Richard Beer Art

British, b. 1928

Born in London in 1928, just too late to serve in the Second World War, Richard Beer studied between 1945–50 at the UCL Slade School of Fine Art. Subsequently, a French Government scholarship allowed him to spend time in Paris at Atelier 17, working under Stanley William Hayter, one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th Century, he only returned to Paris in 1950. Subsequently, Beer studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Working for John Cranko, choreographer for the Royal Ballet, Beer designed the sets and costumes for his The Lady and the Fool at Covent Garden, subsequently working for him following his move in 1961 to Stuttgart Ballet. Additionally, he produced book illustrations and designed book jackets. Beer taught printmaking at the Chelsea School of Art, where he was a popular teacher. Probably his greatest work was a collaboration with John Betjeman to produce a portfolio of prints of 10 Churches of Sir Christopher Wren in London for Editions Alecto, copies of which are in the Government Art Collection. That collection contains a total of 54 prints by Beer, and the Tate Gallery’s collection holds 7. His Oxford series was also produced for Editions Alecto as was a series of predominantly architectural views in Southern Europe. Most of his prints are of architectural subjects, where he explores the use of color in interesting fashions.

A fine, richly-inked impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Chichicastenango, also known as Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, is a town in the El Quiché department of Guatemala, located in a mountainous region about 140 km northwest of Guatemala City. Chichicastenango is a K'iche' Maya cultural center, with the great majority of the municipality's population indigenous Mayan K'iche. The church depicted is the 400-year-old church Iglesia de Santo Tomás. Built atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, the steps which remain venerated today, originally led to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization. K'iche' Maya priests still use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year. ABOUT THE ARTIST Jesse Floyd Reed (1920-2011) studied art in New York City at the Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students’ League. He held degrees in History and English and completed special advance studies in Asian, African, and Latin American art, history and culture. At the time of his retirement, he was a Professor of the Arts Emeritus at Davis & Elkins College, a position he held for over forty-nine years. A nationally recognized artist since 1947, Professor Reed’s art has been shown in hundreds of museums, libraries, colleges, and universities, including the Boston Museum, National Museum, The Library of Congress, Brooklyn Museum, and Seattle Museum. In his native West Virginia, he is represented in the permanent collections of the Huntington Museum and the Charleston Museum at Sunrise. April Gornik (American, b. 1953) Cascading Waterfall, 1998, Soft ground etching and spit bite aquatint, hand signed, titled and dated '98 in pencil. Sheet dimensions: 22 x 30 in. Cascading Waterfall, is an etching and aquatint on copper plate, printed on Arches paper. Its image dimensions are 14 3/4 by 23 1/2 inches. It is included in the collection of the Museum of Art, MoMA NYC. Commissioned by the print club of Cleveland, Ohio. April Gornik (born 1953, Cleveland, Ohio) is an American artist who paints American landscapes. Her realist yet dreamlike paintings and drawings embody oppositions and speak to America's historically conflicted relationship with nature. While she doesn't categorize herself as an environmental artist, she is a passionate supporter of environmental causes and has said, "I have no problem with people reading an ecological message into my work." Biography Gornik received in 1976 her B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (now called NSCAD University), and while attending the school she met her future husband, painter Eric Fischl. Art dealer Ed Thorp hosted her first solo exhibition in 1981, after having caught sight of her paintings while viewing Fischl's work. She is influenced by the feminist consciousness-raising of the late 20th century and, in speaking about female artists who have worked in the shadows of better known male artists, including Elaine de Kooning and Lee Krasner, she has said, "It's a problem. Women artists still receive lower prices for their art and remain less shown than their male counterparts." In 2014, FigureGround Press published the monograph April Gornik: Drawings, an extensive look at charcoal drawings done since the mid 1980s. The book includes essays by Steve Martin and Archie Rand, an interview with Lawrence Weschler, and a digital download of a piano and cello composition by composer Bruce Wolosoff, played by Wolosoff and Sara Sant'Ambrogio of the Eroica Trio. Gornik has remained committed to helping her community and making a difference, Gornik and her husband invested in 26 acres of land in which they donated in 2017 to the town of North Haven to preserve land. She also adds her funds to the Southampton Animal Shelter as well as being involved with the Eastville Historical Society. Collections Various permanent art collections include Gornik's work, including: Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Hood Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Nasher Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, and many others. Two of her paintings, Virga (1992) and Storm and Fires (1990) are held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection. In 2007, the Smithsonian Art Collectors Program commissioned Gornik to produce a print to benefit the educational and cultural programs of the Smithsonian Associates. Born in Lustdorf, near Odessa, Russia, to a British father and Russian mother. Traveled extensively with his family before studying architecture in St Petersburg, with further studies at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Atelier Redan, Paris. Practiced architecture in Moscow and was co-designer of the Metropole Hotel, in 1898. Moved to London in 1907 and was employed as an architectural perspectivist. After a sponsored visit to Rome and Venice he had a solo exhibit at the Fine Art Society, 1912, 'Watercolours of London and Venice'; followed by a further four shows. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers..., and Connell & Sons. His etchings were published in London by H C Dickens,1913-24, and a folio of his work 'Architectural watercolors and etchings of William Walcot' was published, in 1919. Elected RE, 1920; FRIBA, 1922; Associate British School at Rome. A foremost architectural draughtsman, he worked from studios in London, Oxford and Rome. Edition of 275 for the UK and 125 for the US. Signed in pencil. Ludgate Hill is a street that runs west from St. Paul's Churchyard to Ludgate Circus (built in 1864), and from there becomes Fleet Street. The Ludgate Hill railway station, between Water Lane and New Bridge Street, is a station of the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway. It was closed before World War II and the railway bridge and viaduct between Holborn Viaduct and Blackfriars stations was demolished in 1990 to enable the construction of the City Thameslink railway station in a tunnel. This also involved the regrading of the slope of Ludgate Hill at the junction. About halfway up Ludgate Hill is St Martin, Ludgate church. This was physically joined to the Ludgate.
