuable and expensive ! Irish furniture can be recognised by certain features, which differentiate it from its European counterparts. The Irish style of furniture is said to have been lagging behind in fashion compared to English equivalent by a number of years, in both its design and manner by which the furniture was manufactured. A defining feature of the mid-eighteenth-century furniture is the carving on different parts of the furniture such as the aprons, blanket chests, bottle-stands and such objects. The carvings included foliated details, baskets of flowers and scallop shells, which are some of the most prominent carvings that are represented on Irish furniture at this time. A few of the Irish makers of these objects were James Hicks, Arthur Jones, William Moore, Mack & Gibton and Robert Strahan. All though individuals would have been the most prominent at the time of the 18th century and early 19th century but there are any other cabinet makers as well. Not all Irish furniture was detailed with such wonderful carvings and some might have been seen to be rather plain. One of the most identifiable items that are described as plain is the Irish Hunt Table, its simple elegance comprising of with straight plain legs. It was most commonly used in the dining room of a rural house such as a agents house or large house of a land holder. Another very popular and simply designed piece was the Irish Silver table, its design is very elegant and yet individual partially owing to the shell motive. Other examples of such Irish tables are side tables which have a distinctive double scrolled leg. Usually legs are carved with acanthus and have paw feet which are quite popular in Ireland but more rare in England. Other features are the inside leg which is carved with elongated C-scroll. The triple scroll on the leg was common place. Some cabinet makers and creativity was really captured with their side tables in how the carving was done. This carving may include Jupiters eagle or Lion mask and flanked Swags of flowers. In other furniture such as chairs, the H-shaped serpentine stretcher was popular in the 18th century in Ireland and when English chairs had moved forward in their design the Irish makers were still using the H-shaped serpentine. There was certainly an overlap between Irish and English furniture, one can see that Irish cabinet makers used English pattern books but used Irish features such as the carvings as the shell, baskets of flowers and foliated details. Another unique feature in Irish cabinet making was Killarney ware...

PRESENTING a simply beautiful, monumental and imposing original work of contemporary art, namely, a Triptych oil on canvas panels of New Orleans Colonial/French Quarter Houses. Unsigned and undated, but most definitely inspired by the World Renowned New Orleans artist, James Michalopoulos. These were not painted by Michalopoulos, but were clearly inspired by him and his famous depictions of ‘wavey’ New Orleans houses. Also, they were created and painted in New Orleans, contemporaneously to when Michalopoulos was starting to become recognized, in the New Orleans (and greater) artworld. The 3 panels work perfectly together as a visual feast and ‘connected’ work of art. The panel on the left features a wavy blue, grey and yellow, French Quarter style 2 Story Wooden house, complete with Corinthian Style Columns, decks, railings, storm shuttered windows, etc. It has a deep blue sky with shimmering light reflections. The garden to the front, has steps leading to the house and has shrubs and flowers, that are continued into the 2nd or middle/center panel. The middle or center panel incorporates the other side of the garden plants etc for continuity and it features a single story pink, yellow and white wavy French Quarter style house, with fabulous decor and complete with decks, railings, storm shuttered windows, etc. It has a deep blue sky with shimmering light reflections and a white moon, emitting swirling patterns of light. The garden to the front, has steps leading to the house and has shrubs and flowers, that are continued into the 3rd or right panel. The right panel, features a wavy light...

