Paul Charles Emmanuel Gallard-Lepinay
Venetian Coast

19th century

About the Item

French 19th century oil on canvas painting by Paul Charles Emmanuel Gallard-Lepinay (1842-1885), is of ships on the Venetian coast. Gallard-Lepinay is renowned for his maritime work, most notably Venice but also the French coast of Marseilles and Antibes, and Algiers. Gallard-Lepinay exhibited in the famous Paris Salon from 1864 through 1884, and served as the painter to the Marine Ministry of France. His work is impressionistic, but also demonstrates fine drawing skills more admired by the Salon peers. His work can be seen in Museums in France and also the Rijksmuseum in Holland. This fine work is impressive in size and scope, with tall ship in the background, sailings ship with intricate rope and net treatment, and rowboat on the edge of the lagoon. Water reflections are particularly lovely. This impressionist style work was done during the French impressionist period in 1860s to 1880s France. Gallard Lepinay lived and died in Paris, and though his life was short, the time he flourished was in the original impressionism era. The sight inside the liner is nearly 24" high and 33" wide. The frame is almost 3 inches wide on all four sides. Framed size is nearly 39" wide, and almost 30" high. The painting is presented in its likely original gilt liner, however the frame is later 20th century. Labels on the back indicate it was re-framed in 1986 with wooden gilt framing. Stable craquelure consistent with age is evident, and the painting may have been lined. However no surface restoration is noted. The painting and frame are in overall very good condition, ready to be hung.

Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, is a Monet-like image of a Scottish bridge in Balquhidder, the Clan homeland of McLaren in central Scotland. Dated 1995 (verso) and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the painting is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Kirkton Bridge' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. By Alfred de Breanski Jnr.
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
Landscape painting of The Trossachs, Scottish Highlands, 20th century is after renowned landscape artist Alfred De Breanski, Jnr, (1877-1955). As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr. This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water. De Breanski studied at St Martins School of Art, England, but had the benefit of his father, his mother and his Uncle who were all successful artists of their time, and their work continues to be highly sought after for the detail and light captured in plein art...
