Large Chinese Early 20th Century Sang De Boeuf Vase on Rosewood Stand
About the Item
This large vase made in China during the first three decades of the 20th century is of a lovely deep Sang De Boeuf color. Ox Blood in the English language, this opaque deep red color was first developed to perfection in the reign of Kang Hsi during the 18th century and was used to great effect especially on monochromatic vases on the finest porcelains of the Emperial reigns that followed. European ceramicists could not produce a stable color to match it until the end of the 19th century. Simple in form but dramatically highlighted by the fine even glaze color this large vase rests on a fine old rosewood base and is further complemented by a very nice rosewood finial lid handle. Large vases like this were always prized objects for the rich as they were costly and difficult to produce.