Presenting a lovely vintage gold and brass 4 light lantern from circa 1955. Lovely restored Moe Lighting Lantern from circa 1955. Made in the U.S.A. 4 bulb Lantern in full functional condition and sympathetically restored to its original beauty. The Lantern is gilt metal and brass and is covered in gold leaf. It has been recently re-gilted. The top finial of the lantern is beautifully cast with scrolling arms and handles. There are 5 glass panels edged in brass. The interior working bulb platform is on a tilt central column or lever that tilts with the movement of the lantern in the wind. Both the top and bottom parts of the lantern have a pierced gallery and the base has a removeable plate with a final to access the bulbs on the interior. The interior has a label hidden from view under the bulb base (see photos) confirming that the Lantern was made by Moe Light of Fort Atkinson Wisconsin a Division of Thomas Industries. This helps us date the piece as Moe Lighting was acquired by Thomas Industries in 1953. We are of the opinion that this piece date from the mid 1950’s. A beautiful addition to any home of style !! Thomas Industries was formed in a 1953 merger of two companies–a lighting fixture manufacturer and the maker of electrical spraying machines–both of which came into being in the late 1920s. The unlikely marriage of these two product lines was the cornerstone of what would become the company’s two core businesses: lighting fixtures and air compressors/pumps. The lighting fixture side of Thomas Industries traces its history back to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and two brothers: Henrik and Ole Moe. The Moe Brothers, together with a number of other entrepreneurs, owned the Moe-Bridges Co., a lighting fixture manufacturer formed in 1919. As a result of friction among the Moe-Bridges management, however, the Moe brothers were frozen out of the company in the late 1920s by the majority owners. Deciding to stay with the industry they knew, the Moes formed another lighting fixture company called Moe Brothers Manufacturing. Henrik’s two sons joined the business in the early 1930s, and in 1938, the company moved its operations from Milwaukee to Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. While the Moe brothers were building their lighting fixture business, the Electric Sprayit Company–the forerunner to Thomas Industries’ compressor and pump division–was also testing its wings. In 1928, the Electric Sprayit Company was formed in Chicago “to manufacture, buy, and sell electrical spraying machines, blowers, air compressors, mechanical, and mercantile devices.” In a curious twist of fate, in 1934 the Electric Sprayit Company acquired Moe-Bridges, the company that had forced out the Moe brothers, and moved from Chicago into the Moe-Bridges plant in Milwaukee. In 1939, Electric Sprayit moved its operations again, this time to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. During World War II, both companies stopped making their standard product lines in order to produce materials for the war effort. At the close of the war, in 1946, Moe Brothers received a large contract from Sears to produce household pressure cookers. Although the company had not previously manufactured pressure cookers, the large stamping presses they had obtained for the war gave them the production capabilities for the job. The brothers planned to use sales revenues from the pressure cooker contract to return to the lighting fixture business. Unfortunately, Sears rescinded the company’s contract due to a product malfunction. In the aftermath of the contract loss, pressured by the bank to repay existing debt, the Moe brothers decided to sell the company. Moe Brothers was purchased in 1948 by a Louisville investment group headed by Lee Thomas. Thomas, the former president of Ekco Products in Chicago, had recently purchased a small saw business in Louisville and was looking for further investment opportunities. His new purchase was renamed Moe Light, and a national advertising campaign was launched to promote residential lighting fixtures. Another stunning 19th century Anglo-Ceylonese piece. Made circa 1880 in Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka) of Coromandel wood and specimen woods. This is a simply gorgeous and quality item!! Tray made of various compartments with various high quality specimen wood lids, all edged and banded in chevrons of bone, silver or pewter and ebony. The tray itself is made of expensive coromandel wood. There are two open sections on either side of the tray which have bone and hand-painted lac ends. The main tray sits onto a base made of coromandel wood with green baize lining. This tray could have a number of practical uses, for keeping stationary, watches, jewelry, or thinking outside of the box, holding you remote controls and candy!! With it’s original White House envelope, stamp and postage marks. Dated June 14th 1907. What makes this letter so important is the author, the office and the content. It refers