19th Century Empire Ormolu Mantel Clock, Fidelity
About the Item
Early 19th century Empire clock crafted of gilt bronze, or ormolu, featuring an allegorical scene with a woman sitting at her work table playing with her dog, symbol of loyalty. The group is set above a raised case containing the dial. On one side of the dial in relief is the woman’s lover holding the letter she wrote to him, and speaking to his dog. On the other side of the clock is an oil lamp and a basket of flowers. The clock rests on a plinth decorated with Mercury’s caduceus and two winged hats, above four toupie feet,
