Francesco Coppola Castaldo
Italian Impressionist Oil on Board Marine Landscape Painting Naples Bay View

Late 19th Century

About the Item

Everyday fishermen life is captured in this wonderful Italian impressionist late 19th century oil painting on thin board titled fishermen ashore. We love the neutral and natural color palette the painter used to photograph a moment of daily life in a seaside village in the bay of Naples and the wonderful texture. The marine landscape fills us with calm, numerous shades of blue, gray, green and brown are painted with strong brushstrokes that give this view a wonderful texture, lively and compact at the same time. The painting is very realistic but the painter manages to immerse the viewer in an evocative and romantic atmosphere with late afternoon light reflecting on the sea and the autumnal tones fine touches of white gouache pick out the light. The fishermen seem to have ended their fishing day, some are untangling their nets and others are taking care of their boats the landscape is dominated by Vesuvius in the background surrounding the bay. The painting is housed in a fine walnut molded and parcel gilt frame. Signed 'F Coppola Castaldo' low left . There he knew his companions Stanislao Sidoti and Gustavo Mancinelli, son of one of his professor. Very early and very prolific, he made his debut at the "Salvator Rosa" Promoter in Naples in 1863, maintaining a continuous participation, up to the 1911 exhibition. He preferably painted in oil, tempera or gouache and was a renowned landscape painter. He taught painting at the municipal high school of Naples and was also an honorary professor at the Academy where he had studied. His works "Un boschetto", "At the decline of the day" and "On the shore of the sea", exhibited at the exhibitions of the Promoter of 1872, 1877 and 1881, were purchased by the Kings of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I. The painter's favorite subjects were views of Naples and neighboring areas, rural scenes and more rarely scenes of religious subjects, inspired by the work of Morelli whose studio he frequented. In addition to the exhibitions of the Neapolitan Promoter, it exhibits an exhibition in Genoa, Milan, Turin, Rome and Florence. In 1870 he participated - together with other painters active in Naples, including Giuseppe Boschetto, Camillo Miola, Giuseppe De Nigris - in the German Gallery of New Bond Street in London, with two works: "A scene near Naples" and "An Afternoon " NOTE: Export papers have to be issued to ship this item outside Italy, the process lasts about 40 days.

This romantic French 19th century allegoric oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...

  • Dans le parc en automne, Paris (In the Park in Autumn, Paris)
    By Jean Francois Raffaëlli
    Located in New Orleans, LA
This thoroughly modern Parisian scene was composed by the celebrated French painter Jean François Raffaëlli. The delicate oil captures a familiar subject from late 19th-century life in the city: a busy avenue at the edge of a park on a cool autumn day. Exploring the climate of the city, Raffaëlli's mature works capture the energy of the grand parks and boulevards of the new Paris that emerged at the turn of the century. His legacy documents the realities of urban life during his age, all chronicled in his distinctive brushwork and sophisticated palette. While Raffaëlli was never fully accepted as a member of the Impressionist group, his works display a similar affinity for capturing the transient moments of modern life. His figures exude a sense of being suspended in time, as though they are part of some subtle narrative that is both restless and harmonious. Perhaps more aligned with Naturalism than Impressionism, the visual effect of Raffaëlli's composition is one of carefully composed spontaneity that makes manifest the joie de vivre of the age. Raffaëlli was not the only artist of his era to devote his canvases to the urban landscape. Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Gustave Caillebotte and others composed significant works on the subject of the urban milieu. On the whole, it was an entirely new kind of painting, and it was largely influenced by the work of social engineer Baron Haussmann beginning in the 1850s. At the request of Emperor Napoleon III, Haussmann designed and carried out a large-scale urban renewal program, erecting landmarks and tree-lined thoroughfares throughout the city to create a unified and socially-centered urban aesthetic. The city became a glittering stage for modern advancements and bourgeois pleasure, which paved the way for a new kind of subject that was eagerly adopted by the Impressionists and artistic avant-garde. Born in Paris in 1850, Raffaëlli first studied theater and music before turning to painting in 1870. That same year, he submitted a landscape painting to the Salon and was accepted. Aside from just three months studying with the Academic great Jean-Léon Gérôme, Raffaëlli was self-trained, developing his own unique style that brought together Realism, Naturalism and Impressionism. While he managed to exhibit works at both the Salon and the Impressionist exhibitions...