to the beliefs and opinions of the then President and First Lady (Edith) towards the women’s sufferage and empowerment movement that was the ‘hot topic’ of the time. It is addressed to Eliza Calvert Obenchain who was a well known author at the end of the 19th Century and Early 20th Century. Presenting an absolutely gorgeous Queen Anne Style pedestal desk. Made of walnut, butterflied walnut, burl walnut and oyster wood, the veneers on this piece are STUNNING ! Made in England at the end of the 19th Century (circa 1890) this is a stunning replica of an original Queen Anne piece from the late 17th/early 18th Century ! The attention to detail is outstanding from the use of the correct period veneers, right down to the banding and parquetry inlays, to the hardware. It is a diminutive desk as it should be as desk from the Queen Anne period were much, much smaller than desks made today due to the fact that in the 17/18th Century people were much smaller. It consists of 2 pedestals with 2 drawers on each pedestal facing to the front, and 2 doors that open to a single shelf on the other side. The removeable top has 3 working drawers to the front only. It has a fabulous distressed and aged brown leather insert on the top in an oval/floret shape. It sits on 4 curved padded feet. Not marked but obviously made by a top, top maker ! This desk was acquired and owned by a Mr. Jim Quist a well known businessman and high society character in Dallas, who resided at Swiss Ave., Dallas until his death in 2020. Provenance: From the Quist Estate in Dallas Condition: Very good original condition. The 2 teardrop pulls on the front center drawer are later replacements but compliment the period and style. Some very minor veneer repairs, professionally touched up. No keys. Dimensions: 29 inches tall, 54 inches wide and 33 inches deep. Kneehole Clearance 23.5 inches tall and 18.5 inches wide. Presenting an absolutely stunning 19c Anglo Ceylonese sewing box of museum quality. Made in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) circa 1860, this is one of the finest sewing boxes of it’s kind that we have ever seen! The box is made from coromandel wood (an exotic hardwood found in Ceylon) and has a serpentine edging all over the front, back and sides. Very often the lids/tops of these boxes suffer cracks due to shrinkage but this one is near perfect with no crack in the lid/top. There is some evidence of natural shrinkage but that is around the edges of the lid/top. It is when you open this box that it reveals it’s true beauty, quality and treasure ! The inside of the lid/top is heavily and beautifully decorated with inlaid bone in scrolling floral patterns which have then been hand painted with red and black ‘lac’ ink. The central medallion is a circle of inlaid specimen exotic hardwoods radiating towards a central bone and hand painted flower. The circle is edged in bone, wood and silver chevrons. What makes this box Exceptionally rare is that it contains 3 lift out base sections. Normally, there would be a maximum of 2. The first tray/section is clearly for the purposes ancillary to sewing with a pair of sections with bone spools for thread etc. There are 17 other lidded compartments with each one highly decorated using hand painted bone and specimen woods to replicate tortoiseshell. The first tray lifts out to reveal a second removeable tray which is made up of a pair of open sections and 8 specimen wood lidded sections each with chevron banding. The third tray is a smaller tray underneath with 14 lidded compartments each with hand painted bone and specimen wood inlaid lids again, replicating the look of tortoiseshell. Again they are banded with a chevron border. This is a museum quality piece ! It is in fantastic condition for it’s age with the minor shrinkage to the edges of the lid/top, some finger pulls missing and some very minor cracks to the tray lids and bases but nothing that in any way detracts from the piece. No key. They were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the nineteenth century they were imported more commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the middle decades. They were very highly valued, especially the early ones, to the extent that the designs were copied on late 19th and early 20th century tins. Anglo-Indian boxes normally consist of 3 main types:- (1) Most of the best and highest quality Anglo-Indian boxes in the 18th and 19th centuries were made in Vizagapatam, India, renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship in using ivory and tortoiseshell and lac decoration. Presenting a gorgeous pair of Chinese Famile verte and coral tall table lamps. Mid 20th century circa 1960-80. These are Chinese export in the Famile Verte pattern famous in Canton Region of China. Beautiful detail with Courtesan’s in landscape/garden scenes. Green, white, yellow and unusual purples. The top sections and the bases plinths are coral in color and we believe are a type of cinnabar. Each has a slightly different polished coral finial.
