Biography:
Léonard Agathon Van Weydeveldt, said Agathon Léonard (1841-1923) was a sculptor of Belgian origin naturalized French. After studying art at the Lille Academy of Fine Arts and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Agathon Léonard settled in Paris for a long time, where after having exhibited at the Salon of 1868, he joined the Society of French artists in 1887, then to the National Society of Fine Arts in 1897. Very involved in the artistic movement of the Art Nouveau style, he exhibited many pieces (medallions, bronze statuettes and ceramics) finely worked.
Following an order from the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, dating from 1898, Agathon Léonard exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris his famous table centerpiece "Game of the scarf" in porcelain biscuit, composed of fifteen statuettes representing dancers with pleated dresses reminiscent of Loïe Fuller's choreographies or Neo-Greek dancers...

Antique Bronze Dog Portrait of a Cavalier King Charles
"Thigley"

Lost wax bronze casting
Circa 1910
5 7/8 x 9 x 3 1/4
A sophisticated bronze casting of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel made in lost wax casting (cire perdue) from the beginning of the 20th century by Valsuani Foundry. This an unusual bronze approached in its aesthetic that’s reminiscent of the work of great animal sculptors of the second half of the 19th century except in this presentation which is more avant-garde for the time with a much looser, more impressionistic execution. The patina is a superb bronze color, brown and slightly greenish, going in places towards a more antique green.
The attitude of the dog is extremely well and sensitively rendered with the placement of material unlike the renderings of a bronze by Barye...

Discord - Inkwell
Located in Roma, RM
Artist: Giovanni Battista Alloati
Title: Discord - Inkwell
Medium: bronze sculpture with marble base
Signature: signed on the right side “G. B. Alloati”
Titled in the centre “La Discordia”
On the back stamp of the “Fonderia opera d’Arte Betta Corrado – Torino”
The Discordia - Inkwell by Giovanni Battista Alloati is a decorative object that skilfully combines the allegorical dimension with the Secessionist treatment of volumes and lines. this sculpture presents the typical traits of Art Nouveau language, accompanied by Symbolist accents that can be seen in the sinuous handling of the bodies and in the uncanny rendering of the personification of Discordia, with its characteristic snake-shaped hair.
Giovanni Battista Alloati is also known as a skilful portraitist of illustrious personalities of early 20th century Italy. In 1911 he was among the artists involved in the creation of statues of athletes for the Turin Stadium, while in the post-war period, the sinuous secessionist line gradually disappeared in favour of a balanced return to order.

Medusa and Andromeda
By Magdeburger Kunstwerkstatten Reps and Trinte
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Medusa and Andromeda, is a unique three dimensional terra cotta sculpture/vase, created by the German firm Magdeburger Kunstwerkstatten, Reps and Trinte, a studio that specialized in fine works in terra cotta.
This monumental piece depicts the entire story of the Medusa, who holds Andromeda captive by chaining her to rocks in the ocean. You can see the chains at her wrists and ankles. Medusa charges the Leviathan (dragon) as guard over the captive Andromeda. Andromeda was rescued by her future husband Perseus who killed the dragon and saved his future bride.
This is one of the most unique works of its kind that has been seen to date. It was probably a sculpture/vase designed and created for presentation at one of the yearly Salon exhibitions in Europe. We have consulted experts in European ceramics...

Foundry Mark "Susse Freres"
Originally modeled in white biscuit porcelain this Greek dancer is a from a set of eight created for a dining table. They were immediately successful when they were exhibited in the Sevres pavilion at the 1900 Exhibition. Individual figures could be ordered and "La Cothurne" proved the most popular. Their success led to the firm of Susse buying the right to cast versions in metal.
Agathon Leonard (1841-1923) is one of the well-known French Art Nouveau sculptors. Born in Lille in 1841, he first studied there before moving to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Eugene Delaplanche.
He gained recognition at the annual Expositiones Universelles, winning a Silver Medal there in 1889 and gold in 1900. His most important piece, Jeu L'echarpe, was the best known series of Sevres production at the turn of the century and sold out at the 1900 Expo in Paris and later was given as a gift by the French Gov't to Nicholas II at the Hermitage.
His bronzes were cast at the Susse Freres Editeurs Foundry. He worked also in marble, quartz and ivory. He also produced Art Nouveau medallions...
