ABOUT THIS WORK Pauzen’s suite of six etchings 'Das Lied von der Erde' (The Song of the Earth), published in 1920, was inspired by Gustav Mahler’s 1909 composition of the same name. Mahler’s work, described as a symphony when published, comprises six songs for two singers who alternate movements. Pauzen created an etching depicting the theme of each of the six songs. ABOUT THE ARTIST Arthur Paunzen was born in 1890 in Vienna, where he made his career as a printmaker. His initial success came in 1915 with an exhibition organized by Halm & Goldmann, for which he received the Legion of Honor for Vienna. In 1927 he exhibited in the 21st Annual Austrian Federal Art Exhibition. Paunzen’s reputation as a printmaker was further distinguished by two print series of six etchings each, entitled 'Fantasies on Beethoven’s Symphonies', 1918 and 'Song of the Earth', 1920, inspired by Mahler. His work is represented in the permanent collections of The Albertina Museum, Vienna; The Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin; British Museum, London; and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

ABOUT THIS WORK The French economy boomed from 1921 until the Great Depression reached Paris in 1931. This period called 'Les années folles' or the 'Crazy Years', saw Paris reestablished as a capital of art, music, literature, and cinema. Paris in the 1920s and 1930s was the home and meeting place of some of the world's most prominent painters, sculptors, composers, dancers, poets, and writers. For those in the arts, it was, as Ernest Hemingway described it, "A moveable feast". Paris was home to an exceptional number of galleries, art dealers, and a network of wealthy patrons who offered commissions and held salons. Pablo Picasso, perhaps the most famous artist in Paris, shared renown with a remarkable group of others, including the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, the Belgian René Magritte, the Italian Amedeo Modigliani, the Russian émigré Marc Chagall, the Catalan and Spanish artists Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Juan Gris, and the German surrealist...

PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) Spanish painter and sculptor is one of the most recognized figures of twentieth century art. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works using all kinds of mediums. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of his time. First famous for pioneering cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical idea, and might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes. ABOUT SELLER DO YOU HAVE ARTWORK TO SELL?
