About the Item

This vibrant Folk Art Limited Edition Print made from a painting on board is by the fabulous British Canadian artist Nancy Patterson. It comes from her series ‘Days in the Desert Sun, Nights Under the Magical Moon’, a compelling set of works in the Folk idiom made by Nancy about her life on the edge of the Desert in Southern Morocco. The images tell the narratives, the tales of the community that over the past eighteen years she has become part of. Nancy's bio which can be accessed Artwork details: Nancy Patterson, First Visitors at Dar Sidi, lithographic print, Edition 1 of 20, unframed 24 cm x 37cm, 2006. Initialled in the print on the front, signed on the back. Provenance, directly from the artist studio. Condition: in excellent condition. There is something very comforting about the term Folk Art, derived from the idea that a work of art is firmly rooted in the community it depicts. Folk Art can initiate feelings of splendid joy. It is often misjudged as holding less regard that some of its fine-art cousins but we need look no further than the fabulous British artist Alfred Wallis or the captivating Canadian painter Maud Lewis to understand that Folk Art can be just as complex in its formal arrangements, compositions and choice of colour palette. Another myth, possibly by those who could not explain the beauty in the Folk Art form, is that this type of art is the sole premise of artists who have had no formal training. This image is typical of the artists work, narrative and with just the right amount of humour to initiate a smile in the viewer. In Nancy’s own words, 'Dar Sidi Bounou opened in the autumn of 2005. Five friends were the first guests- from the left, Ortrud a German woman who had a beautiful Riad in Marrakesh, next to her, Me, then Annie, Wendy, Amanda and Malkit from Norfolk. The mains water was not connected until a few hours before they arrived, but almost everything else was ready, especially the kitchen. We had a lavish feast and the local Rakba group from Ouled Driss for entertainment and next day we went for a camel ride. Daoud had a new phone which kept him occupied when he was not cooking. He is on the left, and on the right, possibly talking to himself.' Please see the artist’s biography for more information and do feel free to contact us if you would like more details or images.

  • Abstract Landscape Indian Art Edition 3/5 Linocut Print Nature Orange Australia
    By Mukesh Sharma
    Located in Norfolk, GB
There is a natural and raw understanding in Mukesh Sharma’s prints that both depict, and are influenced by, the Rajastani communities of his home town in rural India. In these Limited Edition fine-art prints, made over a period of twenty years, we are offered the colours of India’s ancient land, the textures, light and the patterns that are everywhere. In the patterns of the arable fields to the jali's (carved screens) in the architecture. This work is however not romantic nor nostalgic but shows a deeper rooted need to offer a visual heritage of place, of where the artist is from and the journey that he is taking. The results are both compelling and honest. Mukesh Sharma, Jetty 1, Lino-cut chin- coll’e on German Ivory paper Edition: 3 of 5, 2005 Image size: 50 x 33 cm / Sheet size: 79 x 55 cm Unframed ''What mesmerised me was the meeting of the sea and the mountain peak. Where the Jetty, a special curved wooden staircase leading to one end and the deep crystal clear sea at a distance. These scenes were amazing to me." Mukesh Sharma's work: It is often in childhood that paths are set for what we will become. Mukesh Sharma hails from a rural, agricultural village in Rajasthan, India. His Father is a craftsman who fixed and mended farm machinery and understood the working parts in the processes. Sharma followed in his Father’s footsteps, as is often the case in Indian families, but his was not the machines of the fields but the presses of the printing studio. Like his Father, Mukesh Sharma is fascinated with understanding how things work and how he can manipulate the metal in his hands. It is not surprising then that his medium of choice is printing. One of the most physically challenging of all the practices, it can often be physically challenging as well as technical and detailed. In his youth, Sharma would draw with stones on walls and floors. He was lucky his family encouraged this and he is grateful for his early art-training at the Jaipur School of Art but it was at the Baroda Art Department that he was introduced to the great printing traditions of Jyoti Bhatt...
