The ‘Entente Cordial’ silver champagne cooler for the British Motor Boat Club, 1905. This deep cylindrical bowl by Charles Townley and John Thomas is of heavy gauge with a raised circular foot, two acanthus scroll handles and cut-card acanthus leaves around the base. The inscription on the silver reads ‘The “Entente Cordial” Cup Presented to the British Motor Boat Club by Mrs Walker Munroe, 1905, won by 1905 Aug 7 “Napier II” J. Scott Montagu, Lionel de Rothschild, 1906 Aug 6 ‘Yarrow Napier’ Lionel de Rothschild.’ Assayed for Charles Townley and John Thomas, London 1904, retailed by F B Thomas & Co. Provenance: Lionel de Rothschild, Exbury and J Scott Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu Edmund de Rothschild, Exbury. The ‘Entente Cordiale Cup’ was the prize at the club’s race meeting at Burnham on Crouch in August 1905 in honour of a visit from the French Navy. Lionel and John had great success in the new Napier II and Achillée millefeuille Napier motor boats. The Napier II was fitted with the largest six-cylinder engine ever built by Selwyn Edge. In 1905 the pair won a 35 mile race across the Arcachon basin, France, in a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, 26 seconds. The following year they broke Dorothy Levitt’s world water speed record at 28.8 knots and in 1907 won the prestigious ‘Perla del Mediterraneo’ on Lionel’s boat, the ‘Flying Fish’. This silver presentation vase is a small replica of the classical Roman ‘Warwick Vase’. The body is cast and chased with fruiting vines below the rim. The central field has a continuous band with bearded Bacchic heads floating above a lion’s mask and pelt. The applied handles comprise gnarled twisted vine stems. The spreading stem is set on a square foot which in turn sits on an ebonised wooden plinth base. The plinth is applied with two vacant laurel wreath cartouches and two rectangular plaques, one finely engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms and the other inscribed “Plymouth, Devonport and Cornwall Races 1845, the gift of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, Augustus Coryton Esqr, W. R. Fortescue Esqr, Stewards” and “Her Majesty’s Vase, value 100gs., for three-year-old and upwards – Heats, about two miles, starting at the T.Y.C. Starting-post, once round, to the Grand Stand Winning-post.” Fully marked and stamped on the side of the foot ‘Hunt & Roskell Late Storr & Mortimer 2225’. English, assayed for London 1845. Collier, Commander of His Majestys Sloop ‘Victor’, for his persevering & gallant conduct in chasing for two days, partially engaging & ultimately sinking the French National Corvette ‘La Fleche’ of superior force while advantageously anchored at the Mahé Islands.’ Dimensions approx.: 150 x 290 x 200mm / 6 x 11 ½ x 8 inches Total weight approx.: 3513 grams / 112 oz. troy. Footnotes: These silver dishes were presented to Captain Sir George Collier KCB (1774-1824) for destroying the 22-gun French corvette La Flèche whilst commanding Victor, 18 guns, in the Seychelles on 5 September 1801. After escorting troop transports into the Red Sea ahead of the British invasion of Egypt, Victor fell in with La Flèche off Diego Garcia. After an initial engagement, the corvette escaped to windward only to be found again four days later. A short but fierce action ensued during which the corvette caught fire, grounded on a coral reef and sank before a prize crew could secure the ship. As reward, the Admiralty made Collier post captain and gave him command of Leopard, 50 guns. Born in London, Collier entered the Royal Navy in 1784. As a midshipman, he was wrecked off Madagascar in 1792 surviving among the natives of that island for six months before being rescued by a passing Portuguese brig. Unfortunately, the brig was immediately captured by a French privateer and for two more years, Collier was confined as a prisoner of war on Mauritius. Returning to service in 1795, he was given his first command in Suffolk Tender. Following the Peace of Amiens, Collier commanded the Sea Fencibles at Liverpool. After accompanying the expedition to Copenhagen in 1808, for which he was knighted for delivering the admiral’s dispatches, he saw action, and was wounded, supporting the military Campaign in Spain. After the war, Collier was made commodore on the African station where he was employed suppressing the slave trade with such rigour that he was elected an honorary member of the African Institution, founded by William Wilberforce...

Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other. Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. This small oval George III silver salver is raised on four scroll feet with a plain field and curvetto within a triple reed border. The reverse is engraved ‘June 18th 1803 Valentine Munden’s Prize Money when on board the Exeter East Indiaman for the Capture of the French Frigate La Medée.’ Maker’s mark of John Crouch & Thomas Hannam, London 1792. The naval action took place on the 4th of August 1800 off the coast of Brazil. On that morning, the Royal Navy escort, Belliqueux sighted a squadron of French frigates and, giving chase, captured the largest ship La Concorde whilst the East Indiamen, Exeter and Bombay Castle pursued and took the surrender of La Medée. The Coutts and Neptune were unsuccessful in capturing a third frigate La Franchaise, but the action stands out as the only occasion during the Napoleonic Wars when a merchant vessel captured a French ship of war...

Michael Bang (1942-2013) Current And Advanced Glassmaking Art Michael Bang (1942-2013) was the son of Jacob E. Bang, Holmegaard's first designer. In the 1960s and 1970s, Michael Bang was a designer at the Odense Glass Factory, but moved with his family to Holmegaard in the 1980s when he joined the Holmegaard Glass Factory. Here he managed the design of the mouth-blown lamps in opal-white glass in which the glass factory specialised. Michael Bang was quick-witted, fascinating and fun and able to spellbind an audience when the glass factory organised talks and presentations. Many of his products have now become collector's items.
