Countryside is a lithograph realized by Hans Erni, in the 1960s.
Two men, seated side by side, probably refresh themselves in a moment of rest from work in the fields.

Hans Erni (1909-2015) . He Undertook technical studies, but after his first encounter with art literature in 1927, he set out to study art in Lucerne. He studied in Berlin and Paris, where he had the opportunity to associate with artists who would mark his artistic
evolution: Kandinsky, Mondrian, Brancusi, Calder and, in particular, Georges Braque and Picasso. The influence of the latter on his graphic trait was such as to earn him the nickname of Swiss Picasso.
He followed a period of travel to Belgium, Italy and, in the late 1930s, London where he encountered abstract art. Here he frequented the painter Ben Nicholson and the sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, among the leading exponents of English
abstract art. From 1930 to 1934 he worked under the pseudonym François Grèque. He was one of the founders of the abstract art group Allianz. In 1950 he made his first pottery.
In the 1950s he worked for UNESCO and the World Health Organization. For the Principality of Liechtenstein he designed two series of stamps: "Winter Olympics" and "Summer Olympics". He also produced other sets of stamps for the United Nations and the
Swiss Post, as well as numerous portraits of celebrities, such as Albert Einstein.
On December 23, 1976, the Hans Erni Foundation was established which promotes exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events. since 1981 the foundation has supported the "Panta rei" series of conferences, with the aim of communicating to men the
knowledge of a world in constant transformation. On September 15, 1979, the Hans Erni Museum at the Swiss Museum of Transport was opened in Lucerne. The Auditorium is decorated with a large wall painting by the Swiss artist, also entitled "Panta rei".
Having lived through two wars has led him to develop a remarkable sensitivity for the issues of peace and social rights. He is Emeritus Academician of the Academy of Design Arts in Florence.
In Italy you can admire a large lava ceramic, Pegasus, made by Erni in 2005 for the open-air museum of Étroubles (Aosta). To celebrate his 100th birthday, the Fondation Gianadda in Martigny dedicated an exhibition to him, open until 1 March 2009.
From 18 June to 18 September 2011, the Étroubles exhibition center hosted a retrospective with 50 works created from 1940 to 2010 from Hans Erni Museum in Lucerne, from the collection of the Fondation Gianadda in Martigny and from private collections.
He died on March 21, 2015 in the Hirslanden St. Anna Clinic in Lucerne at the age of 106.

Hans Erni
Hans Erni attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Lucerne in 1927–28, which was followed by further stays in Paris and Berlin. In 1933–34, he joined the artist's group Abstraction-Création in Paris, where he also met artists like Hans Arp, Alexander Calder and Wassily Kandinsky. In the 1930–40s, Erni was very successful with fresco painting, a medium the artist deeply preferred because of its impact on society. In 1950, he created his first ceramic works and discovered lithography as another central technique of his future artistic output. In 1972, Erni set up his studio in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, but he continued to be active in Lucerne, where he was born and obtained personal museum spaces. He was awarded numerous prizes, including the UN Peace Medal Award. His works have been internationally exhibited, including shows in Chicago, New Delhi, Funabashi and Milan. Erni’s artistic output comprises, for instance, around 300 posters, numerous frescoes, around 200 illustrations for books, drawings and various designs for approximately 90 stamps.

Inspiration or L'inspiré - The artist and his wife, self-portrait.
This is a self-portrait of the great artist, depicting him as lost in thought before one of his paintings, which is apparently related to his home country Russia, as suggested by the small figure in the lower right of the work. Chagall’s wife Valentina (“Vava”), who was also from Russia, is looking over his shoulder, full of longing. The small surreal elements that are characteristic of Chagall’s paintings are also present here: the silhouettes of the houses that seems to stick out of the painting and a figure with a flute or trombone standing on its head.
