Sue Bartfield Art

American

Sue Bartfield is a contemporary painter who earned her BFA, MS and MFA in art from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Currently, she resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In Bartfield’s words, "You might be surprised to know that I do not consider me an abstract artist, nor do I consider my work abstract. Rather I am in love with painting, not just the intellectual process of creating images but even more so the physical act, the movement and sensations. It seems to me that something of this physicality and my obsessive relationship to it, has found its way into my work. That is to say that each painting is not only an expression of my interior but just as much an expression of the physical act of making it. My work begins as a story told in images and ends as only images, nothing but images, countless images, images intersecting and images piled atop one another. One of my favorite things is when people looking at my work discover shapes and images I had never imagined or intended. When they do, I never tell them that they are wrong, for they are not. They are simply discovering themselves in that in which I discovered myself."

Untitled #2 - Emmanuelle Messika, 21st Century, Abstract drawing
By Emmanuelle Messika
Located in Paris, FR
Coloured inks and pastel on paper Signed Gestural abstraction Outsider art Artist’s statement : "Painting, for me, is an expressive endeavor in which one depicts the evolution of the various facets of the artistic self. There is, on each canvas, a tension where violence and stillness naturally coexist. By playing with different materials, I seek to establish a sort of unexpected dialogue between these states, and aspire to express this tension through profusion of color. The canvas is the stage that allows me to unite narration with the action of painting the fantastic—even the outrageous---and the everyday. I develop scenarios borrowed from the imagination, which join fantasy, even fables, with the everyday. Pulling threads from each domain, I bring together the mythical and the quotidian, so that the worlds of reality and fantasy merge. I rely on “creatures,” improbable little characters that could exist in some other realm or dimension. They materialize, issuing forth from the surprising, unbelievable and wondrous world of childhood. Human or animal, both find themselves entangled in inextricable and melancholic situations. These inextricable situations create distance; the humor comes through this breach. It is the absurdity of their predicaments that manifests the humor in the work. In each of my paintings, the sentiments are heightened by an intentional, provocative tone that transforms the work. An Otherness is attributed to objects; objects become personified, and by their very presence, they become witnesses or guinea pigs torn between and bound to their dilemma. The titles of my paintings, whether invented or quotations taken out of context, come from literature, theater, or song lyrics. Accident and chance are often major actors in my work.” Emmanuelle Messika BIOGRAPHY : Emmanuelle Messika was born in France in 1979. She works and lives in Paris. Moody Blue - (24"x30", Grey and Blue, Minimal Abstract Painting)
By Andrea Stajan-Ferkul
Located in Mississauga, Ontario
Layers of paint build up this neutral palette where emphasis is placed on minimal composition. From a distance, the painting explores colour fields and geometric abstraction. Closer up, it's about subtle textures, intuitive mark-making, playful scribbles and remnants of colour. The blending of these two elements invites the viewer to experience a calm while stimulating, visual response. // Andrea Stajan-Ferkul is a Canadian artist whose work conveys a sense of experimentation through the use of paint, fabric collage and abstract mark-making. While not exclusive to fashion, dresses have been a compositional focus throughout her oeuvre. With an emphasis on timelessness, her series of dress paintings shift between realistic representation and interpretive impressions. In contrast, her series of abstract works embrace minimalism, considerate to a restrained palette and composition. Stajan-Ferkul began her career in fashion advertising before shifting her focus to fine art in 2000. Her work has been exhibited widely through galleries and art fairs, and hangs in private and public collections across Canada, US and Europe. A graduate of Sheridan College of Art and Design, Stajan-Ferkul's paintings can be found in numerous public and private collections, her work has been published in magazines and book covers, and prints are distributed internationally. In 2009, Stajan-Ferkul was invited to exhibit her work in Ottawa’s Rideau Hall, hosted by (then) Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean. keywords: abstract, minimal art...
